Babies and toddlers are often curious about everything they can get their hands on, making the process of childproofing a rite of passage for most parents. Fairy Non Bio would like to hear your tips for childproofing your home.

Here’s what Fairy Non Bio has to say: “Cleaning products are easily found by little explorers and it is our passion to keep all children safe. We have designed new child lock pack systems for our 3in1 PODs to make it difficult for them to get into, but we still want to spread the word to click close the lid and store up high. We want to know what else could help keep kids safe!”

Do you find it best to have stair gates in the doorway to every room? Do you have an alternative for once your child works out how to use your cupboard locks? Perhaps you know a way to get corner guards to stay on your tables even though your child attempts to pull them off? Whatever your childproofing tips, we’d love to hear them.

All who share their tips for childproofing below will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher for the store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck

Chemicals/cleaning supplies and medicines out of reach and completely out of the way in a high cupboard

purpleclaire · 08/06/2019 17:37

I always had stairgates and cushioned protectors on the corners of my coffee table, when my children were younger. I've always kept medicines and tablets out of reach - still do. Now I will need to look at the best kind of parental controls for the internet.

Do everything! Including the bin lid!

juicylucywb · 08/06/2019 18:23

We have no door on our kitchen so a baby gate is a necessity. We also have a lock on the door under the kitchen cupboard, where all the cleaning stuff is kept. I don't really believe in locks on the other cupboards. We keep unbreakable stuff in the ones my daughter can reach, and I don't mind her getting all the tupperware out! All medications are locked away in a high cabinet.

Keep plug sockets covered up, bolt heavy items of furniture to the wall and invest in good stair gates!

Cailin7 · 08/06/2019 20:02

we do not use pods, we use fairy powder. When our DCs were younger we had a lock on the cupboard with the cleaning supplies. we had a gate on the stairs, safety hinges on the windows and locks, and constant supervision.

freefan · 08/06/2019 20:06

We done all the usual like moving cleaning products into a higher cupboard, corner protectors, hiding cables out of sight and stair gates but found the easiest was adapting the rooms to be baby/toddler friendly and keeping a close eye on what they are doing is the most important.

We never did much - and now they’re 5 and 2.5 a lot of the baby proofing has gone. We’ve still got bed guards on, and I keep the door to the utility room closed. But other than that, we’ve just supervised and taught them to stay away from the things we don’t want them messing with.

twinklenicci · 08/06/2019 20:17

the only items i have ever used were stair gates and socket covers . ive been lucky to not really need anything else

biffyboom · 08/06/2019 20:48

Stair gate on the kitchen, and all hazardous items locked away in the utility.
Also, the children have accessible cupboards at floor level in the kitchen with their own items like cups & plates and a snack cupboard, so aim straight for those when they are in the kitchen, and have no interest in the 'boring' adult cupboards.

We've had to put a fire guard around the tv unit to try and keep little hands out of the electronics as well as the usual stair gates. Also one on the kitchen door which is a god send, just a pain in the neck when it take me a minute to open the latch to get in and out.

sophiefx · 08/06/2019 21:02

Baby gates and locks on all the cupboards!

BlueBoy1969 · 08/06/2019 21:08

YOu have to have eyes everywhere !
We have had to take quite a few things off the floor, ornaments etc. Fire guard and stair gates are a must.

BlueBoy1969 · 08/06/2019 21:11

Teeth routine - I have to watch them in the mornings and evenings to make sure they clean their teeth properly. I want them to learn from my mistakes, Ive even shown them photos of rotten teeth on the internet to try and keep them focused.

Nikita90 · 08/06/2019 21:19

I have safety gates around the house to prevent the toddler escaping! I also have locks on all my cupboards so she can't get hold of anything potentially dangerous. I also push everything to the backs of our kitchen counter as she loves to try and reach things on her tippy toes.

BringItIn · 08/06/2019 21:27

Keep recycling out of reach - don't leave tin cans or glass jars on the draining board or in boxes on the floor where little hands can get to them. It only takes a moment for something to be grabbed and cause an injury.

lhlee62 · 08/06/2019 22:22

I put a stair gate at the bottom of the stairs and we had a room divider which doubled as a play pen. We used it to surround the Christmas tree and little people kept taking the ornaments off.

frances93 · 09/06/2019 07:01

We have a stairgate on the lounge door and one on the kitchen door, as 3 big dogs running around and 1 little person doesnt go well. Door stoppers are a life saver since DD1 learnt how to open and shut doors, trapped fingers are something we can live without.

jackn86 · 09/06/2019 07:41

We found child locks on cupboards very useful - she always seems to go for the under sink cupboard as is intrigued by the cleaning products!

Dangerous things in high cupboards and a baby gate on the stairs

mollymoo818 · 09/06/2019 08:28

Trying to child proof a home was a total nightmare. Even though we thought we had done everything we could with our first to child proof everything she still managed to get into things. We were much more relaxed with our second and other than locks on the cupboards with the more dangerous things in them and a stair gate we didn't go as mad with trying to proof everything against them as we thought it was better to try and teach them instead.

phillie1 · 09/06/2019 08:52

Apart from a stairgate didnt do anything else.

dadshere · 09/06/2019 09:36

When we moved into our new house, we did a 'walk-around' to see any possible issues, such as chemicals in lower cupboards etc. Then we made sure that chemicals were not accessible, doors wouldn't slam on fingers and edges were all guarded.

Catmadroo · 09/06/2019 11:10

I had cleaning items out of reach, or in a child locked cupboard, stairgates top and bottom of stairs and safety things for cords on blinds, as i had read a truely sad story of a baby getting tangled and strangling in one

MrRichTea · 09/06/2019 11:33

Put things up high! lol
