Starting a thread as it is only weeks away.

The Welsh cyclist who I saw win a medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and the raising of the Welsh flag will be there- Emma Finucaine, one of the fastest women in the world on a cycle.

I'm sure when I watched gymnastics in the 90s, a lot of the girls were about 12, they certainly looked very young.

Phoebe Gill was the youngest member of the athletics team, at 17, and even then I thought that's a lot to deal with - the cameras, interviews and media attention (on top of performing world level sport) at that age.... but can't imagine it at 11 or 12....

Izzynohopanda · 06/08/2024 14:04

I’ve just looked it up. There’s no minimum age, and it depends on the international governing body.

I’m sure they increased the gymnastics minimum age a few years ago as it was too much for young bodies .

i think it should be sixteen or eighteen.

Just hooked into the giving to see the leader’s straight 10s dive incredible

Sulusu · 06/08/2024 16:05

Been a quiet day for sailing again as lack of wind in Marseille causing the organisers a headache.

Last time Sky Brown was 13. She's positively ancient now at 16!

BestIsWest · 06/08/2024 17:21

I agree there should be a lower age limit.

EasternStandard · 06/08/2024 18:29

Ah Keely getting the gold medal

I’m feeling the emotion of that medal ceremony and anthem too

Supergirl1958 · 06/08/2024 18:29

Anyone else crying during that medal ceremony, or was it just me 😭

EasternStandard · 06/08/2024 18:29

Ha @Supergirl1958 I did

Supergirl1958 · 06/08/2024 18:32

@EasternStandard I literally live about 10 minutes down the road from here, literally a straight dual carriageway! Some of my closest friends went to her high school, and she’s a red! 🥰

She’s amazing

I didn’t realise only 10 women had won a gold athletics medal

Supergirl1958 · 06/08/2024 18:34

Aww I actually feel for Paula! All that potential and never won a medal in the Olympics :(

Supergirl1958 · 06/08/2024 18:34

I know it’s frightening

WrittenOnWater · 06/08/2024 18:35

I cried!

Marshtit · 06/08/2024 19:19

the dutch won, we didnt do badly with the silver!

EasternStandard · 06/08/2024 19:55

Omg that was brutal

GrouchyKiwi · 06/08/2024 19:56

That 1500m race was fascinating!

Well done to the American. Amazing silver for Josh Kerr!

GrouchyKiwi · 06/08/2024 19:58

Can't say I feel sorry for Ingebrigtsen not getting a medal. He seems like a bit of a prat.

burblish · 06/08/2024 19:59

Good lord, who would have predicted Cole Hocker would win the 1500m, another American would also medal, and Ingebrigtsen would get nothing?!

@GrouchyKiwi Agreed - I find Ingebrigtsen very unlikeable. He is unnecessarily disrespectful to his competitors (Josh Kerr has commented that Ingebrigtsen needs to find his manners!). He has had a rough time with his father, who used to be his coach (he and his two brothers, who are also athletes, have disclosed how abusive their father was to them when he trained them), but he acts like such a cock.

burblish · 06/08/2024 20:07

Having said that, fair play to Ingebrigtsen for the interview he did just now with the BBC - he notably didn't congratulate the others but seemed to be taking the defeat on the chin.

GrouchyKiwi · 06/08/2024 20:09

It's sad how many abusive fathers there are in sport. Sad

Camryn Rogers of Canada just threw her hammer 76m. That's mad.

Fizbosshoes · 06/08/2024 20:14

That was an epic race! So exciting, I said at the start, maybe neither JK or JI will win ....although I obviously wanted Josh Kerr to win.
I wasn't expecting Ingebrigtsen not to get a medal at all though!

GrouchyKiwi · 06/08/2024 20:17

Am watching the steeplechase with DDs. That's a Nope race if ever there was one.

Marshtit · 06/08/2024 20:53

the steeplechase looked exhausting
well done to lizzie bird

the 200 metre also fantastic, well done to the two british girls, so pleased that they have enjoyed themselves and are proud of their efforts

Holluschickie · 06/08/2024 20:59

Sad Darryl Neita didn't make it to the medals. But omg Gabby Thomas is amazing. Harford grad and gold medallist! Also v impressed by Julian Alfred.
