Starting a thread as it is only weeks away.

The Welsh cyclist who I saw win a medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and the raising of the Welsh flag will be there- Emma Finucaine, one of the fastest women in the world on a cycle.

Harvard of course.

I'm sad about the wanker or wonder thread.

I don't think drive or self belief is anything to be ashamed of.

Same. Horrible to see that stuff

Me too

Awful

EasternStandard · 06/08/2024 22:27

The amount athletes’ talent gives us is huge and Josh Kerr’s race was particularly good

I was shouting and jumping, that’s down to his striving and dedication so he can be confident imo

GrouchyKiwi · 06/08/2024 22:40

Yes, I think there's a big difference between having self-confidence and talking down your opponents.

Fizbosshoes · 06/08/2024 22:44

The rivalry made it much more of a must-see race imo (as well as a decent chance of a GB medal)
I thought it was a great race and he came across well in the interview afterwards.

The first few women skateboarders were so weak and boring, but it finally got better with some of the later participants.

Oblomov24 · 06/08/2024 23:02

I disliked that thread too. I've seen a lot about him and how Ingerbrigtsen started it.

I thought the gold medal run by the Australian - two months after turning 14 was amazing - completely fearless and with a fair bit of grinning going on

I saw that, NOBODY who understands the way rivalry works would ever think that. I have that opinion about one person in sport who is a racing driver but apart from that the majority of this is rivalry banter! TBH (and im
a little too young to fully get it, or even want to do proper research) but the Coe/Ovett (sp?) business sounds much worse.

ASaltyWoman · 07/08/2024 10:52

I thought the women's - girls', really! - skateboarding had a refreshingly positive and unselfconscious atmosphere; just young girls in baggy clothes, enjoying themselves and being supportive of each other. It also made me wonder how they practise those incredible moves - do they have crash mats? Or are they just padded up, going for it, and potentially landing on concrete if they get it wrong?

Sulusu · 07/08/2024 11:02

Not sure Ingebritsen is thrilled about the scheduling as he has a 5k heat this morning after the 1.5 final last night. He is through though after an eventful heat where Miller from GB tangled with a French runner and fell. No idea who was at fault but they had words after the finish line.

Also at one point a cameraman was on the track! What on earth was he thinking doing that in the middle of a 5k 😮

Izzynohopanda · 07/08/2024 11:44

Nice to see a new crop of young runners coming through.

Miller, not surprisingly, wasn’t very happy.

Izzynohopanda · 07/08/2024 11:57

Just noticed on the Speed Bouldering Knock out chart, they called the final “ The Big Final”. Sounds like a primary school!

ASaltyWoman · 07/08/2024 12:04

I never think of myself as being particularly interested in sport but there's something about the Olympic fortnight coverage that completely draws me in and suddenly I'm watching bouldering at lunchtime on a Wednesday. I'm really going to miss it next week!

murasaki · 07/08/2024 12:17

It's Mills, not Miller. He's ex footballer Danny Mills's son. His dad was partial to a red card, so Mills Jr's ability to get in a ruck was no surprise to me...

Izzynohopanda · 07/08/2024 12:17

@ASaltyWoman I get drawn in as well.

what about the para-Olympics? I’m sure we’ll get equally as drawn into those sports as well.

murasaki · 07/08/2024 12:20

I love the paras. Wheelchair rugby is brutal.

Edited

He has been re-instated into the final

LightFull · 07/08/2024 16:21

Laura Kenny neé Trott has a very annoying voice

It's like nails on a blackboard for me.

LightFull · 07/08/2024 16:24

I'm pleased for Mills he's in the final

Not sure what went in there as hard to see

Paula Radcliffe was saying yesterday after a similar tussle where a female runner was disqualified that you're allowed to touch a runner to indicate you're behind them so they can move over a bit or just that your there to avoid colliding. Paula said this was completely normal

What's not normal is whacking that person back or instead of tapping them gently actually shoving them.

Close battle in the velodrome for gold, but Aus got it after one of GBs riders slipped on the last lap.

Think it was Ethan Hater who slipped off his saddle, he looked pretty devastated 🙁

Fizbosshoes · 07/08/2024 18:03

We watched a "round up" of various sports last night and there was some sort of wrestling on.
I have to say it's probably one of the least entertaining sports I've come across so far. It seemed (to the untrained eye) like 2 slightly overweight men in leotards pushing each other....but I imagine it is slightly more complex. I'm not sure I want to watch any more of it to find out the rules or complexities!
