Mumsnetters share their stories of the most disastrous things to end up in the wash by mistake with Cushelle

This sponsored discussion is now closed. Thank you to everyone who shared their stories below.

We've all experienced that sinking feeling when you open the washing machine door and realise all is not as it should be, which is why Cushelle have created new Facial Tissues - designed to not fall apart in the wash. Beyond just a rogue tissue, Cushelle want to know - what's accidentally made it into your machine and ruined the whole load?

Here’s what Cushelle has to say: “Cushelle, the irresistibly cushiony soft toilet tissue brand, has launched facial tissues for colds, hay fever and messy kids! Cushelle Facial Tissues are soft, strong and also washing machine resistant, meaning they won’t break up in the wash if accidentally left in a pocket.”

Have you realised a phone or wallet was inside the machine when it was too late because of unemptied pockets? Or maybe you’ve followed cliche and accidentally washed a new red shirt along with the whites, leaving you embracing a new found love for pink? Whether it was some spare change, a felt tip pen, or your monthly train ticket that ended up in your wash, Cushelle want to hear your stories below.

All who share their stories on this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one lucky MNer will win a £300 voucher for a store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

For me, it was a rogue red sock that found its way into the white shirts boil wash. Nightmare. Had to buy new shirts.

(Almost) a cat. I put some washing in the machine, left the door open and went to fetch some more, cat jumps and settles down on the washing. I return and shove more washing in the machine, luckily I hear an indigent squeak and retrieve cat. Disaster narrowly averted.

In the wash at home a pair of Airpods which had been left in my gym trousers pleased to say the survived but I prayed alot while they dried out. On a cruise and just come back from a trip ashore seeing the laundry was empty rushed back with our washing and not checking the pockets discovered part way into the wash that my OH had left his door key and some notes in his shorts so had to stop the wash and rescue $100AS thank goodness for plastic money, but I now know what laundering money is all about.

My husband put several of his white work shirts in the washing machine - one of them had a black biro in the breast pocket. To add insult to injury, the pen broke and part of it worked its way out of the drum. New shirts and a new washing machine!!

A vape chuffer was the worst thing which ended up in the washing machine in a dressing gown pocket, thankfully it didn't ruin the washing!

Lego and stones, I just forget to check the kids pockets and they love to pick up stones to bring home and then forget all about them. The most annoying thing with the black wash is when a white tissue is left in a pocket, bits of white all over the washing.

An Indian throw turned everything pink LOL (never dreamed would run)

Another time; an Adult woollen jumper turned into a child's one by an accidental hot wash!!

2 x £20 notes left in a back pocket. Will always check pockets more thoroughly in future!

Daddy had a new pair of green shorts and we put them in the coloured wash, unfortunately everything went a greeny colour ruining everything, we had to through everything out as it was discoloured, we did try to get the coloring out first. The only good thing was we had to go on a clothes shopping spree at daddy's expense, daddy was not impressed & it was very expensive to say the least.
Now when new clothes are bought they get to washed on their own first to prevent it happening again.

I was rushing one morning when the youngest was very little and in my sleep deprived moment of insanity I popped the laundry detergent pod in the bin and the dirty nappy I'd brought through to pop in the wheelie bin out back into the washing machine .. didn't realise till hours late when I went to dry the clothes .. new washing machine was the only way to go haha!!

I just love peanuts, but have to ration my husband's access as he is a bit overweight. When he had found all my usual hiding places in the food cupboard, I decided to keep the peanuts - in their sealed foil packet in the washing machine.

This was okay for a couple of months, until the day I forgot they were there and put on a load of washing. The odd noise during the spin alerted me to the fact that something wasn't right...

The good news is that the foil bag hadn't burst.

The bad news is that all the salt had washed off or rubbed off and the peanuts just tasted really really odd.

I hide them in the bottom of the ironing basket now as that's safe and he's unlikely to ever spot them.

I washed my phone about 2 years ago as I put it on my bed then stripped my bedding off to wash and didn't realise I left it in the middle. I was so annoyed as I don't get a new phone that often and it was only about 4 months old.

A particularly strong, wrapped portion of goat's cheese. Pocketed by my husband during a meal in France with the intention of enjoying it later, then forgotten about... until we opened the washing machine at the holiday rental the following morning, to retrieve our clothes. Aside from the wrapping that had turned to sticky confetti, the smell had somehow survived the wash and transferred to all of the other garments Smile

My toddler likes to 'help' load and unload the machine. Just last week I hadn't noticed that her much loved 'taggie' hedgehog toy had been flung in when I wasnt looking. An hour she sat at the machine door distraught because she could see it spinning round and couldn't understand why we could get him out. Must be more careful in future!
