As in previous years, footy fans please sign in with

  1. Which team you support.
  2. Which team(s) you loathe.
  3. How you are getting your kids to follow the correct team.
  4. A thought on this season (Premiership/Championship/Champions’ League/FA Cup/any leagues world wide/fallout from the World Cup.)

How many clubs is it now that he's been sacked from during the third season? Why don't clubs know the script by now?

So who will be the next manager?

"Spurs better watch out, they better not cry..."

Newbie here.

  1. LFC
  2. Man U
  3. DS supports Reading (someone has to) but will definitely be more inclined to LFC than his Dad's team
  4. It's our year of course!

So this thread appeared on acrive due to Jose's current pay off in time for having Christmas off.

I am in the Far East and had to resort to LFC online audio commentary for the Man u match which was atrocious as it was merely a list of names rather than a description of play like radio commentary normally is. Also Aldridge was sooooo negative even at 3-1 up!

HiHoToffee · 18/12/2018 12:38

Big Sam to the rescue!?

Oblomov18 · 18/12/2018 12:52

Oh come on. As if Potch is gonna leavers Spurs for Man U. They are saying wenger is more likely.

Spurs have been poor recently.
Dortmund?
Southampton did well to beat Arsenal.
Watched the Liverpool v Man U game.
I didn't actually believe they'd sack Mourinho till Jan. shows what I know!

Liverpool? Playing brilliantly. But tbf they did have 246 million ? on the bench with their recent mahoosive spend?
I think Man City will struggle to catch them. It's between those 2 now.

BelfastBloke · 18/12/2018 13:30

Welcome ShalomJackie.

Don't you do minute-by-minute updates from the Guardian? That's what I do when I can't see a game. It works better with ball-by-ball games like cricket and tennis, but footy's still pretty decent on it.

OP posts:
BelfastBloke · 18/12/2018 13:32

Oblomov, you're speaking as if it's ridiculous to think that Potch might leave for Man Utd. Why?
I never thought he'd be tempted away by Real Madrid at the current moment, but surely Man Utd would be ideal for him?

OP posts:
Oblomov18 · 18/12/2018 13:36

No. I don't see it. He's building at Spurs. He's happy there, doing well. Would like more money to buy more players. Who wouldn't?

Man U? I don't see the appeal for him.
I could totally understand if RM came calling. Who could say no?

The Guardian asks who will be the next Man U manager. Roy Keane's available but has destroyed his reputation after his time as Republic of Ireland's assistant manager. I don't know if this is in order of bookie's favourites or anything, but it looks like it might be:

Zinedine Zidane
The former France international is currently out of work after leaving Real Madrid last summer following the victory over Liverpool in the Champions League final. Remarkably, that was his third triumph in the competition in only two and a half years in charge. Is unlikely to join a club until next summer, which could suit United.

Mauricio Pochettino
Pochettino is highly regarded at Old Trafford after his superb work at Southampton and Tottenham. The former Espanyol and Paris St-Germain defender joined Spurs in 2014 and has finished fifth, third, second and third in his four seasons in charge, bettering United’s league position in two of those seasons despite operating on a much smaller budget.

Eddie Howe
The 41-year-old has impressed in his two spells at Bournemouth, taking the club into the Premier League during the second one and establishing them in the top division. His attack-minded brand of football would suit United too with an emphasis on speed and high pressing.

Antonio Conte
The Italian had a remarkable impact at Chelsea, winning the Premier League title in his first season in charge, having effectively replaced José Mourinho as the club’s manager (Guus Hiddink took over as caretaker manager in 2015-16). Chelsea also reached the FA Cup final in 2017, but they lost to Arsenal and Conte’s relationship with the players deteriorated during this second season in charge. He left the club last summer with one year left on his contract and is unlikely to take a new job until the summer.

Carlo Ancelotti
The vastly experienced Italian is currently in charge of Napoli, having taken over from Maurizio Sarri last summer. He has proven European pedigree with three Champions League titles under his belt (two with Milan and one with Real Madrid) and has experience of English football after his spell at Chelsea. His time at Bayern, however, ended prematurely and he left early during his second season in charge.

Diego Simeone
The Argentinian has been linked with many, many moves away from Atlético Madrid but he is still there, seven years after being appointed manager of the Spanish club in 2011. He has been outstandingly successful considering the fact that he has to battle against Real Madrid and Barcelona and their vastly superior finances year in and year out. He has won one La Liga, two Europa Leagues and reached two Champions League finals.

