Harsh on the players

Canada has been deducted 6 points in women’s soccer at the Olympics.

Just now from FIFA.

Fined 200,000 CHF too.

Bev Priestman, Jasmine Mander and Joey Lombardi suspended from football activities for one year.

CAS appeal possible.

Wow. Yes, very harsh on the players. They won't be progressing with 3 points max. The team will have benefited from the information gleaned by underhand means, but it's a bit East Germany "vitamin pills".

I wonder what the repercussions will be for Priestman?

DuncinToffee · 27/07/2024 18:51

Spain just won the U19 Euros

That's full house for them, isn't it. World champs at U17, U19 and senior level. I expect they will win the Olympic Gold as well. The new and improved USA could stop them, but no-one else.

BellaAmorosa · 27/07/2024 19:26

Sorry - I realise it's the Euros but Spain are world champs at U19 level as well.

MustTryHarderAndHarder · 27/07/2024 20:52

How are Spain producing such amazing women (and men) footballers?

They are going to have a stranglehold on the Senior Euros and probably the World Cup for the foreseeable future.

MustTryHarderAndHarder · 28/07/2024 20:59

Spain have just won the U19 mens Euros.

BellaAmorosa · 28/07/2024 21:42

World domination.

World domination.

Yes.

Did anyone watch the Aus v Zambia match yesterday? 11 goals. The Arsenal trio played the whole 100+ minutes and will be exhausted.

Ford was exhausted from the start! Kept running because she is a trooper, but her decision-making and execution in the box was poor and that's always a tell for me.
Well deserved result for Australia and Steph Catley was Captain Fantastic.

DuncinToffee · 29/07/2024 09:38

I followed a bit on twitter but the celebration of a certain player put me off, glad Australia won in the end.

The France game had 16 extra minutes because of injuries and also a dramatic late goal to seal the win for Canada.

The Canadians seem to have reacted well to the punishment of points deduction and I hope it is reduced to 3. It's not the team's fault although they can't be seen to benefit from the illicitly obtained information, I suppose.

I'm annoyed again about teams in the Uefa area not being allowed more places. There are 3 groups of 4 countries and 8 go through to the next round. We could have had another group of 4. There are three very good European teams which should be there.

And as for Zambia, I wish them ill, along with any other team that is fielding men in the women's competition. I also curse FIFA for allowing it. Ditto the IOC, also for telling journalists they mustn't use accurate language - words like "male" - to describe these men. Bastards.

MustTryHarderAndHarder · 30/07/2024 16:13

Well, Spain aren't super human. Their U23s have just lost 1-2 to Egypt.

MustTryHarderAndHarder · 30/07/2024 16:17

Elneny was playing.

Oh, how lovely. Very much the over-age player. I found him so endearing. Always willing to help out and play wherever.

And Lacazette was playing for the France U23s the other day.

BellaAmorosa · 30/07/2024 16:45

Oh, actually, I remember seeing that somewhere, but I'd forgotten. Are we still at the group stage? I'm limiting my viewing to the women's comp just for time management purposes.

MustTryHarderAndHarder · 30/07/2024 16:46

Yes, we are. Egypt are top of their group.

BellaAmorosa · 30/07/2024 16:48

It's interesting how much closer all the countries are at that level, than at senior level.

DuncinToffee · 31/07/2024 12:14

I see that Arsenal have signed Daphne van Domselaar

BellaAmorosa · 31/07/2024 12:17

Woo-hoo! 💃

MustTryHarderAndHarder · 31/07/2024 21:30

I watched the Aus USA game earlier.

I didn't know who to support. I wanted Emma Hayes to lose, but I also wanted our Aus trio to go back to Arsenal.

MustTryHarderAndHarder · 03/08/2024 22:02

I'm so pleased that there is only one Arsenal player (Emily Fox who went of injured) left in the Olympics.

The minutes they are playing is ridiculous. The Spain Columbia game went on for ever and the Columbians were dead on their feet.

There shouldn't be extra time it should go straight to penalties.

MrsMitford3 · 05/08/2024 18:30

@MustTryHarderAndHarder Apparently Emily training today 😅

BellaAmorosa · 05/08/2024 19:15

Phew! I really hope Emma Hayes doesn't start her tomorrow, though.
