OLYMPICS 2021

Haven't found a thread for Olympic sports discussions so I'm starting one. This thread is only for discussions of the actual sporting events as they happen over the next few weeks, not the unfairness of IOC's rules/philosophy (e.g. allowing a male athlete to declare himself a woman and compete in the women's category...which is immoral, unscientific, and wholly unjust, but that topic already has multiple separate threads).

Although this will be an Olympics like no other, I'm excited for the opening ceremony tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing gymnastics and swimming especially!

agree re Skateboarding (I think all of them in the womens - well teenage girls) compeyition fell off at least once.
Disclaimer Im pretty sure I would be shit at skateboarding but it just didn't feel that special (compared to kids skateboarders I've seen in general)

I agree, I wonder if this is a funding issue. The kids down the local park are better but being a new sport the pathways into it are narrow and expensive.

Love the Tom Dean family and friends reaction 😊

CaptainCallisto · 27/07/2021 08:50

Just watched Kimberley Woods in the canoeing final. She had an absolute mare - it was heartbreaking to watch. She came over the finish in tears and the cameras just stayed on her while she broke down. I hate it when they do that!

So do I, they showed the Japanese women crying after the diving, both that and Kimberley set me off, kids think I'm crazy but I just know how much it means.

Mooserp · 27/07/2021 08:59

Mooserp · 27/07/2021 08:59

There's a dedicated Olympics section now in sporting events

Bryonyshcmyony · 27/07/2021 09:00

Shouldn't this thread be in it?

Bryonyshcmyony · 27/07/2021 09:01

I'm about to settle down for the Dressage with dd

AbsolutelyPatsy · 27/07/2021 09:02

oh i do like the dressage

JacquelineCarlyle · 27/07/2021 09:08

I agree with you @AndbothTomsaredancing I just think he's a terrible presenter so at least if he had the sporting background that would redeem him a little. I also think Dan Walker is awful too.

Not a fab of Sam Quek either but appreciate that she's an Olympian so she bothers me much less (plus she's so much less experienced with presenting that I hope she gets better with time).

Gutted I didn't get up in the night to watch the swimming this time - sounds amazing and his story with Covid makes it all a pretty huge feat that he achieved!

@Bryonyshcmyony

yes.
I've already asked MNHQ to move it, they will do it soon.

Floralnomad · 27/07/2021 10:19

@Bryonyshcmyony

My controversial opinion of the day is that the skateboarding was dull to watch and not worthy of the Olympics AND that there should be a minimum age for competitors. 17+
Not controversial at all . I’m not actually sure skateboarding is a sport , it’s certainly a talent / skill but not necessarily a sport . I’m fairly sure I’ve seen better street skateboarding down our local park / town than was on display here . I also don’t get why they keep falling off as they are supposed to be professional, I get the odd accident but it is every other run/ trick here .
Bryonyshcmyony · 27/07/2021 10:20

Yes they just weren't very good!

CaptainCallisto · 27/07/2021 10:24

Oh my goodness, that rugby match was a wee bit tense! Come on GB!

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 27/07/2021 10:52

thanks MNHQ for moving thread into its rightful place!🍾🥂🏆

DuncinToffee · 27/07/2021 11:04

Guess I am one of the few who enjoyed the skateboarding then Grin

I do agree on the age issue, 13 is too young imo.

I am watching the rugby 7 at the moment, not a rugby fan at all but I don't mind watching this set-up. Would be a good idea to change the football tournament in a similar way, play futsal for example.

DuncinToffee · 27/07/2021 11:07

And regarding the limited BBC coverage, it is explained in this article

www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/articles/2021/olympic-games-moments

In 2016 we announced that the IOC had awarded the pan-European rights for the Olympics to Discovery, meaning that free-to-air broadcasters across Europe had to carve out their own sub-licence deals with Discovery. The result for all European broadcasters was less coverage of the Games, and for us, it means that we’re allowed two live streams - one on BBC One and one that is available to play out on BBC iPlayer, red button and the BBC Sport website.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 27/07/2021 12:09

I don't know whether to watch the gymnastics or the dressage!

I'm in work today (after nearly 16 hours of solid watching yesterday ooops) I've got the dressage on my phone on mute and listening to the gymnastics commentary through laptop. Although Bloody customer keep coming in, so rude.
Theforest · 27/07/2021 12:19

So what's happening with Simone Biles??

CaptainCallisto · 27/07/2021 12:36

She was all over the place in quali, so I'm wondering if that dodgy vault has shaken her to the point she thinks she's a liability for the team. When she left the gym the look on her face was basically "fuck this I'm off" and she didn't look too happy coming back in either. Maybe all the expectation is getting to her?
