Starting a thread as it is only weeks away.

The Welsh cyclist who I saw win a medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and the raising of the Welsh flag will be there- Emma Finucaine, one of the fastest women in the world on a cycle.

Had such a lovely day today. Watching the Olympics all day is such a wonderful privilege

GrouchyKiwi · 10/08/2024 19:58

Noooo. This is too stressful. I'm happy with a silver.

Come on, Hamish!

bizzey · 10/08/2024 19:59

Kerr Def wanted to share ...he purposely fluked that other jump.

Halfblindbunny · 10/08/2024 19:59

I think Aquatics GB are missing a trick as well because the American College system is brilliant for swimmers but persumably with that rule you have to stay here if you want to make Team GB for swimming. A difficult choice for a lot of 18 year old swimmers.

Also if Peaty follows Mel Marshall to Australia that rules him out although I suppose he might be one of the exceptions.

bizzey · 10/08/2024 19:59

Noooo where has it gone ! 😠.

AndNobbyDancing · 10/08/2024 19:59

Wrt training in the UK. I do broadly agree with this, funding is usually through the lottery and keeping the training in the UK helps to secure the next generation.

@Changedmynameagain84 yes it's weird isn't it the diving thing

Is it the same for cycling ?🚴

I don’t know any cyclists either so no knowledge of their system.

agree with pp that control is a big part of it. Both coaches and divers are dependent on the funding.

there was a good documentary a while ago where Andy banks- Tom Daley’s coach, says in hindsight he pushed to hard and too early because he was worried about the funding. Andy’s now coaching in Australia.

Need to move to discovery, BBC move for GB athletes.

Whilst it maybe brutal, for a small country we have excellent funding and amazing results.

bizzey · 10/08/2024 20:06

I noticed there was a of Lottery thanks in lots of the interviews hi evening.

AndNobbyDancing · 10/08/2024 20:06

British record in the 4x400 . Amazing

GrouchyKiwi · 10/08/2024 20:06

YES!

Moses. That was madly tense.

Great work, Hamish. Well done, Shelby! What a final.

I'm sure I'm being thick here but if a diver goes to America and is trained by the coaches at the University then isnt that better as it saves Team GB money? I.e.someome.else does the training and provides the facilities and we just benefit from it?

bizzey · 10/08/2024 20:08

Ohhh so pleased for Kerr !

Actually I think I disagree. WRT aquatics sports which is my area anyway.

grass roots is generally council or privately funded. There may be some grants, but lottery funding is not usually a consideration at club level.

high performance centres are lottery funded. That means the coach and athletes are paid for by the NGB. In some cases the council or entity receives no part of this, in fact may donate pool time free to the HPC athletes.

hpc’s create an entity separate from club athletes. They train separately, compete separately, and paths don’t cross. So your average club athlete will not benefit from lottery funding or even training at the same facility.

so it makes bugger all difference where a funded athlete trains as only they benefit.

Izzy Thorpe and Kate Shortman have won Silver in the artistic swimming , the first medal for Team GB in artistic swimming !
With all the attention on the athletics this evening , not sure the BBC have even mentioned it !

bizzey · 10/08/2024 20:40

Jane ..he was cute 🥰! He was happy to share the gold ...now he has got it ALL to himself ! 🤣

Oblomov24 · 10/08/2024 20:48

Me too. I said I didn't think the other guy would want to share...and it looks like he didn't.. but he looked more pumped up for it than Kerr.

ASaltyWoman · 10/08/2024 21:47

Izzy and Kate, the artistic swimming duo, are on now and they are everything.

WheresSummer99 · 10/08/2024 21:51

The artistic swimming was on the red button earlier it was insane and so pleased for the British pair brilliant result - can’t believe both their mums were a pair too.