Laurent Blanc
A former Manchester United defender, the Frenchman has been out of work since leaving Paris St-Germain in 2016. Had two years in charge of the France national team after being appointed in 2010 but stepped down after losing against Spain at the Euro 2012 quarter-final stage.

Michael Carrick
This opening has surely come too soon for the former United midfielder. He joined Mourinho’s coaching staff this season and has expressed a desire to become a manager but has no experience and is not in the running for the interim role United want to fill until the end of this campaign.

Gareth Southgate
Took England to the World Cup semi-finals in Russia last summer, having completely reinvigorated the national team. Has showed since taking over that he is able to get the best out young players and topped a tough Nations League group before Spain and Croatia to qualify for next year’s finals.

Ryan Giggs
Stepped in as caretaker at United at the end of the 2013-14 season when David Moyes was sacked in April. He won two games, drew one and lost one. He took over as Wales manager in January 2018, replacing Chris Coleman, but has had mixed results so far. He has beaten the Republic of Ireland twice but lost to Albania in a friendly in his latest game in charge.

Pogba on Twitter today. He is a disgrace. Great footballer. Idiot re his character and arrogance.

BitOutOfPractice · 18/12/2018 14:45

I really really really hope Pochettino stays at Spurs. I hate the biggest clubs swooping in for whoever they fancy regardless of where a manager is in his contract.

In other news I am a VERY happy Wolves fan Grin

ShalomJackie · 18/12/2018 16:28

They are saying maybe Solksjaer (?spelling).

Also saw someone say Moyes still has 6 months left on his contract with them Grin

BitOutOfPractice · 18/12/2018 16:43

Yeah, Moyes isn't looking so terrible now is he? Grin

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 18/12/2018 21:23

Footballs a funny thing. After beating juventus there was a lot of talk of comeback and how Jose was back... Then roll on weeks later. Know every club fans do it just seemed in out in out in out..

I think predicting top 4 place by December was way to optimistic from Jose. Shame cause he used to be such a good manager. Did so well with us.. 2nd time round lost the way a lot. To much talking.

WhiteHartLane · 18/12/2018 21:24

Don't understand why Man U are only looking at a temp manager til the summer? Have they written off this season already? Harsh on the fans as an interim manager wouldn't be given much to spend in the transfers. Doesn't Ole manage a club? Would the fans be happy with him after relegating Cardiff? So many questions lol.

As for Poch, the money that would be available to him would be tempting and I'm sure he would take a few Spurs players with him (Erikson, Ali), but he won't have Champions League. But I do have to admit he would be a good fit there, more so than Zidane.

ShalomJackie · 19/12/2018 02:27

If Poch was to go somewhere for ££££ surely he'd go to RM or Barca. Going to Man U at the moment would be a step backwards.

ShalomJackie · 19/12/2018 02:30

Also I think the reason they are going for a caretaker manager is to give them time to find the right person rather than making a kneejerk further expensive mistake. If they only have a contracy for a short period there is no massive buyout clause. If the CM does well maybe they will get the gig! If not they have more time to find the right man for the job. So yes I thinl thia year os written off and if CM does well its a bonus+

ShalomJackie · 19/12/2018 02:30

Excuse typos!!!

BelfastBloke · 19/12/2018 12:20

It seems that Poch is the number one target.

The choice he has to make is:
At Spurs he has not much money, but a supportive chairman
At Man U he'd have a lot more money (and good players) but a dodgy chairman and structure.

OP posts:
BitOutOfPractice · 19/12/2018 13:02

Well the players he has at Spurs aren't too shabby!

Oblomov18 · 19/12/2018 22:10

Loved spurs beating Arsenal in the cup. Even better to see piers Morgan in a Spurs shirt! Smile

BelfastBloke · 20/12/2018 08:58

Why was Piers Morgan in a Spurs shirt? Was it a bet?

OP posts:
BelfastBloke · 20/12/2018 09:02

Actually don't tell me; I've found that editing Piers Morgan out of my life completely has been good for my health.

Have to admit, we did get a bit quiet down our end of the stadium last night.

Like all the spurs fans, we stayed to the end last night, unlike a lot of Arse fans. And unlike the spurs fans two weeks ago...

OP posts:
WhiteHartLane · 20/12/2018 10:10

Nice to get a win last night, bit of revenge for the match lost 2 weeks back. Dele's goal was a beauty and good to see Poch making his subs early.

HiHoToffee · 20/12/2018 11:45

I see that Everton and Tottenham have the toughest festive fixtures, Arsenal not much better but Wolves, Man City and Liverpool are ok.

The Everton team have been visiting Alder Hey, always lovely to see the children and their parents' reaction Xmas Smile
