OLYMPICS 2021

Haven't found a thread for Olympic sports discussions so I'm starting one. This thread is only for discussions of the actual sporting events as they happen over the next few weeks, not the unfairness of IOC's rules/philosophy (e.g. allowing a male athlete to declare himself a woman and compete in the women's category...which is immoral, unscientific, and wholly unjust, but that topic already has multiple separate threads).

Although this will be an Olympics like no other, I'm excited for the opening ceremony tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing gymnastics and swimming especially!

They did congratulate her - all be it briefly!!

Floralnomad · 31/07/2021 15:47

Fraser -Pryce tapped her on the back with a face that looked like it was chewing wasps ,not sporting at all .

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 31/07/2021 15:55

Jumping back a bit, but the triathlon relay was fantastic!

AndJonnyBrownleeDancing · 31/07/2021 16:03

It was, I've watched it twice as the kid wanted to watch, enjoyed it more the second time.

Floralnomad · 31/07/2021 16:14

I think I preferred the relay to the main events in the triathlon, probably because of the shorter distances involved for each section which I think made it more exciting .

Mooserp · 31/07/2021 19:21

I agree. The individual tri has become quite boring with the 'easy' courses and multiple laps.

Watching the highlight prog now and Michael Johnson was talking about the beef with the Jamaican sprinters.

It seems a bit silly to have a falling out just because one is now coached by the other ones ex coach. There are only so many world class coaches.

Mooserp · 31/07/2021 19:53

I feel like there's more to it but maybe he couldn't say

Polkadotties · 31/07/2021 20:37

Anyone else staying up tonight to watch the cross country?

blameitonthecaffeine · 31/07/2021 20:52

I love Dina Asher-Smith. Gutted for her. (On a totally irrelevant side note, still being able to look that stunning when crying shouldn't be allowed Wink )

I really wanted to see the pole vault but it wasn't shown. Going to try and hunt it down somewhere.

Might stay up for cross country but I've been getting so tired trying to watch things live - mostly watch hours and hours behind now and try to avoid the news and social media until I'm caught up.

Floralnomad · 31/07/2021 20:57

The pole vault qualifying is on catch up on Discovery + , we watched it earlier .

Yes! Me and dd Not sure I'll get through it all mind!
Ekofisk · 31/07/2021 21:44

I’m cursing that I’ve signed myself up to work tomorrow, so I miss the end of the swimming and the cross country.

I’m hoping that iPlayer is my friend.

blameitonthecaffeine · 31/07/2021 21:50

Thanks floral!

AndJonnyBrownleeDancing · 31/07/2021 22:06

I'm all behind, what is the cross country and when, Google just said in last happened in 1924

Polkadotties · 31/07/2021 22:14

Cross country is the middle phase of equestrian eventing. They do three phases, dressage, cross country and showjumping

AndJonnyBrownleeDancing · 31/07/2021 22:24

Horses! Thanks shows my ignorance, I learnt a lot on the dressage thread. Feel wired so sleep is unlikely so will be watching.

DuncinToffee · 31/07/2021 22:44

I am not interested in the horse events, hoping to stay up for BMX and/or swimming but not sure if I make it Grin

storminasnowglobe · 31/07/2021 23:20

I had a nap earlier in preparation for the XC phase of the Eventing! Not sure it's worked though as already feeling sleepy and still another 25 mins before it even starts Grin

Polkadotties · 31/07/2021 23:52

Come on Oliver! Come home safe!

storminasnowglobe · 01/08/2021 00:02

Oliver makes it look so easy. Feel so sorry for the first Thai rider - such a shame for them

AbsolutelyPatsy · 01/08/2021 08:27

Happylittlethoughts · 01/08/2021 08:32

Buggerthebotox · 01/08/2021 10:37
