Haven't found a thread for Olympic sports discussions so I'm starting one. This thread is only for discussions of the actual sporting events as they happen over the next few weeks, not the unfairness of IOC's rules/philosophy (e.g. allowing a male athlete to declare himself a woman and compete in the women's category...which is immoral, unscientific, and wholly unjust, but that topic already has multiple separate threads).

Although this will be an Olympics like no other, I'm excited for the opening ceremony tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing gymnastics and swimming especially!

Simone made uncharacteristic mistakes in qualifications, but saying she was 'all over the place' is an exaggeration. She qualified for all finals, not easy by any means.

She made more mistakes than anyone else. Definitely something going on there - pressure?

I meant for her, sorry that was badly worded. It's very unusual for her to make any mistakes in a major competition, and she did it on several. There's been so much pressure heaped on her for this games (from all corners, not just the US), I wouldn't be at all surprised if it's getting to her.

As much as I love Lutalo it will be a fucking travesty not to show Charlotte Dujardin.

Mine too! I love the way he explained the technical detail so calmly instead of just rattling off a load of impenetrable jargon (cough, skateboarding) so you actually start appreciating the skill of the competitors.

He is surely going to be getting loads of offers for tv work

I thought I read he wanted to be in this Olympics but wasn't selected. Hopefully he will have a silver lining

Gutted about this too and don't understand why. They were battling for a medal yet none of it was shown.

British gymnastics girls have just won team bronze and we hardly saw any of them perform . The host feed just didn't cover it.
Well done to them though!

Thought Pumpkin did massively well for such a young horse. Well done to Chatlotte and Carl.

He's not as flash as some of the German horses though. Germany of course did superbly.

I love Lutalo - its odd but I think not being chosen for this Olympics may actually be the best thing - he was such a good commentator and well liked.
