Haven't found a thread for Olympic sports discussions so I'm starting one. This thread is only for discussions of the actual sporting events as they happen over the next few weeks, not the unfairness of IOC's rules/philosophy (e.g. allowing a male athlete to declare himself a woman and compete in the women's category...which is immoral, unscientific, and wholly unjust, but that topic already has multiple separate threads).

Although this will be an Olympics like no other, I'm excited for the opening ceremony tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing gymnastics and swimming especially!

I'm watching the gymnastics on Eurosport. Is that free? We don't have any other sports channels so I presumed it must be

It's swapping back and forth between BBC 1 and 2, but they are telling us when to switch, so that's OK.

I like the gymnastics commentator, very clearly tells us what is bad and good about various routines, can point out all the small faults like non-pointed feet or whatever, but in a neutral way, doesn't sound critical - more explaining what they have done wrong, come out of a turn early or whatever, that meant the move didn't work. And then is also very positive when they do really good work, for gymansts from whatever country. You can tell she's been a coach and/or judge.

kids and I have just invented a new Olympic sport : synchronised car door slamming
it's quite fun
DD was a bit late with the slam (great arm control but slight delay) but she was ruthless and only gave herself 8 out of 10🤣

Bmxing for me, booked afternoon off to spend with kids but they've had a better offer so I was very magnanimous secretly pleased and said they should go with their friends. Now I've got the big TV

Agree, sadly completely under represented/respected in our social media world. These are the women our children should be in awe of, beyond proud

If anyone is unsure Eurosports is free for 3 days and then £29.99 for a year (special offer) whilst I'm aggrieved I had to pay for what should be free, it's been brilliant having all the other sports. The bmx has not disappointed

Completely agree - I watched it through the night - they are just amazing!

I had a little cry. What amazing women for both of them they had so much on other than just focusing on the sport. Helen was breastfeeding twins for most of her training. Polly is going back yo work as a hospital doctor on Tuesday.

I'm really proud of Emma Twigg in the Rowing. This is 4th Olympics, she's 34, has come out of retirement to go for that medal, and she absolutely smashed it today. Amazing.

Does anyone know if they showed the heats of the mixed swimming relay? I'm struggling to find it on catch-up - it would have been in the small hours if live and I'm not dedicated enough to stay up!

Not a fan of BMX racing but great performances from the GB team and it was lovely to see Kye so excited about Bethany winning gold

I loved the BMX, I know it makes me a bad person but love a sport where there is a chance to crash out, have so much respect for people who put themselves at such risk was very exciting.

Yes and rowing have been really disappointing so far. 27m in funding since Rio!

Same as ski/snowboard cross in the Winter Olympics. So quick and dramatic

Just flipped over to the athletics - the football was not doing my blood pressure any good!
