Gaviscon advance works by forming a protective barrier on top of the stomach contents which helps prevent the acid rising into your food pipe.
Medicines can affect the unborn baby. Always talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking any medicine in pregnancy.

Try and avoid food and drinks that may trigger heartburn. Spicy foods such as curry shoud be avoided and acidic drinks like alcohol and orange juice. Make a note of any personal triggers and also try to avoid. Take omeprazole as prescribed if advised by your doctor. Take Gaviscon or peptac after meals and before bed. Try to sleep in a more upright position to ease any heartburn that does occur

I now get heartburn since having gall bladder removed - used to be able to eat on the go then rush around e.g cup of tea/breakfast standing in kitchen, sort children out, bend down to fridge, load dishwasher, jump in car, but find I can’t do this anymore and have to slow down after eating, being especially careful about bending down. Finding this most frustrating!

Sleeping in a more upright position helps. Reduction in acidic foods/wine. Gaviscon liquid or tablets work great

I have a glass of milk if I don't have any gaviscon at hand. When I was pregnant I had to take ranitidine as I had such terrible heartburn it gave me a cough that would make me sick. It was shit. Gaviscon tablets were great once the hyperemesis had calmed down enough for me to tolerate the taste. The liquid was vile. I couldn't drink it. I still can't. It's like drinking cold phlegm. I hated the taste of mint when I was pregnant so the tablets were hard work too. Please make a strawberry or orange flavoured one as this would have made my life so much easier during pregnancy. The dual action ones are the best. The effect of the regular ones doesn't last as long.

Eating smaller but more frequent meals helps, not eating late at night & also avoid spicy food.

Nikita90 · 02/11/2019 09:42

Avoid rich foods or pastry. Also Gaviscon helped me lots!! I found propping myself with a pillow helped too.

Following on from my previous post; I bought some Gaviscon Dual Action yesterday. Took two tablets before turning off the light last night. Felt ok, maybe a tiny twinge of acid at first, but that soon settled. Woke at 3.15 with heartburn. So it does work, but not for long enough for me to bother to keep buying it, otherwise I'd be spending a fortune on the stuff, as it's much too expensive to buy of I need 4+ tablets per day. Sorry.

For me, no simple carbs, and drinking almond milk helps

Byrdie · 02/11/2019 22:11

I had this with 2 pregnancies. I was trying to be medicine free so wouldn't take anything (especially when pregnant the first time) and found the only thing that helped was a jam scone with cream and class of milk!

Leanfun · 03/11/2019 11:09

Leave plenty of time between eating and going to bed at night.

kats56 · 03/11/2019 16:15

Raise your bed up about 4 inches by putting something under the legs or base. Also apple cider vinegar is good taken in water before meals.

Borderkitt · 03/11/2019 17:19

I glass of milk always works for me

Juloof · 04/11/2019 09:16

Minimize fats: Fatty foods take longer to digest, which means they’re more likely to result in an episode of reflux.
Watch your portions: Eat slowly, chew completely, and stop as you begin to feel full – not when you feel so stuffed you cannot move.

WombleishofTheThighs · 04/11/2019 09:32

Juloof, fat is not a problem for everyone. It's carbs that give me heartburn, especially sugar.

sallyann123 · 04/11/2019 14:18

I find the best thing for heartburn apart from Gaviscon is to stand up straight as possible and chew gum to help with the acid! Also elevating your upper body also helps

DrCraig · 04/11/2019 18:57

A whisky mac works for me every time! and that's from a real DR!

theAntsareMyFriends · 12/11/2019 12:21

I'm 7 month pregnant so get it every evening. I take indigestions tablets before dinner rather than waiting to get it and then take them. Also, eating regularly helps.

I have cheap tablets for everyday and use Gaviscon for my extra indigestiony days.
