Starting a thread as it is only weeks away.

The Welsh cyclist who I saw win a medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and the raising of the Welsh flag will be there- Emma Finucaine, one of the fastest women in the world on a cycle.

Haven’t heard much about the Norwegians in these Olympics (unlike the Winter Olympics).

how did Rhys McClenaghan decide to run for Ireland, and how was the GB 100 metre Great Britain and Northern Ireland?

The Great Britain team is always Great Britain and Northern Ireland but they rarely say the whole thing because its so long. If you are from Northern Ireland you can choose to represent them as part or Team GB or represent Ireland.

Arconialiving · 03/08/2024 20:55

@Marshtit Rhys is from Northern Ireland so fully entitled to compete for either GB & NI or Ireland. It's his choice and he chose Ireland (same as Rory McIroy and Daniel Wiffen).

Supergirl1958 · 03/08/2024 21:00

@Marshtit i felt sorry for Max, he did so well today it just wasn’t meant to be. His tears during his interview were also heartbreaking.

Andy is at the swimming but has been on a whistle stop tour as a spectator today!

Marshtit · 03/08/2024 21:01

thank you @Arconialiving

Katie Ledecky - chapeau! Fourteen Olympic medals so far, including winning the 800m freestyle four times in a row.

I feel like a bit of a broken record with how amazing I find so many of these Olympic athletes! So many of them also come across as being such humble, gracious people, too.

I concur they are incredible

I’m loving this maybe more than previous Olympics for some reason, I think I’ve just watched more

@burblish

HISTORY MAKER! 🔥🏊

Katie Ledecky just won the gold in the women's 800m freestyle at #Paris2024, and she's not stopping there! 🥇 She now ties with Larisa Latynina for the MOST Olympic gold medals by a female athlete in ANY sport!

Marshtit · 03/08/2024 21:36

norway won the Decathlon.

i always worry watching the polevault in case the fall on the pole

Marshtit · 03/08/2024 21:37

Bronze in the team dressage
which now makes me feel uncomfortable sadly to watch

There was an interesting one where a man knocked the bar with his…ahem…area!!

Holluschickie · 03/08/2024 22:51

So thrilled Julien Alfred won. Fabulous race. Always love when tiny nations win over the US hype machine. Very denuded field though. Puzzled over Shelly Ann's withdrawal?

I will be cheering for Jamaica in the 200 m now.

I've always thought the name is a bit unfair on NI...because it always tends to get left out!
PP didn't seem to realise NI was even part of the team for example.

Does anyone know why they don't use the name Team UK instead?

An old article showing from 2016: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-37058920

Andy Murray serving as flag bearer for Team GB

Who, What, Why: Why is it Team GB, not Team UK?

Who was this athlete whose record has taken two millennia to beat?

Pirateshipmethinks · 04/08/2024 01:29

Thank you very much @CrossPurposes.

Sounds like Team UK would be more representative, even if not fully representative.

AndNobbyDancing · 04/08/2024 07:02

One of the presenters yesterday kept saying the full name GB & NI. Only time I've heard it be used in full.

yes same here, it was the mixed relay sprint, and they had GBR on their back

I'm enjoying the fact the athletes are clearly allowed to wear what they feel comfortable in now. One of the Swiss athletes has leggings and a crop top and the other bikini bottoms and a t shirt.

Supergirl1958 · 04/08/2024 09:01

@Halfblindbunny think they get given the whole kit from what I can see on those paging dr instagram videos! I’ve seen about 50 of them this weekend all containing various athletes! From various countries!

Yes they all get loads of kit options for general wear but beach volleyball used to have very specific rule on what you could wear while competing which basically consisted of bikinis for women and short shorts for men. This has changed recently to allow then more options so they feel comfortable. Much like gymnastics seems to be moving away from the very high cut leotards.

EtonMessy · 04/08/2024 09:22

The fencing at the Grand Palais last night looked amazing, the atmosphere during the France and Japan Sabre Team bronze medal match was incredible especially when the spectators starting singing La Marseillaise ! 🤺🇫🇷

Wasn’t it the Norwegian team got disqualified for wearing shorts instead of the teeny tiny pants? Got the rules changed.

ETA it was handball and a fine, although they were subsequently threatened with disqualification: https://www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/ncna1274453

Norwegian women's beach handball team fined for not playing in bikinis

While male players are allowed to play in tank tops and shorts, women are required to wear bikini bottoms “with a close fit and cut on an upward angle.”

I will try and watch that on catch-up @EtonMessy who won in the end?

Watching the hockey, I think years of being forced to play it it the mud and cold has irrevocably put me off but watching as Team GB (&NI &other territories 😁)

I won’t say who won in case any other posters want to watch on catch up but it was a great match and worth a watch !
I agree with you about the hockey, hated it at school!!
