Do Scottish fans really not support England?

There’s always a running joke about Scottish fans wanting anyone but England to win and supporting which ever team England is playing against. I totally get the friendly rivalry but is it actually true that most Scottish fans want England to lose in the Euros final or do most want England to win deep down given Scotland is out?

If England aren’t playing I think most England fans would support Scotland or Wales as fellow Brits, especially in a Euro or World Cup final!

I wonder how Scotland fans would feel if England fans spent so much time hoping Scotland would lose every match? I'm not sure it happens that way round. Most of the footie fans I know are happy when Scotland actually win.

So it's the medias fault then?

Scotland and England have been sporting rivals for centuries. The Scottish people on here have repeatedly said that they're sick of being treated as if they're English and should be interested in English football. Some Scottish people do not like the English, it's the way they've been brought up and will be over the moon should England lose tomorrow.

I'm not sure what's so difficult to understand.

nietzscheanvibe · 13/07/2024 14:18

Just a thought, but why is it that many English tennis fans would rather see 'anyone but Djokovic' winning Wimbledon? 😆 fucking hypocrites!

They boo when England score 😳

This - I've witnessed many times as English living in Scotland.

First time witnessed when England beat Germany 5/1. I've never supported Scotland since, I'll support Argentina/France/Germany first!

Who treats them as if they were English? The media? Or the England team?

The media who are very English centric.

Then your problem is the media, not the England squad.

It's more complex than just this particular tournament as it's been going on for a long time. The Euros is just an example of it.

It's obviously not the squad specifically.

Quite.

Honestly this thread has probably given the Scottish football team more attention than it deserves 😂

Your explanation makes no sense to me. Maybe write to Points Of View about the biased BBC. Is Points Of View still on the TV?

I think the fact that you can't see it really just confirms things from our end. 🤷‍♂️

What explanation makes no sense?

There are four home nations that make up the British Isles. Yet the British media eg the BBC is very English centric. It treats England as though it is more important than the other nations. People are fed up with it and the Euros are no different. England and Britain are often used synonymously.

I can understand you being pissed off with the media. Not with the actual England team though, which is what it sounds like to me if you want them to lose. Do you think England losing will change the way the BBC report on UK football teams?

We don't expect to make it out of the 1st round and take the piss out of ourselves to such an extent that even our ads do too (see linked iron-bru ad below) so we really wouldn't care

England losing will not change how the media continue to report.
Scottish people do not have to support England.
No one is pissed off with the England squad. Many like Southgate for example.
Scotland and England have been sporting rivals for a long time.

Wbeezer · 13/07/2024 15:03

It's football, do Man U fans support Man city if they're in the cup final?. The rivalry is part of the entertainment.

Fifthtimelucky · 13/07/2024 15:30

We were in Edinburgh last Saturday. Some of the group went to a pub to watch the football. They said that, other than them and one other group of English people, everyone else there was cheering for the Netherlands.

I am not particularly interested in football myself but would always support Scotland, Wales or N Ireland over any other country (other than England)!

Again, missing the point completely.

Really? Which point am I missing - from the OP, "There’s always a running joke about Scottish fans wanting anyone but England to win and supporting which ever team England is playing against." i.e. exactly what I am addressing.

HollyKnight · 13/07/2024 16:01

It's not about football 🤦🏻‍♀️

Football is just one of the times when English people actually notice that the rest of the UK has a problem with how England-centric the UK is.

If I’m in England on my English sofa watching English tv and a Scottish commentator talking about Scotland talks about “we” and “us” that wouldn’t bother me one jot - I want to hear from a Scottish person talking about their team.

I would also be supporting Scotland if they were playing anyone except a home nations team.

Some Scots seem to have a massive inferiority complex. self confident people just don’t behave like that.

Why do you think that is?

Scotland fans don't constantly wonder why English folk aren't supporting them.

This thread is about the English team. 🫣

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 13/07/2024 17:55

most Scots won’t support England though. I think a big part of it is the fact that we will never hear the end of it, if they do win.

I think that if Scotland won the euros, there would be just as much banging on about it.
