Mumsnetters share their stories of the most disastrous things to end up in the wash by mistake with Cushelle

This sponsored discussion is now closed. Thank you to everyone who shared their stories below.

We've all experienced that sinking feeling when you open the washing machine door and realise all is not as it should be, which is why Cushelle have created new Facial Tissues - designed to not fall apart in the wash. Beyond just a rogue tissue, Cushelle want to know - what's accidentally made it into your machine and ruined the whole load?

Here’s what Cushelle has to say: “Cushelle, the irresistibly cushiony soft toilet tissue brand, has launched facial tissues for colds, hay fever and messy kids! Cushelle Facial Tissues are soft, strong and also washing machine resistant, meaning they won’t break up in the wash if accidentally left in a pocket.”

Have you realised a phone or wallet was inside the machine when it was too late because of unemptied pockets? Or maybe you’ve followed cliche and accidentally washed a new red shirt along with the whites, leaving you embracing a new found love for pink? Whether it was some spare change, a felt tip pen, or your monthly train ticket that ended up in your wash, Cushelle want to hear your stories below.

All who share their stories on this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one lucky MNer will win a £300 voucher for a store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

A cigarette lighter, a Camembert (don’t ask) and a laptop mouse (which still worked once it had dried out)

Bloody Kirby grips! I had them in my jeans pocket, completely wrecked the washing machine. A pretty expensive error!

any answers on degradability of this stuff? Semi-indestructible tissue really isn't a good idea.

mclarkie · 13/03/2020 11:13

I left my leather wallet in my jeans once on a long wash...ruined

Jam291 · 13/03/2020 20:11

... two words ... play-doh!!

DOH!!!

DS spent weeks designing and making a 3d printed USB stick at school. He was really proud of it. I felt awful when I found it in the washing machine after doing a 60°C load. Thankfully, once dried out it still worked fine and still works a year later.

I've washed nappies a couple of times and discovered that a hot wash with loads of salt in it will dissolve all the gel well. Still a PITA though!

A wool jumper belonging to DH. It would have been a perfect fit for my 2 year old, except weirdly the arms didn't shrink. Confused

Thank you to all the posters. You have made me smile with all your disasters but have made me feel rather boring as the only thing to spoil my washing is the loo roll which always seems to escape detection when I check pockets, sleeves etc! grrr!

jdmattinson · 15/03/2020 23:43

The worst thing I've put in the washing machine is a pair of pants with money in one of the pockets. It was definitely a sad day 😭💩.

blimby · 16/03/2020 04:49

Had some earbuds in a pocket that had a nice wash. Much to my surprise, they still worked afterwards!

sez101 · 16/03/2020 07:14

Post Night shift clothes went into the fridge cereal, bowl and spoon went into the wash, went to bed. Needless to say the bowl was broken, my clothes covered in cereal and i woke up hungry

Lindseymorris29 · 16/03/2020 07:36

Changing the bedding, gathered the sheets. Put them in the washer, and turned it on! In the meantime needed my phone, called its number if I remember correctly it didn't ring. I just knew...... stopped the machine, found the phone googled what to do, found put it in rice. RIP phone, it was only a couple of weeks old. So now before my washer is turned on, I make sure i can see my phone. Once bitten twice shy.

I really hate tissues in pockets. I have trice washed cardigans with tissues in the pocket and it is such a pain to get all of the remnants off!

angiehoggett · 16/03/2020 08:37

I'd just bought my husband a lovely jumper that ended up going on a wash that was far too hot for it and it shrunk. I was guttered as it was so nice , I tried to stretch it back into shape but it never looked the same!

Bellroyd · 16/03/2020 08:50

I remember once deciding that my husband's dressing gown needed a wash. What I didn't realise was that he had left his wrist watch in one of the side pockets.

Remarkably at the end of the cycle, it transpired that the watch was still working! I put it back on his bedside table. Sadly, it only lasted for a month or so after that before it stopped altogether. Have I ever admitted what I had done! Well, not until now! ( He won't see this) (I hope)

essexchic · 16/03/2020 10:14

The worst thing is tissues in pockets, my husband is the worse!

littlemonkeyz · 16/03/2020 10:24

My husband's wallet which actually came out fully intact although the business cards inside had mushed into a million little bits all over the darks wash!

angela121262 · 16/03/2020 13:21

A red sock in the whites dyed all my white towels pink

HopeYouStepOnALego · 16/03/2020 13:25

My car remote. I have touch start technology in the car and the remote was ruined so had to pay an absolute fortune for a new one and to have it programmed to the car.

phillw · 16/03/2020 23:31

I left my mobile phone in a pocket in my work trousers and put them into the washing machine. I only realised after I heard a banging coming from the machine.
