Haven't found a thread for Olympic sports discussions so I'm starting one. This thread is only for discussions of the actual sporting events as they happen over the next few weeks, not the unfairness of IOC's rules/philosophy (e.g. allowing a male athlete to declare himself a woman and compete in the women's category...which is immoral, unscientific, and wholly unjust, but that topic already has multiple separate threads).

Although this will be an Olympics like no other, I'm excited for the opening ceremony tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing gymnastics and swimming especially!

Omg. I forgot about Michael. Maybe they could get him and Lutalo together on their own show. I was wasn’t a massive Michael fan when I was younger #teamRogerBlack but oh my he can talk athletics to me any time.

At London 2017, I volunteered and my role allowed me to meet quite a few athletes. It was amazing and I have applied to volunteer at the Commonwealths next year in Birmingham.

Poor McColgan she has been running really well this year.

I've really enjoyed the Rugby 7s, both women's and men's. I heard that the mens team were worried about funding and support after failing to get the bronze. It does seem a ridiculous system. I really want to go to a Rgby 7s tournament now, it's way more entertaining than normal Rubgy.

Just watched a judo final - no clue what that's about. They just seemed to paw at each other and take a few side steps. Weird!

Watching the triathlon too; it's rather exciting. To add to the fun, I keep spotting bits of the location I half-recognise - we went to Tokyo on holiday a couple of times and went out to Odaiba...I recognise the big Ferris wheel they show occasionally. There's a whole indoor mall there built in the style of an Italian Renaissance village, complete with artificially-lighted sky that changes from dawn to dusk. Bonkers but fun.

Argh, chewing my nails watching the tri relay. Alex Yee is a brilliant runner but Luis is someone you do not want to be sprinting against!!

Yayyyyy! Alex Yee is awesome. So happy that Jonny B gets an Olympic gold at last. Hopefully triathlon will get great funding for the next cycle.

(Side note: Vincent Luis looks completely different and much better without the bleached-blond hairdo he used to have!)
