Mumsnetters share their stories of the most disastrous things to end up in the wash by mistake with Cushelle

This sponsored discussion is now closed. Thank you to everyone who shared their stories below.

We've all experienced that sinking feeling when you open the washing machine door and realise all is not as it should be, which is why Cushelle have created new Facial Tissues - designed to not fall apart in the wash. Beyond just a rogue tissue, Cushelle want to know - what's accidentally made it into your machine and ruined the whole load?

Here’s what Cushelle has to say: “Cushelle, the irresistibly cushiony soft toilet tissue brand, has launched facial tissues for colds, hay fever and messy kids! Cushelle Facial Tissues are soft, strong and also washing machine resistant, meaning they won’t break up in the wash if accidentally left in a pocket.”

Have you realised a phone or wallet was inside the machine when it was too late because of unemptied pockets? Or maybe you’ve followed cliche and accidentally washed a new red shirt along with the whites, leaving you embracing a new found love for pink? Whether it was some spare change, a felt tip pen, or your monthly train ticket that ended up in your wash, Cushelle want to hear your stories below.

All who share their stories on this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one lucky MNer will win a £300 voucher for a store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

My passport!

GoldenCrunchMunch · 24/02/2020 16:40

I took a very clean very flat crisp packet out last week (toddler can't differentiate between laundry basket and bin)

Beautiful handknitted baby shawl that got thrown into a hot wash with a load of baby bedding by mistake after being worn once by the baby. Came out the size of a handkerchief. Sob.

My son's red slipper in a boil wash of cloth nappies.

ToftheB · 24/02/2020 17:31

My kindle e reader (it was fine after a good dry in the sun) and, on s different occasion, a disposable nappy (not fine, gel everywhere and I don't think the washing machine was ever the same again)

fishnships · 24/02/2020 18:06

Paper tissues in pockets - expecting my family to always empty their pockets was a bit optimistic.

YesThisIsMe · 24/02/2020 18:20

DH’s vintage Windows mobile phone which he left in his jeans pocket. It was his pride and joy, and he’d always said it was indestructible. Turns out it wasn’t Sad

SecretNutellaFix · 24/02/2020 19:18

I have managed to wash my mobile phone. And it was full of photo's I lost. :( However, since then I make sure I can actually see my phone while I'm sticking the wash in.

I have also managed to wash a hairball from the cat. He used to sleep in the laundry basket and must have brought one up and I just loaded the dirty washing in. It stayed whole! Which I was very grateful for.

MrsFrTedCrilly · 24/02/2020 19:28

It’s a definite toss up between my favourite wool jumper in a towel wash, towels ruined jumper would fit the cat...I was very sad.
Or a disposable nappy, the gel stuff went everywhere it took ages to sort it out.

Beautiful Grey/blue cashmere wrap over stomach that disguised my protruding belly of shame ... now fits my 6 yr old niece ...(who has no b-o-s btw just gorgeous-ness...

sharond101 · 24/02/2020 20:01

A full nappy!

Spartonian · 24/02/2020 21:08

Unfortunately mine was my much loved grandmothers cashmere cardigan. I was very close to her before she died and I wanted something of hers to cuddle occasionally.
Somehow it ended up in the wash with normal everyday clothing items and then went through the tumble dryer. It was ruined, over 10 years later, I do still have it as I can't bring myself to throw it away but never managed to get it back to cuddly again.

ifigoup · 24/02/2020 21:14

A biro on a hot wash. I have done disposable nappies, tissues, and a bus pass too.

Aquicknamechange2019 · 24/02/2020 21:16

@buzzshitbagbobbly you can't flush any wipes at all, only toilet paper

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 24/02/2020 21:22

I'm well aware of that. These are described as tissues though, hence my question.

Spartonian · 24/02/2020 21:25

On a lighter note, I have ended up with a crayon in the tumble dryer, quite a few items of clothing got binned that day and I had to re melt the harden crayon in order to clean it out of the dryer.

Have also had a stray disposable nappy in the washing machine, £10 note, a mobile phone, plenty of screws, loose change and the dreaded tissue. Mine have been spread out over the last 25 years of doing washing, not all in one day.

Sausagis · 24/02/2020 21:32

MIL tumble dried the cat (sorry montydoo !) but don't know if tales of tumble driers count? Cat survived and lived to a massive old age.

I managed to throw away a beautiful new cloth nappy, only worn once, so I seem to be the opposite of washing things I should bin, and instead bin things I should wash Blush

frankie001 · 24/02/2020 22:17

I’m a nurse and have washed more pen torches, scissors, tape and Id badges than I Care to admit!

Pegase · 24/02/2020 22:21

Crayons in my daughter's pocket. There are random wax splodges all over so many of my clothes and they absolutely do not come out ever again!

cannotmakemymindup · 24/02/2020 22:23

A top that most definitely couldn't be washed in a washing machine. Didn't realise until afterwards when it just became a large odd mishapen furry object. Took ages to figure out what on earth I put in the washing machine that could turn out like that. So bizarre and annoying.

MusicTeacherSussex · 24/02/2020 22:31

My brand new forest green polo neck jumper. It was cute, but even cuter when it came out sized for barbie Hmm

Thanks, well meaning boyfriend

buckley1983 · 24/02/2020 22:50

I've been pretty lucky with foreign items in the washing machine - only the odd tissue so far which is incredibly annoying, but salvageable with some elbow grease & a quality lint roller..
What wasn't salvagable however was the beautiful Merino wool jumper I got for a bargainous £6.00 in a charity shop - threw it in the laundry bin, forgot it was in there - lumped it in with the usual wash, & yes, would only fit a toddler thereafter.. oh how I wept & oh how I wished I wasn't quite so smug when I purchased it!!

buize · 25/02/2020 00:07

It has to be tissues that break up and leave bits of white fluff on everything. Takes several washes to get out of black clothing.

ellabella1998 · 25/02/2020 00:48

I think by far one of the most distressing days of my life was when I washed my m&s cashmere two piece with my iPhone in the pocket . Was so busy cleaning didn't realise . Was distraught when I realised the two peice had shrunk to the size of something a child would wear only to notice my phone in the washing machine baffled as to how it got their . Really unlucky day

OnTheEdgeOfTheNight · 25/02/2020 01:00

A wooden toddler toy. (The type with stacking rings, if anyone's interested.) I knew that my son was really fond of the washing machine, but I didn't realise that he'd put a favourite toy in it until the machine was off and running, and I heard a massive banging, clunking noise. Thankfully I could drain the machine rather than waiting two hours for the cycle to finish. It was a bit scary though before I realised what was causing the noise, as it sounded like the world was coming to an end.
