Do Scottish fans really not support England?

HouseofHills · 12/07/2024 10:57

There’s always a running joke about Scottish fans wanting anyone but England to win and supporting which ever team England is playing against. I totally get the friendly rivalry but is it actually true that most Scottish fans want England to lose in the Euros final or do most want England to win deep down given Scotland is out?

If England aren’t playing I think most England fans would support Scotland or Wales as fellow Brits, especially in a Euro or World Cup final!

Honestly I blame the commentators it didn't matter who was playing during the Euros England was mentioned in every game. I think 17.00 minutes in was the record. Let the teams playing have their moment.

I've got Spain in the sweep so £50 win would be sweet 😂 I

Yes, of course. I was just pointing out that one comes from love of the game or the team and the other comes from hatred, and I want no part of that.

It's not that black and white.

Maybe you went to a Portugal supporting pub? As everyone I know was supporting Scotland in their match against Germany.

What on earth is a "Portugal supporting pub?" It was a standard wetherspoons or similar, the majority of the people there were English from their accents. There weren't specific Portugal flags or anything around there.

I think the chance we randomly walked into, out of all the pubs in london, one with a clientele composed primarily of Portuguese ex pats who didn't sound , speak, or appear to be Portuguese vs we walked into a pub in England where the clientele were English and England supporters annoyed that their team had been knocked out much earlier than a traditionally "worse" team, the second is slightly more likely.

Fannyfiggs · 12/07/2024 16:20

I was right behind the Lionesses 🏆

Not so keen on the male lionesses team.

WorriedMama12 · 12/07/2024 16:24

I'm Scottish. It wouldn't put me up nor down if they won or lost. I didn't really care about Scotland getting knocked out though, that's my level of interest in the tournament.

I have heard the 'anyone but England' thing a lot, there are people who would grudge England winning however a lot of it is said as banter.

I think it's an outward thing. Jokingly I want Spain to win, but would be pleased for England if they won. As the poster above says, there is no malice in it for the vast majority of Scots. It's just a historical rivalry which will always be there.

The ‘historical rivalry’ thing is quite funny though.

It’s like having ‘rivals’ where one party is obsessed with the rivalry and shouts it loud and proud at any and every opportunity.

Whilst the other side keeps forgetting.
‘Oh Hi there, err, I’m so sorry I’m terrible with names, anyway how’s things?
Eh? Sorry what…?
Oh of course… yeah rivals… sure… sorry I totally forgot about that…
Anyways….. you err have a good day though’.

And then forgetting this close encounter immediately. 😂😂

SirChenjins · 12/07/2024 16:34

Or they go and start a thread on MN about it and many posters join in to express their amazement that their rivals don't support them and claim everyone in that rival country hates them so much they're afraid to cross the border.

You've summed that up quite well. 😬

Scottish athlete representing GB wins anything they're called British same for the Welsh and Irish yet when it's an English athlete they're always called English, it's the double standards

As far as I am aware it is all ‘Team GB’ in the Olympics. I never hear it mentioned that an athlete is ‘English’ and not British when it comes to Team GB. It’s football, rugby, cricket, etc, where they talk about English/Welsh/Scottish,Northern Irish.

You must watch with the sound turned down. When Andy Murray lost any game he was Scottish minute he won a medal he was British. Happens all the time.

The fact you had to dig out a clip from 15 years ago to find an example of this isn’t really supporting your point

On the contrary, it supports the point perfectly BECAUSE it's 15 years old, and it's been going on for very much longer than that.

OvO · 12/07/2024 19:18

I don’t want England to win and it’s solely because of the fucking annoying media. Does ma heid in.

Will always cheer the English women’s team though! I don’t hate the English at all, in every other aspect I hope you all do well and have happy lives.

Why though?

For many reasons. Lack of interest in general, because of the fans and how they behave, because I’m Scottish, because I don’t need it shoved in my face for the next century. The list goes on

You what? I didn't dig it out, it's just a particularly quick and funny example of what the media in Scotland feels like. Everytime I hear English moaning that they're not hearing enough cheering from across Hadrian's wall I think of it. Which is pretty much every time England get anywhere close to a football achievement.

It's definitely not the only example though. Just try listening to the next coverage, remembering that we get the same in Scotland, and see if it lands any different.

I also find your question disingenuous. You've posed it as a genuine "do the Scottish support England, why not?" Question. That clip is exemplary of why.

FitAt50 · 12/07/2024 20:16

I am Scottish and will support England in every sport ACCEPT football. All we hear every time there is a major tournament on is "Its coming home". Then forced to watch endless footage of fat men drinking and singing it in the streets. I much prefer the Scottish system of just accepting we are not very good at football and just being happy to be there in the first place.

I live in the North East of England, and have been to many a Celtic / Rangers game.

There's plenty of 'fat men' drinking in the streets there, too. As a Newcastle fan, I was also made to feel unwelcome.

So far, English people on this thread have been repeatedly called Humourless, Arrogant and Entitled.

I'm half Welsh and half English. I have Scottish family, too. I support all our home nations when they play. It's difficult when Wales play England, so I just have to hope for a draw. I honestly feel there is genuine vitriol towards the English. I'm sick of feeling crap about our history. I'm not a bad person, but I'm made to feel like one because of my heritage.

P.S. I totally understand the "Och Aye the noo" shit from people who think they are funny. They aren't. I constantly either get "Wey Aye Man" or "Oh, you're a sheep shagger" it's tiresome.

We have more in common than that which divides us.

Teacherprebaby · 12/07/2024 20:36

No other country supports England, not Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland...they never have.

OK. Thanks. At least we now know where we stand.

Pinkstanley · 12/07/2024 21:20

Tonight is an example of media bias. STV are currently showing the lionesses game. We don’t get the Scottish women’s games on TV yet we’ve now got 3 hours or so of the England Women’s team here in Scotland. Where is Coronation Street or, to be fair just about anything else.

Speak for yourself. You’re not speaking for our house of Scots in Scotland. We will be supporting England on Sunday.

To be fair the Scotland women’s game was on bbc Scotland earlier… but point well made.

So, why not have the England women's game on BBC England? Oh, wait...

That's virtually the entire point, that the main "BBC" channel IS "BBC England" 🤷‍♂️

They're not subjected to our biased commentators but we have to stomach theirs - whilst being told we're pathetic miserable bastards for not supporting them because we're utterly scunnered at being broadcast to by the BRITISH Broadcasting Association as if we wrre English.

We already had one remember? And nobody on here has said that English people are wicked, don't be daft.
