Haven't found a thread for Olympic sports discussions so I'm starting one. This thread is only for discussions of the actual sporting events as they happen over the next few weeks, not the unfairness of IOC's rules/philosophy (e.g. allowing a male athlete to declare himself a woman and compete in the women's category...which is immoral, unscientific, and wholly unjust, but that topic already has multiple separate threads).

Although this will be an Olympics like no other, I'm excited for the opening ceremony tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing gymnastics and swimming especially!

Just watched Dina’s interview. What a special person she is. First, she congratulated her team-mate. Then she thanked her team for getting her to the start line. Only then did she speak about herself.

She will be back, and she will win again.

Do I assume from these reactions that the Jamaican women sprinters do not get along , could at least make an effort to fake being happy for the one that won . Brilliant run by the winner .

Yes it looked a bit awkward. They will be almost unbeatable in a 4 x 100m relay though (assuming they have another super fast teammate)

The commentators said they didn't get on - it was definitely awkward. Amazing performances though!

The BBC pundits are talking about the women’s 800m final, it’s great, we have three women in the final. Shame none of them mentioned the Rio 800 final when Lynsey Sharp, a UK runner was denied a bronze medal because the first three places were taken by biological men.

Elite sport doesn’t have to be all nicey-nicey all the time. A bit of needle can spice things up and create drama. Remember Coe & Ovett? They put middle-distance running on the front pages, never mind the back pages.

Not really, but it only seemed to be gold left out. Silver and bronze were together.

It's a competitive sport, and to come out on top you need to be competitive, so not to odd if it's not always nicey nicey.

No it doesn’t always need to be nice but would it really hurt to slap a smile on your face and congratulate the winner .

No it doesn't have to be nicey-nicey all the time but it was a Jamaica 123. They are all running for the same team. You would have thought they could have congratulated her properly rather than a quick tap on the back.
