Mumsnetters share their stories of the most disastrous things to end up in the wash by mistake with Cushelle

This sponsored discussion is now closed. Thank you to everyone who shared their stories below.

We've all experienced that sinking feeling when you open the washing machine door and realise all is not as it should be, which is why Cushelle have created new Facial Tissues - designed to not fall apart in the wash. Beyond just a rogue tissue, Cushelle want to know - what's accidentally made it into your machine and ruined the whole load?

Here’s what Cushelle has to say: “Cushelle, the irresistibly cushiony soft toilet tissue brand, has launched facial tissues for colds, hay fever and messy kids! Cushelle Facial Tissues are soft, strong and also washing machine resistant, meaning they won’t break up in the wash if accidentally left in a pocket.”

Have you realised a phone or wallet was inside the machine when it was too late because of unemptied pockets? Or maybe you’ve followed cliche and accidentally washed a new red shirt along with the whites, leaving you embracing a new found love for pink? Whether it was some spare change, a felt tip pen, or your monthly train ticket that ended up in your wash, Cushelle want to hear your stories below.

All who share their stories on this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one lucky MNer will win a £300 voucher for a store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

Sports bra and jeans with whites laundry bleach

Special bits of baby clothes. I bought merino wool back from a trip of a lifetime to New Zealand and my mum knitted a gorgeous cardigan for my ds. Sadly I shrunk it to tiny doll size in the wash.
I bought my dd a special expensive pristine white baby gro that she wore once on the way home from hospital. My dh washed it with his new blue shirt and turned it a manky green colour. I was hormonal with a new baby but cried over that one!

I’ve washed my iPhone. It wasn’t in a pocket, I was holding it as I threw the load in. I’ve also washed a sanitary towel. Nice.

A beautiful pale pink cashmere cardigan that I'd planned to treasure for ever. Accidentally washed it at 60 and it came out small enough to fit DD's tiny tears doll.

A tissue when washing 3 pairs of black jeans (designer ones belonging to my teenage son) they came out looking they had been in a snowstorm - took a lot of sticky tape to pull off, ANOTHER wash and a good blow on the washing line.

Wax Crayons most definitely, in pockets, washed and then in tumble dryer..... eeeekkkk never seen such a mess.

LuckyPen · 25/02/2020 08:50

Ha the worst thing for me is tissues. I’m a tissue fiend and it really upsets my husband who’s a house spouse. I don’t blame him though picking off the white bits and rewashing is soooo frustrating

A marble, it must have been in a pocket, the noise it made was incredible and the final spin was terrifying! Had no idea what was going on, really though a major fault had happened to the machine, so was relieved when I opened the door to see a very clean, undamaged glass marble sitting on a sock.

A dishwasher pod capsule , instead of a washing pod capsule. This did nothing for the clothes, but the washing machine was very clean .

ThemisA · 25/02/2020 09:10

My one and only expensive dress, pure wool (dry clean or hand wash) it now fits a five year old! Tissues is a regular and they stick to everything and drive us all crazy

flowersfromheaven · 25/02/2020 09:18

My partner smokes and I have found his lighter a few times in with the washing, I am amazed that one as not blown up yet, ( He supposed to check his pockets).

maryandbuzz1 · 25/02/2020 09:19

We have had the same disaster as a previous comment mentioned..... a right orange duster which dyed everything in with it. We often seenu to wash a tissue which makes everything a mess.

snare · 25/02/2020 09:20

I washed my Fitbit - luckily it still worked!

happysouls · 25/02/2020 09:20

I'm probably pretty lucky that the worst thing is tissues! They take such a long time to get off everything but at least no permanent damage! Pockets are checked very carefully!

dajohnston10 · 25/02/2020 09:29

Leaving receipts in the pockets of trousers . Always ends up all over the clothes so always check them first !

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 25/02/2020 09:31

Tissues make such a mess.

paperbackfighter · 25/02/2020 09:35

The most disastrous thing was my friends little girls 'snuggly' She left it at my house and thinking I was being nice I stuck it in the wash. When she realised it was missing my friend was so relieved I had it until I told her it was drying....

In my defence, it was before I had kids and it definitely looked liked it needed a wash! Thankfully my own dc have never had a snuggly equivalent but I still feel a bit guilty for 'stealing its smell' Grin

otter099008 · 25/02/2020 09:36

A few years ago I put my brand new Google Pixel phone on a 90 degree whites hot wash by accident. I phoned up my contents insurance provider and they asked me to wait for the wash to finish (it was a 3 1/2 hour wash) and check if the phone was still working! Grin

fishonabicycle · 25/02/2020 09:36

A whole pack of butter with my son's football kit. It was never the same again.

youkiddingme · 25/02/2020 09:40

My favourite cashmere sweater, a gift for my daughter, put in the washer by my DH with his bedding. Sad

gaptoothuk · 25/02/2020 09:42

I always end up washing tissues with my laundry, absolute nightmare to get off clothes afterwards

footdust · 25/02/2020 09:42

Although I remind everyone regularly to check pockets before putting washing in the basket I stiill get tissues left in pockets - usually in a dark wash

kateandme · 25/02/2020 09:45
