Starting a thread as it is only weeks away.

The Welsh cyclist who I saw win a medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and the raising of the Welsh flag will be there- Emma Finucaine, one of the fastest women in the world on a cycle.

Evening all! Just got back from Wembley!! Not the result we wanted!

Was a great evening listening to the coverage on 5live this evening! Two great medals in the 4x400 relays. A great individual bronze in the 1500m.

Great silver in the artistic swimming and a shame Caden missed out on the gold in the taekwondo and Rebecca the bronze!

Too tired to watch today at the games!!

That’s weird that in some sports you can train abroad. I know at least a couple of the Lionesses (football) went to American colleges and now play for top British teams.

So if you train abroad, you can’t represent Britain, but just train for the sake of training? But enter competitions under your own name, but you loose your chance of representing the GB? Or just for the Olympics?

Most who train abroad go to the US on a scholarship. Free degree and elite level training that fits in with uni. Something you just can’t do in the UK.

they compete NCAA- for their university.

GB- you will be dropped from any GB squad you are on, and no longer be eligible for the world class program. So no funding, or support of any kind. You won’t be on their radar.

those training in the UK and nominated for WCP will be selected over anyone training abroad. It’s very tough to be outside that squad as selections are often from training camps or trials. Theoretically you can compete in British champs and be selected for the big comps like euros/commomwealths/worlds/olympics, but for example in diving our 4 synchro teams were announced before the Olympic trial event. Tom Daley did not compete in the Olympic trials. Selection policies state they are discretionary, not results based.

@Changedmynameagain84 it’s really interesting reading that as yet again it comes down to can your parents fund you training if you want to compete for GB or go to USA to get an education and carry on training. Bonkers. My dd has never even considered going to USA to study we wouldn’t know where to start looking tbh. She’s just the kid who was naturally very sporty very coachable and didn’t start her current sport until 3yrs ago but won the regional within 2yrs of starting and now competing nationally. So she’s got talent & she wants to find a way to do Uni and sport so maybe we need to explore other options. She also went to an awful comprehensive school so no leg up from private schooling either.

Izzynohopanda · 11/08/2024 07:49

@WheresSummer99 Msybe look at the bios, Wikipedia , Facebook pages of the top athletes in the chosen sport to see where they train etc.

AndNobbyDancing · 11/08/2024 09:21

Watching the marathon, so hard when there are four in the front pack.

AndNobbyDancing · 11/08/2024 09:23

@Changedmynameagain84 that's interesting, I guess it is difficult across different sports.

The one I'm involved in (developing sport) has been transformed by lottery funding and helps all athletes.

AndNobbyDancing · 11/08/2024 09:25

Wow Hassan in the marathon. What a Athlete.

AndNobbyDancing · 11/08/2024 09:35

I love seeing marathon runners come in.

They way they celebrate regardless of the position, the way the crowd cheers, just wonderful.

Marshtit · 11/08/2024 09:38

modern pentathlon today

ArdMhaca · 11/08/2024 09:41

That was amazing to watch. Wonder if there has been a top down message to all athletes to name check the National Lottery ? I don’t recall winners ever publicly thanking them before as consistently as these games.

Wow Hassan in the marathon. What a Athlete.

As I've just posted elsewhere, not just Gold in the Marathon, but Bronze in 5000m and 10000m too, all this week! She is a superwoman.

US gymnast Jordan Chiles has been stripped of her bronze in the women's floor exercise and Romania's Ana Barbosu has been reinstated in bronze position. Jordan originally scored below Ana but put in an inquiry which resulted in the difficulty level for her routine being upgraded, so her score then went above Ana's. The Romanian team appealed this to the Court of Arbitration for Sport who found Jordan's inquiry was made after the one minute deadline for doing so, and therefore should not have been considered. Feels harsh for Jordan as the judges were the ones who made a mistake on scoring her routine, but I can understand the Romanian position, too.

Arconialiving · 11/08/2024 10:36

Gutted for Jordan as she deserved that bronze medal.

@ArdMhaca they always name check the lottery as for a few weeks after the Olympics I do actually play! Funnily enough I didn't think as many athletes had name checked the lottery as usual as it's only been this 2nd week that I've thought to buy tickets!

Sulusu · 11/08/2024 10:51

Watching the velodrome, DJ is playing Sweet Caroline, and the crowd of all nationalities are singing along. It's a nice moment 😊

Only problem is I will have that stuck in my head now.

burblish · 11/08/2024 10:52

Watching the keirin - wow, Laura Kenny has allowed Chris Hoy to get a word in edgeways for once! (Only after she had her say first, of course.) Yes, Laura, you are the most successful female British cyclist ever, but not at keirin - that particular race was one of Chris Hoy's specialities (keirin gold in both 2008 and 2012), so maybe let him take the lead on this one? [End rant!]

WheresSummer99 · 11/08/2024 11:11

Gosh that’s harsh in the women’s floor especially if it’s a judging error surely they both should get a bronze medal. Weve had similar at a National competition once it went my dds favour and once it didn’t but it does pee me off that internal politics gets in the way far too often in sport.

Sulusu · 11/08/2024 11:19

Emily Campbell, love her hair! I hope she can medal, but the Chinese weightlifters are incredibly good.

burblish · 11/08/2024 11:27

@Sulusu I agree, Emily Campbell is all kinds of fabulous! She seems to be in great form, too.

Arconialiving · 11/08/2024 12:38

Emily Campbell is amazing! I'd love her to do Strictly! (But I said that after Tokyo too and it didn't happen!)

Mad crash for Jack Carlin!

I hope Jack is ok that crash was nasty.

Quick thinking from the Malaysian rider to crawl across the line with his bike for fourth!

Arconialiving · 11/08/2024 12:49

They've said he is ok, although I imagine he's feeling very sore (& absolutely gutted)!

Sulusu · 11/08/2024 12:54

Fantastic bronze for Emily!

I've noticed them mentioning the lottery in previous events, it always feels to me like something they've been told to add as it's nearly always an afterthought last....not unreasonably as must be so many thoughts and emotions after getting an Olympic medal!
