Babies and toddlers are often curious about everything they can get their hands on, making the process of childproofing a rite of passage for most parents. Fairy Non Bio would like to hear your tips for childproofing your home.

Here’s what Fairy Non Bio has to say: “Cleaning products are easily found by little explorers and it is our passion to keep all children safe. We have designed new child lock pack systems for our 3in1 PODs to make it difficult for them to get into, but we still want to spread the word to click close the lid and store up high. We want to know what else could help keep kids safe!”

Do you find it best to have stair gates in the doorway to every room? Do you have an alternative for once your child works out how to use your cupboard locks? Perhaps you know a way to get corner guards to stay on your tables even though your child attempts to pull them off? Whatever your childproofing tips, we’d love to hear them.

All who share their tips for childproofing below will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher for the store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck

We didn't actually child proof our flat, if it had been a house, we would have got stair gates.

WarmHugs · 06/06/2019 13:41

Something that a lot of people forget is blinds cords. It’s all well and good people saying they don’t need to child proof, or they just teach their DC “no” Accidents can, and do, happen. Secure those blinds cords to the wall so DC can’t get tangled and strangled in them.

We tied string elaborately between all around the 4 drawer chest of drawer knobs after DS pulled them out and use them as steps to climb up onto the top.

Cupboard locks and a stair gate are the first things and I reorganised the kitchen so that even when the cupboards are open they don't have access to anything dangerous. My youngest would be happy in my plastic tub cupboard for hours thinking he had been sneaky when it had been deliberate on my part. I moved glass off reachable places and boxed it away, we checked all our blind cords were safe along with windows.

Baby gates at the top & bottom of the stairs.
Socket covers on unused plug sockets.
Corner protectors on the corners at child head height.
Locks on the cupboard storing cleaning stuff.
Medicines etc kept up high out of reach.

With DS1 I really panicked and bought stair gates, clips for the DVD player, oven clips, plug socket covers, table corner guards etc. I read horror stories about the plug socket covers, couldn't be arsed with the DVD player thing and forgot about the table corner guards. I then stuck a safety gate on the kitchen so he couldn't get in when I was cooking.

With DS2 we shoved up the safety gates at the top and bottom of the stairs and on the kitchen.

The major thing I had to do was build a bannister across the split level dining room to stop him running off a two foot drop!

Smilingsophie85 · 06/06/2019 21:27

We have stair gates on every level and door locks on all kitchen doors.

PickledChicory · 07/06/2019 12:45

We do have a stair gate but thats been more useful for the dogs.
I think like lots of people have said I dont have much official child proofing or specific products. Its been a case of keeping really dangerous stuff out of reach and sight and making sure the dc are aware of dangers eg why we dont play with the hot tap.

Stair gates were a must in our house! Top and bottom of stairs only though. Then everything was just stored higher up and any furniture strapped to the walls! We had a climber!

Blazedout · 07/06/2019 17:27

My main thing is to ensure all furniture that can be pulled over is attached to the wall so little climbers don't get squashed or trapped.

Out house was pretty much bomb proofed with DS2! He’s being assessed for asd, and as a toddler (even now as a 5yo) has no fear/concept of danger. We had stair gates on sitting room and kitchen doors, so I could cook without fear of having a tiny tornado wipe me out while I was draining the spuds.
The front door has been on the chain since he could walk - he sussed out the lock pretty quickly!
Anything remotely pointy or dangerous is kept well out of reach.
All heavy furniture fastened to the walls - he always liked to climb, and although that’s calmed down now, he still climbs up his mid sleeper bed which is firmly anchored to the wall!
Biscuits and other nice looking foods are kept in his reach, since he’d climb to get them and we’ve had far more joy getting him to ask before taking than stopping him climbing to reach them.
Any blinds with cords have a thing on the wall, right at the top of the window so we keep the cords wrapped round it well out of his reach.

He sounds like a right liability, but he can honestly find the danger in anything!

Stairgates on stairs & fridge locks - everything has to be up high as well or the little blighters will knock it all off!!

purplepandas · 07/06/2019 22:49

Stairgates and playpens were useful for us. Table corner covers too.

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 08/06/2019 01:02

I used child locks on all the kitchen cupboards.

My DM had to do all of hers aswell as DS was a nightmare for getting into cupboards.

He was in a bed before he was 1 as he kept climbing out of the cot, used a bund of cushions alongside in case of falling out

Stair gates top and bottom.

ricola1 · 08/06/2019 07:36

Cushions. Safety barrier on bed. Plug socket cases

ricola1 · 08/06/2019 07:37

Use electric toothbrush

AR2012 · 08/06/2019 07:52

Child locks a stair gate and supervision

MrsGrannyWeatherwax · 08/06/2019 07:57

Stair gates only so far, but think I’ll need to do more as baby is extremely interested in everything ....

RACHELSMITH45 · 08/06/2019 08:02

We have safety gates top and bottom of the stairs, child locks on cupboards and drawers and keep anything hazardous in high cupboard in the kitchen.

Lovemykidssomuch · 08/06/2019 08:18

I have a stair gate at the top of the stairs as it is steep and lock bathroom door as the kids like to go in and waste our toiletries but other than that, as a parent it is my care and duty to teach them about hazards. I also keep cleaning products high on my fridge.

christinelucey · 08/06/2019 08:31

We have childproof locks on our windows stair gates child locks on cupboards and safety locks on our roller blinds

jacqui5366 · 08/06/2019 08:31

stair gates -top and bottom, cupboard locks, anti door slammers and cushioned table corners.

ohdannyboy · 08/06/2019 08:36

I have cupboard locks, but keep bleach and cleaning products on high shelves, child proof safety gates, to the kitchen and at the bottom and top of the stairs, a thermometer at the side of the bath.

DonkeyHohtay · 08/06/2019 08:38

We didn't have any locks or catches on drawers, but just thought about where we put things - cleaning products were up high, not at toddler lever.
