Do Scottish fans really not support England?

HouseofHills · 12/07/2024 10:57

There’s always a running joke about Scottish fans wanting anyone but England to win and supporting which ever team England is playing against. I totally get the friendly rivalry but is it actually true that most Scottish fans want England to lose in the Euros final or do most want England to win deep down given Scotland is out?

If England aren’t playing I think most England fans would support Scotland or Wales as fellow Brits, especially in a Euro or World Cup final!

I've found this thread quite sad really and now I'm thinking that all the Scottish people I know secretly hate me 🤣 Oh well. COME ON ENGLAND!

Perhaps you should actually read the thread properly. That might really open your eyes and your mind.

Yep. Please do THIS 👆 - coz I'm getting dizzy going around in circles 🤪

SirChenjins · 13/07/2024 21:32

I know! It seems to be going like this:

Why doesn’t another country support our football team. You all hate us!

No, we don’t hate you - we are just frustrated with x, y and z

You all hate us!

No, we’ve already explained we don’t.

Yes you do, you big meanies!

Crinklycrisp · 13/07/2024 21:38

I'll leave you to your snarky Scottish love in and go and erect my England flag.

You’ve refused to listen to anyone.
You’ve refused to try understand anyone else’s perspective.
You believe you’re right.
All of this echos why a lot of people won’t support England.

Thevelvelletes · 13/07/2024 21:44

I don't dislike the England team.
But I do dislike the pundits non stop drivel even when England aren't playing they seem to be able to bring it back making comments about England...and 66 fuck me was 58years ago.

As if Scotland would ever stfu if they won the world cup.

StinkyWizzleteets · 13/07/2024 21:48

I have no opinions on the England team. They’ve been lucky to get where they are this tournament and I wish them well. I was far more vocal in support for the women’s team mostly because the whole environment around their matches and coverage was completely different.

Traditional sporting rivalries aside (and that isn’t Scotland/england specific) what makes me ABE is the incessant media coverage of England regardless of who is playing. It’s the England-centric marketing and advertising leading up to these events even although a potential three other UK teams may be Involved. It’s overwhelming and often inappropriate

It’s interviews and features on England players /managers/historic football events even when the match we’re watching has zero uk teams involved. This belief pushed upon us all that they are the best in the world when time and time again they’re proven not to be. It gets relentless and boring.

And then there’s 19-fucking-66 - almost 60 years ago and still the media and commentators harp on and on and on about it and we cannot face having to put up with that for another 60 fucking years.

For me it’s not about the team, they’re just doing their very well paid jobs and it’s not the sport. It’s about having months (and years) of a different country’s sporting events etc shoved down our throats and expecting an entire nation who for the most part will support their own country’s team expected to not only put up with the incessant England-team masturbation on tv, radio and in newspapers but it’s the expectation that we will automatically convert to England supporters in the face of the overwhelming coverage that quite frankly we are sick of. Are these demands made of other countries when their traditional rivals and next door neighbours have progressed in a sporting competition? It hasn’t been my experience elsewhere in Europe.

for the majority of us, it fuck all to do with English people. It has everything to do with perpetuating English exceptionalism and shoving that down our throats.

Good luck to the England team tomorrow but I am supporting Spain. A far better and more deserving team.

This and all this!

I’m certain if Scotland were in the final then there wouldn’t be as much press in England about it. It wouldn’t be shoved down your throats and I fully believe the majority of English fans would support the opposing team.

The Scots in my house - I live in Scotland - have been cheering on England.

it’s a comedy rivalry, not a real one

The Scots I know hate England and support anyone who plays them. It's so childish. Embarrassing actually.

Funny, because all the Scots I know- and that's a lot because I live in Scotland - are either rooting for England or not remotely interested in football.
I'm interested in football and will be supporting England.

Scotland wouldn’t have shut up about it, you’re right - 60 years on we’d still be talking about it.

The BBC would have shut up about it a long time ago.

And that’s the thread read for you.

Sounds about right! Mine has been cheering on the teams with his favourite players - so it’s been an eclectic mix!
