OLYMPICS 2021

Haven't found a thread for Olympic sports discussions so I'm starting one. This thread is only for discussions of the actual sporting events as they happen over the next few weeks, not the unfairness of IOC's rules/philosophy (e.g. allowing a male athlete to declare himself a woman and compete in the women's category...which is immoral, unscientific, and wholly unjust, but that topic already has multiple separate threads).

Although this will be an Olympics like no other, I'm excited for the opening ceremony tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing gymnastics and swimming especially!

@Halsall

They certainly showed the GB heat - it was about 2.45pm yesterday. Fabulous.

Ekofisk · 30/07/2021 12:30

The women’s rugby 7s is proving amazing.

Halsall · 30/07/2021 12:33

Thanks, Ekofisk, very useful, I'll look for it based on that!

DuncinToffee · 30/07/2021 12:34

I enjoyed the football but not the result. GB's defending was poor this match but Ellen White and Sam Kerr were great.⚽️

Time to switch some of rowing's funding away towards so called minority sports which in which many people actually participate?
Discuss!

DuncinToffee · 30/07/2021 12:43

Which minority sports?
Also does rowing get a lot of funding compared to other sports?

Quartz2208 · 30/07/2021 13:05

In 2012 it got the most funding - hard to see since then whether it still does.

I imagine it is worried though

I think it got 27 million after Rio in 2016

Whoops

Ekofisk · 30/07/2021 13:12

Rowing has had £24 million in funding over the 4 year cycle and only got half of its 4 medal target.

I suspect it’s funding will be lower for the next 4 year cycle.

DuncinToffee · 30/07/2021 13:16

I didn't know that, thanks for the info.

The BMX gold medal winner Shriever needed crowdfunding to go to Tokyo.

Buggerthebotox · 30/07/2021 13:16

Just come on to express delight at Michael Johnson's return. Squee Grin.

Watching the 10k now. Loving it.

Ekofisk · 30/07/2021 13:20

Shriever also had 18 months out after breaking her tibia and fibula, having it pinned, and then the pin bending and breaking her leg again when she landed her first jump back into training.

It’s a bit shit the way funding is designed. Catch 22- you only get the funding if you win olympic medals, but how do you get the medals without the funding? Then because it’s based on the olympics, it’s 4 years of no/lower funding to try and get your medal target.

That’s apart from the fact no one can predict who will get the medal, they could all do huge PB’s and world records and still not get any.

It also means athletes can’t really pull out like simone Biles did- don't compete, no medal, no funding.

Funding needs a big rethink.

DuncinToffee · 30/07/2021 13:24

Wow what an achievement then!
Ekofisk · 30/07/2021 13:32

British Cycling was awarded £35 million for the Paris 2024 funding cycle - hope some of that gets channelled into the less high profile cycling disciplines.

Iknowthiswillendbutwhen · 30/07/2021 13:33

There are stories in the papers about there having been difficulties in the rowing camp post Jürgen Grobler as coach. No idea if just scurrilous gossip or not.

Ekofisk · 30/07/2021 13:36

Looks like rowing already has a 10% funding cut for the Paris 2024 cycle.

It is really great to see Michael Johnson back in the studio. And to see him looking so fit and well. He's one of my favourite pundits.

Shock
PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 30/07/2021 13:42

Nasty accident in the hockey, and the USA disqualified from the relay. It's all going wrong this lunchtime!

Bryonyshcmyony · 30/07/2021 13:46

And mccolgan injured
And we lost the football

Sad
Ekofisk · 30/07/2021 14:03

Two overnight medals in the pool though - plus men’s 4x100 medley team and 1500m swimmer Dan Jervis through to finals.

CaptainCallisto · 30/07/2021 14:11

I thought Eilish McColgan was very measured and eloquent in that post-race interview. She's also looking more like her mother every time I see her!

And other rowers saying that if there were problems they should have been brought up prior to the olympics, I'd imagine if they had won there would be no criticism, coaches can only carry so much blame.

But as we’ve seen, anyone bringing up complaints about coaches or NGB prior to the olympics risk their selection. There is no way anyone in with a shot would have done that.
