A MODERN-DAY PARABLE
Once upon a time, there were two young sisters, the taller sister was called Elizabeth and the shorter sister was named Selina. The girls had an Auntie, called Bessie. When Aunt Bessie spoke to Elizabeth, she always called her by her name, but when she spoke to Selina, quite often she would call Selina “Elizabeth” by mistake. Selina felt very sad when Aunt Bessie did this and it sometimes made Selina cry.
Now Selina was very fond of her sister Elizabeth, they had been through a lot together as sisters and Selina knew that it wasn’t Elizabeth’s fault that Aunt Bessie kept getting her name wrong, but it happened so often, and for so long, that Selina couldn’t help but start to feel a little resentment towards Elizabeth, because it was very obvious that Elizabeth was Aunt Bessie’s favourite.
One time, Aunt Bessie came to see Selina in her school play and Selina was thrilled; Elizabeth was there too. Aunt Bessie would also be going to see Elizabeth’s school play later that same week but, for now, Selina had Aunt Bessie’s full attention. At the interval, Selina ran excitedly to Aunt Bessie to talk about her play, but Aunt Bessie soon began talking to them both about Elizabeth's upcoming play instead.
Aunt Bessie even brought out some old photographs from a different play that Elizabeth had been in a very long time ago. This made Selina very sad because she couldn’t understand what these photographs, from an old play of Elizabeth’s, had to do with Selina’s play, which they were watching right now. Selina cried.
Through her tears, Selina shouted at Elizabeth “I hope you forget your lines when it’s time for your play”. Elizabeth felt that this was very mean of Selina, and she couldn’t understand why Selina would want her to fail, especially as Elizabeth had a big speech to make in her own play’s final scene: “you should want me to do well, because I’m very talented, and I’m much better than you at everything, and no one really cares about you anyway” said Elizabeth.
On the day of Elizabeth’s play, she did indeed fluff her lines in the final scene, as she always does. Elizabeth cried and cried and cried.
Selina smiled.
The End
Okay folks, I think I might have become trapped in this thread, please call for help!
(And I just know I’m gonna regret writing the last part of that parable as England will probably go on to win now). 😆😭
