Daughter had flies eggs in her ingrowing toenail

That's it. She is 18 and has refused to have the toenails dealt with properly. They have been persistent for a couple of years on her big toes - both sides. Frequently they bled and we have been on and on at her, as they usually look foul.
Anyway, today she saw some little white grains on the toes and after taking a pic to blow the image up, we could see they were flies eggs!! I cannot get over the image in my mind.
I scraped them off and we soaked her feet in water with disinfectant. I can't help worrying that I didn't get them all out.
Obviously she is now going to go to the Dr about them.

Is this too grim a picture for Sporners corner?

Honestly, it takes a lot to shock me, but this thread is Shock

Op, are you a sporner?

RedPlumbob · 05/06/2022 02:49

Second sentence of second paragraph.

Daughter had flies eggs in her ingrowing toenail
CaramelChocolate · 05/06/2022 02:51

Thank you for that dear scientist

I am an a A&E doctor and your point is? @RedPlumbob
I have seen patients lose their toes and feet and die from sepsis.

Otherwise healthy 18 year olds? Or people with multiple underlying problems and much larger wounds? There have been but a handful of sepsis cases caused by ingrowing toe nails. Not difficult to track down the info.

CaramelChocolate · 05/06/2022 02:57

Sepsis caused by ingrowing toenails maybe

But through skin infections, Happens all the time

I dont wish to entertain you anymore @RedPlumbob

OP - As an A&E doctor i advise her to go to the hospital today! For urgent care

eggandchips34 · 05/06/2022 03:24

Jesus the absolute vitriol here over a manky toe, this thread is mental 🍿

Mummyoflittledragon · 05/06/2022 04:16

Crikey. Please get your dd to A&E. That looks incredibly painful!

Weirdlynormal · 05/06/2022 04:54

My sister is a wound specialist and maggots are not uncommon on wounds that are not being dealt with. These are maggots that she hasn’t introduced.

Libertybear80 · 05/06/2022 05:11

She may well have a fungal nail infection too. That would also cause the nail to curve and dig in. Multiple problems there. She needs medical attention.

OrlandointheWilderness · 05/06/2022 06:07

I'm only a student nurse but that looks like it needs seeing now rather than in the week. It looks at real risk of sepsis ( and yes I have seen an otherwise healthy 55 year old die from sepsis caused by a rose thorn scratch within the space of a week, it IS that serious). I'd be taking her in.

speakout · 05/06/2022 06:19

OP I hope your DD is seeking medical treatment today.
The colour of the toe is alarming- the blackening may indicate necrotic tissue, maggots only eat dead flesh.
At worst she may have the start of gangrene.
The fact that your DD is neglecting her self care is a worry- how does she manage the rest of her life?

Mumdiva99 · 05/06/2022 06:21

Your poor daughter. That looks so sore. Have a Google of The Toe Bro to see treatment of ingrowing nails. He's excellent....but in Canada. So find a local equivalent.

You’re as bad as each other.

Basketet · 05/06/2022 06:39

If your DD refuses to be seen, why haven't you at least called your GP surgery and ask if a GP can come to your house or put them on the phone for her to speak? If your DD is not seen ASAP there is real potential for her to lose her toe or foot.

This is negligent parenting.Sad

Bournetilly · 05/06/2022 06:56

If your daughter hasn’t already been to A&E please get her to go to A&E or the walk in centre. This should not be left until some point next week.
Id also be really worried about the fact she’s happy just to leave this until next week, I don’t think there’s many people who would be ok with having maggots in their wound (unless done intentionally for wound healing).

SmartCarDriver · 05/06/2022 07:08

So this could've been dealt with years ago, either by your daughter herself by using scissors, or seeing a podiatrist.

But she leaves it to this extent and now will need to seek a&e assistance.

Silly girl.

Your child is literally decaying. Be more proactive

Ha ha ha! Getting a gp to do a house call!! It would be easier to get the Queen to come!

Thank you so much for your kind and calm voice and advice.
This has brought her up sharp and focussed her in a way that my words never did, so she is going to make an appointment next week. A silver lining to the fly eggs..

Hello OP. As PP have said don’t wait until next week please. Please get some medical attention today as this is looking very serious for your daughter. It’s hard being any age dealing with medical issues but your daughter is probably feeling embarrassed ignoring this. It’s great you’re supporting her, please encourage her not to wait as her toe is in very serious condition.

You're hard pushed to get a phone appt these days , a GP home visit for an 18 year old won't happen!
