Haven't found a thread for Olympic sports discussions so I'm starting one. This thread is only for discussions of the actual sporting events as they happen over the next few weeks, not the unfairness of IOC's rules/philosophy (e.g. allowing a male athlete to declare himself a woman and compete in the women's category...which is immoral, unscientific, and wholly unjust, but that topic already has multiple separate threads).

Although this will be an Olympics like no other, I'm excited for the opening ceremony tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing gymnastics and swimming especially!

Just watched the swimming mixed medley relay - what an amazing swim and fantastic comeback despite a slip start at the beginning.

And a world record to boot 🤩

Kathleen Dawson did an amazing backstroke leg given she had two huge guys next to her creating really choppy water.

Fabulous swim from the Team! Didn't see the Triathlon so will have to catch up later. So glad for the Brownlee twin.

How does that work? Obvs the 2 that make the final will get gold and silver....but wont there be 2 losers...? They wont both get a medal? I'm confused.

I am loving watching Team GB, really inspiring and they all come over lovely in the interviews.

you mean they award two bronze medals even if there isn't a tie? I thought a bronze medal match would mean one came third and one came fourth!

There is no bronze medal match in boxing. The semi final losers both get bronze.

oh interesting, seems a slightly odd way of doing it compared to most sports! I wonder why not have a bronze match?

Why do the reserve relay swimmers not get their medal on the podium? Twice now I’ve seen videos of swimmers who swam in the qualifiers but not the final get a medal, but in a tiny “backstage” made up british swimming ceremony.

Surely if they get a medal they should stand on the podium with the rest?

Now I appreciate not everyone will be watching the same channel as me (RTE) so might not seeing thr same as me. Also this might seem a random question. But does anyone know why the discus throwers came out with such showmanship?

I mean it was great fun to watch but have all athletics come out one by one like that?

That’s how they come out at all major events for the finals now , it’s so the athletes have their moment .
