That's it. She is 18 and has refused to have the toenails dealt with properly. They have been persistent for a couple of years on her big toes - both sides. Frequently they bled and we have been on and on at her, as they usually look foul.
Anyway, today she saw some little white grains on the toes and after taking a pic to blow the image up, we could see they were flies eggs!! I cannot get over the image in my mind.
I scraped them off and we soaked her feet in water with disinfectant. I can't help worrying that I didn't get them all out.
Obviously she is now going to go to the Dr about them.

Is this too grim a picture for Sporners corner?

@PurpleButterflyWings
I can only assume you haven't had experience of a willful child? I have three kids - the oldest would do as he was told, the youngest will moan and refuse but will ultimately do as he is told. The middle one - if she doesn't want to do it, there's NO WAY I could make her do it. She started refusing school at 14 and was later diagnosed with autism. A stubborn child is a nightmare, and obviously all those accusing the OP of all sorts have never experienced what it's like. I suspect quite a few have compliant toddlers.

Are you me? This is the same as my 3 😆

Ingrown toenails in themselves are not dangerous however skin infections and wounds can be life threatening. Her toe itself looks like the skin is discoloured. Go to A&e today and for gods sake get that seen.

Usetobeanurse · 05/06/2022 15:18

I use to love using leeches and maggots on wounds of course they were all lab-grown specimens and sterile. OP hope your daughter is okay. I don't think she will lose her toes she is young fit and healthy, however, I agree that she needs to be seen asap by a Doctor even if it is not a specialist at this stage she can start on a treatment path after being assessed. Most walk-in centres have Doctors onsite. My Dad had a badly infected toe and he was started on antibiotics before he was seen by a specialist. He is elderly with poor circulation, and poor mobility and his toe was black and putrid (not gangrene thankfully). You and your daughter will look back and laugh about this one day. I hope she does well in her GCSEs.

Good flies, they've laid eggs and alerted you to a serious problem. That toe looks actually necrotic and I wish I hadn't been eating when I looked at it.

Also I wasn't even aware this corner of MN existed, although I have a weird relative who is obsessed by those pimple popping videos. The variety and breadth of things humans enjoy is truly fascinating.

Hope the toe turns out okay and some serious conversations are had about hygiene and not letting parts of you literally rot off due to embarrassment or discomfort with going to the doctor.

Dr Pimple Popper is amazing!

Fluffycloudland77 · 05/06/2022 18:51

I always feel bad putting maggots in the clinical waste bin though, thanks for all the hard work now here’s a fiery death.

For all those saying maggots are good are bonkers!!!!
The maggots that are used in hospital settings are grown in a lab and are sterile not some random fly thats landed on god knows what !

That's what most people have said about maggots.
That maggots are good but they need to he specially bred for lab use. Not random fly egg maggots.

Placemarking for pic. Never did I think I'd be so desperate to see a photo of fly eggs festering away in an ingrown toenail

Just catching up with this - but I’m with you 🤣🙈

LookingforMaryPoppins · 06/06/2022 17:44

Please seek medical attention asap - we have pet sheep and fly strike (as this is known in livestock) progresses really fast. Definitely clean the area thoroughly and soak in salt water / antiseptic but do also seek professional advice asap - the chemicals we use on the sheep are really potent!

Chrissy89 · 06/06/2022 17:49

She needs her nails removing, no saving them.

Slv199 · 06/06/2022 18:18

If she is waiting until next week to see someone keep an eye out for tracking. This is a red line of infection spreading to the lymph nodes. If this happens she needs to be seen immediately otherwise it can get very serious.

Livinthedream84 · 06/06/2022 18:28

my sons toes looked like this at her age (no flies eggs though). He didn’t lose his toenails permanently but he did have to have a huge needle down his toe nail and the nail removed. He was also on strong antibiotics. The doctor said it could have lead to sepsis, removal of the toe even death. It’s serious she needs it sorting. It’s scary having to go when it’s so sore but it’s best delt with sooner rather than later

HazelNutterButter · 06/06/2022 18:33

This is revolting 🤢 Hope she got it sorted OP!!!

bluesapphire48 · 06/06/2022 18:53

Maggots aren't so bad. Sometimes doctors use maggots to debride dead tissue. As gross as it sounds, it is a respectable therapy for some medical problems.

Yes we know that ! However they are not common flies buzzing round eating dog shit and pissing in your cat food

They are sterile specially grown medical tools

ThistleTits · 06/06/2022 19:00

🤢🤢🤢 end up losing her toe or foot.

Bookloverjay · 06/06/2022 19:02

For those who liked the photo, go watch The Toe Bro on YouTube he is amazing at dealing with toes.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 06/06/2022 19:03

For Christ's sake why have you not got her medical attention before now? Her toes are now rotting.

Runmybathforme · 06/06/2022 19:06

BrownieBanana · 04/06/2022 21:19

Also, I've only ever heard of this happening in those with wounds linked to diabetes.

Flies can lay their eggs on any open wound, it only takes seconds to do it apparently.

Mamanyt · 05/06/2022 01:27

OK...DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVE AN EASILY UPSET STOMACH.

Those "fly eggs" are properly called maggots. While you may think nasty and disgusting, they do, in fact, feed on putrefying flesh, while leaving the healthy flesh untouched. This may have saved your daughter from the kind of infection that might well have led to amputating her feet. Thank the little guys, and GET HER TO A DOCTOR!!!

Those 'fly eggs' are in fact... fly eggs. From which will eventually hatch.. maggots.

Maggots of many species do indeed eat putrifying flesh, rotten veg, poo.. all sorts of things. However wild flies lay eggs that hatch into maggots that can pass on salmonella and e. coli.

So no, they haven't saved anything yet as they haven't hatched and no they aren't going to save anything either, just add more risk.

AmberMcAmber · 06/06/2022 19:27

F the haters - there’s only so much you can force a teen to do and this (for whatever reason) is his dad it needed to get for your DD

point is, she’s going to go now & hopefully in future she’ll take good care of herself & any open wound
