Starting a thread as it is only weeks away.

The Welsh cyclist who I saw win a medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and the raising of the Welsh flag will be there- Emma Finucaine, one of the fastest women in the world on a cycle.

Fantastic end to the rowing for GB! Incredible turnaround from one silver and one bronze in Tokyo to eight medals (Inc three golds) this time. Lung-busting stuff! (I'm also enjoying the sight of GB above the USA on the medal table, with 10 golds to their 9 - obviously won't stay that way for long, but nice while it lasts!)

DuncinToffee · 03/08/2024 10:39

I don't normally follow rowing, have they put a lot of extra investment in the sport after Tokyo?

AndNobbyDancing · 03/08/2024 10:46

I don't think so, in fact I thought I read it had been cut as funding is partly linked to medals achieved.
Tokyo was an anomaly, they underperformed and a lot seemed to be focused around the head coach who retired afterwards.

AndNobbyDancing · 03/08/2024 11:06

I'm not a fan of the one false start and out rule.

BestIsWest · 03/08/2024 11:15

me neither. Didn’t it used to be 3 false starts and out?

AndNobbyDancing · 03/08/2024 11:18

It has had several different rules. I get that they need to run to time but prefer it when the whole field got one chance.

Wow Hinchcliffe. Nice to see a young new 100m runner

LightFull · 03/08/2024 12:03

Another false start

They use to allow them

I understand why not

But still these athletes train so hard and I find it a harsh rule after all their hard work

Marshtit · 03/08/2024 12:13

the rowing was such an emotional watch

Marshtit · 03/08/2024 12:14

hopefully the british one with the false start, Azu, will win an appeal,
such a shame

me neither. Didn’t it used to be 3 false starts and out?

i saw the linford christie documentary recently and i thought it was 2 false starts?

burblish · 03/08/2024 12:42

As far as I recall, it used to be two false starts for a DQ (they used to put a yellow marker behind the blocks of athletes who had false started, to keep track of who had already done it!). There was a lot of disgruntlement by athletes when the rules were changed to the current position, but it has massively cut down on the number of false starts (as you'd expect!). I remember it used to be very common for there to be a couple of false starts in every elite 100m race; it is tough on the field when they have to reset so many times, having also expended a lot of energy on the abandoned starts. Instant DQ for one false start does feel very harsh, but the previous system wasn't great either. It's a tough one.

I haven’t rtwt so am not sure if this has been said but I find the contrast between the Olympics and other high level sports is stark. Gold, silver, bronze or without a medal the sportsmanship, respect, ability to celebrate someone else’s deserved win always fills me with joy. Medal or not, the Olympians are the best of their country and the world and the fact that everyone is delighted to be a part of it shines through.

I never plan on watching as much as I do but once they’ve started find myself looking at the schedule daily to see what I need to watch.

The behaviour is a huge contrast to something that you see in the Euros.

Back to Duncan Scott, I hope he gets a knighthood in the new years honours. Why not?

burblish · 03/08/2024 12:52

Poor Emma Wilson looks devastated at getting bronze in the windsurfing.

Marshtit · 03/08/2024 13:10

i think they shoudl at least have 2 false starts - unless of course they are welcome to appeal and may win
it is nerve wracking

BestIsWest · 03/08/2024 13:33

Yes, sorry, 2 false starts not 3!

Totallybannanas · 03/08/2024 15:12

Anyone watching the men's floor routine? Very surprised by Luke Whitehouse score.

burblish · 03/08/2024 15:18

@Totallybannanas Yep, I don't get it either - apparently the judges marked down his starting difficulty level? I was so surprised at his score because I thought he nailed it. Even the commentators were surprised. (Very happy for the brilliant Jake Jarman, of course, who stood to miss out on his bronze.)

jay55 · 03/08/2024 15:24

Luke missed a connection due to a deep landing and thinks he also lost the skill value,

burblish · 03/08/2024 15:34

@jay55 Thanks! I've also just seen Luke's own explanation: "I was down on my difficulty score because I landed my second tumble lower than 90 degrees so they take quite a lot of marks off for that."

I'm running out of superlatives to apply to Simone Biles. There can't be many sports where there is such a gap between the number one and the rest of the elite. A commentator referred to her as a machine, but what I admire most about her is that she has shown just how human she is and has come back stronger than ever.

She's amazing, no doubt.
But when the remarkable person is not American or British we don't hear that much about it. Uchimura, for example.

burblish · 03/08/2024 16:34

@chocolatemousse3 yes, I agree, there is definitely a bias in favour of US and British sports figures. Uchimura is one of my favourites, too. The extent of Biles' dominance, though, is unmatched in modern gymnastics. In my view, you'd have to go back to Vitaly Scherbo in the 1990s for anything even close (his performance at the 1992 Olympics was simply staggering).

MeAgainAndAgain · 03/08/2024 16:45

I’ve only got access to the iPlayer. Can I see the pommel horse now? Or is it radio only? I’ve got what I thought was the right channel on but it seems to be trampolining only.

GradGirl · 03/08/2024 16:47

Pommel has just started on iplayer.
