Do Scottish fans really not support England?

HouseofHills · 12/07/2024 10:57

There’s always a running joke about Scottish fans wanting anyone but England to win and supporting which ever team England is playing against. I totally get the friendly rivalry but is it actually true that most Scottish fans want England to lose in the Euros final or do most want England to win deep down given Scotland is out?

If England aren’t playing I think most England fans would support Scotland or Wales as fellow Brits, especially in a Euro or World Cup final!

Tonight is an example of media bias. STV are currently showing the lionesses game. We don’t get the Scottish women’s games on TV yet we’ve now got 3 hours or so of the England Women’s team here in Scotland. Where is Coronation Street or, to be fair just about anything else.

Scotland Ladies game was on too, as huuby watched it, might have been BBC Alba.

Seriously nobody cares. Bloody fed up of people banging on about the "wicked englsih"
If you hate us that much have a referendum to break away.
We don't care

Tell me you're missing the point......

Suenami · 13/07/2024 08:23

Both the Scottish and English women's game are on iplayer.

The Scottish game was on Alba. The English game wasn't.

Talk about a fuss over nothing

Talk about missing the whole point of the thread......

I don't get the wide eyed incredulity about us not supporting you. We are literally your chippy wee brother who's fed up of hearing how good you are at everything whilst we never quite make it.

But mainly it's the press and commentators arrogance as I quite happily support the England netball team and the Lionesses, just not your football or rugby teams.

No, I was responding to the posts about only the English women's game being shown, which was incorrect.

Maybe I'm missing what YOU have decided, in your own head, what the point is.

MY point was in answer to the person who posted complaining that the Scottish women's match wasn't shown. It was.

Pinkstanley · 13/07/2024 09:21

Ok, I may have missed the Scottish game being on but if it was on Alba, it was hardly on the BBC or ITV at prime viewing times for all of the UK to watch was it? It is media bias. Always has been and always will be. To be fair here though, even if it was on, I’d still not watch. Similarly, we often see TV schedules being shuffled around for other games involving English premier league clubs. This won’t be the same for Scottish Fixtures or, any other fixtures from Wales or NI.

I’m Scottish but some of my closest friends are English and huge football supporters. For me, I would love to see the reaction from them if England do win. There’s nothing better than watching people you love find joy in something. So for that reason I do hope the male lionesses win!

Im more of a rugby fan, and being Scottish I’m used to things not always going well but it’s part and parcel of being a Scottish team sports fan. However, when we do beat England at rugby, I have to say the English fans do show some unpleasant behaviour!

Crinklycrisp · 13/07/2024 09:54

I'm English, not a massive football fan but I'm always happy when Scotland or England do well. If Scotland had got to the final I would be cheering them on and I'm sure most English football fans would be too.

This 👆

I was watching BREAKFAST on BBC earlier (you can see it on BBC iPlayer, 8:32am, please check it out if you REALLY want to understand where we're coming from), and Naga Munchetty starts to introduce a piece about the England football team by saying "we are building up..."; she then catches herself (coz she remembers she's actually talking to the entire UK) and corrects it to "or England fans are building up to that game..."

This might seem trivial but it's fucking relentless: an England-centric bias on virtually every bulletin and on every live match, forced down our throats (even those matches not involving England and, as a PP mentioned, even during the Germany v SCOTLAND game, for fucks sake).

The BBC (and other UK-wide broadcasters) talks to us as if we are English, and THAT'S what fucks us off. WE are not English!

Collexifon · 13/07/2024 12:07

So it was on, readily available on iplayer and also live to anyone who has more than four terrestrial channels (I have basic free view and have Alba). But you wouldn't have watched it anyway.

OK.

Some people just like to have a way to express their anger I guess.

And that's the England teams fault, because?

DuesToTheDirt · 13/07/2024 12:25

Yes, lots of Scottish people support "anyone who's playing against England". I find it annoying and petty (I'm English, live in Scotland and don't give a damn about football). Perhaps the attitude is reinforced by jealousy, what with Scotland being shite at football and nearly always going out early. I wouldn't expect Scottish people to support England, but it's the business of supporting their opponents that I find ridiculous.

I guess it's the small-nation-next-to-bigger-nation mentality.

RJnomore1 · 13/07/2024 12:27

It wasn’t on alba it was on bbc Scotland. Two different channels. Alba is in Gaelic mostly.

The England women’s game was on itv not bbc was it not? I can’t remember now but I was watching bbc one at 8pm and it wasn’t the women’s game.

Years ago when you had all the regional
tv companies perhaps it wouldn’t have been on in Scotland who knows. Perhaps if bbc had it it would have been on the local bbc one English channels and not bbc one Scotland, Ireland, wales. They do have different schedules (we get river city 😂)

circular2478 · 13/07/2024 13:24

I'm Irish but with an English dh and half English dc. Prior to meeting him I would never have supported England (but I was never loutish about it). None of my Irish family or friends will be supporting England, even those that live in England. Ordinarily I would have supported Spain as we lived there and have family living there, but I have and will support England, in support of my dh and dc. It would be very petty of me not to. I genuinely want them to do well as I want my dh and dc to be happy. We've been invited to watch it with several of my family/ friends but I wouldn't put my dh through the blatant anyone but England mentality, especially my dc. I just hope it's a good game of football.

Well... you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it... think! 😉

I didn't say it was the England team's fault. I think Gareth Southgate is a likeable guy and I'm happy to listen to him speak about his team - if the media commentators were as measured as he is, we wouldn't be having this debate (that's my opinion, can't speak for everyone). Hell, I even felt sorry for the England players in their earlier games because their OWN fckn fans couldn't support them properly (why would SCOTTISH fans get behind an ENGLISH team when their OWN FANS can't?).

Anyway, back to the main point, which everyone keeps missing: surely you can understand why this media bias makes us feel ignored by "national" (UK-wide) broadcasters who, when presenting to a UK audience (this is not about regional variations, they are presenting to us all in these programmes) always equate "WE" with "ENGLAND" and that this (relentlessly, over my entire 60+ years), might build a level of resentment which makes it impossible for some of US to get behind YOUR team?

And football is only ONE aspect that this bias permeates but that's a whole other discussion.

There are very few Scottish football fans who will be hoping England win tonight. The vast majority will be hoping they get absolutely humped.

Same with Irish football fans.
