NOW CLOSED

Sometimes the thought of rain or heavy wind on a day out can make us want to stay indoors and curl up with a film. But, if bad weather catches you by surprise it might even turn your day out into an adventure. Arla Big Milk would like to hear about the adventures you’ve had because of bad weather.

Here’s what Arla Big Milk has to say: “We know how important it is to get your little explorers out in the world around them, so we’ve partnered with Magic Light to bring you yearlong BIG Adventures. We’re also running an on pack monthly prize draw, available across UK grocery retailers, to give you the chance to win an amazing trip to Chessington World of Adventures Resort. Helping to fuel these BIG Adventures, Arla Big Milk is simply fresh whole milk that’s enriched with essential nutrients. So, if you want to join in on the adventure rain or shine, come visit our site to explore activities for your half term.”

Have you raced to find shelter in the woods when you’ve encountered an unexpected downpour? Perhaps you’ve embraced the rain and gone puddle jumping with your children? Maybe you’ve seen a new side to nature when you’ve been out in the wind and rain? Share below to be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher for the store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

We used to have a camper van and took the boys to Fairport's Cropredy Convention music festival every year. One year it rained for the whole weekend and the awning extension leaked where a couple of us were sleeping. We had a huge piece of plastic to sit on whilst listening to the music and another to hold over the top of us. We had fun in between showers at the stalls and activities, but we had to wear full waterproofs for the whole weekend.

We’ve been lucky enough to have a few “snow days” this year where we have all been able to enjoy an impromptu day off. Something about snow always makes us spend more time together having fun, rather than looking at screens. We went to the woods and had a great time sledging then came home and got warmed up with hot chocolate in front of the fire. It was a pretty idyllic break from the usual routine and a normal Thursday of rushing about and often falling out. We remembered that we do enjoy being together as a family!

Took my nephew to lunar festival in the middle of the heatwave last year. The only weekend of the year we had booked something in advance and after a roasting hot Friday, we had catastrophic thunder and rain for the remainder of the weekend so spent most of it splashing in puddles rather than watching bands, had to buy him a plastic Mac but fortunately took his wellies with us! We look back and laugh now!

If we've taught our DC anything, it's that life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass, it's about learning to dance in the rain

We once went on holiday to the Isle of Wight in August (we assumed we would have had reasonably nice weather...) - it poured down for 6 out of 7 days. Everything we had to wear was saturated, the rain and mud was sliding down the hillsides and eventually the tent blew off it's pegs. It was a real adventure but one we haven't brought ourselves back to do again...

We were sunbathing on a rented boat in Lake Garda and diving in the lake to cool off when we got a phone call from the boat owners to return ASAP as a storm was coming. We sailed back in and ran as fast as we could back to our mobile home when the thunder and lightning started and it started hailstoning ice balls the size of golf balls! It was a crazy storm and amazing that we didn't get caught in it on the lake! Felt v lucky!

Once we were at a local country park in the summer when there was an absolute downpour! We were near a den building part so rushed inside one of them to take shelter and wait for the worst to pass. The kids still talk about it now!

jo4chelsea · 19/02/2019 22:32

when we went on holiday to Butlins a few years ago despite it being summer it absolutely poured down to the point we physically couldn't go anywhere so we decided to go play in the rain and puddles once it had calmed down. The kids have never forgotten this day and to be fair it was a highlight of the whole holiday!

We were on our way the Gower in South Wales for our first ever camping weekend. It rained and rained and rained during the journey. "Should we just stop here?" Says me, "no, it'll be fine" from DH. Approximately 15 minutes later we (he) had driven into a flash flood and the car (diesel) stopped. Water started coming into the foot wells so we jumped out and pushed it out. However the engine was completely dead... called the RAC but the Police has closed the roads due to flooding do they couldn't get to us.

Eventually a Policeman came and arranged for a recovery truck, he couldn't get us through to the campsite so turned round to take us into Swansea. On the way he was stopped by the same Policeman who needed him to go and collect another car and instead he would take us into Swansea in his police car (4x4). The policeman dropped us outside a hotel and off he went. We went in to discover they were fully booked, it was past midnight and Bank holiday weekend. We walked to another hotel, also full although their receptionist phoned round for us to try and find a room, all full... the last option was to try the very posh hotel over the road that he didn't have a number for.

We walked over, like drowned rats, knocked the door and the nicest night porter ever (a knight in shining armour), ushered us in, no problem, he had a room for us and because we'd missed half the night he would do it at half price! We stayed in the most gorgeous hotel with a fab Welsh breakfast in the morning for an absolute steal.

Car was a write off though...

Dermoid cyst?
Hi,
I’m new to this site and have seen some older posts in here about dermoid cysts.
I had a recent ultrasound which suspects s large dermoid cyst.
I have to have an MRI and further blood tests to confirm and then await surgery.
I’m so worried in case it isn’t a dermoid and something more sinister.
Has anyone got any experience of this?

Theimpossiblegirl · 20/02/2019 09:59

Hi Frenchy and welcome. Try posting in the health topic. You'll get advice there. Xx

My toddler son absolutely loves puddles. We’ve all learned the pleasure of splashing through water as a result of watching his total joy at jumping and splashing. We now regularly head to the park in the rain and find ourselves able to play on all the equipment alone, no waiting to take it in turns to drive the toy train. Also going down a wet slide is way more fun than a dry one!

I took my children on a day trip to Brownsea Island in Poole Harbour and we arrived to sunny skies but the weather turned stormy and there were some really heavy showers, because the area is associated with pirates we turned it into an escape adventure having to hide in the woods during downpours and looking and listening out for any 'Pirate' noises, the children loved it as normally they'd spend the day eating the entire contents of the picnic bag and playing on one of the islands beaches but this particular day we had to find something to do which didn't involve sitting on the ground, they even found the slightly choppy boat ride back to the mainland exciting( certainly a lot more so than me!! Confused )

I can remember a day trip in the summerr holidays to Broadstairs Journey down was great weather but once as we drove into the town the clouds came as did the rain. Our three were insistant to go on the beach. They dug out wellingtons and rain coats from the back of the car and off they went. They had the whole beach to themselves. They had great fun and said it was their best ever trip there.

MummyBtothree · 20/02/2019 17:04

Out for a day at the zoo and it started to rain - heavily. It never let up so we just thought 'what the heck' and carried on walking round. We were soaked to the bone but my youngest DS enjoyed being able to jump in the puddles.

Jeffingandeffing · 20/02/2019 19:08

Family holidays in Cornwall were always a mixed bag of weather. When our son was little, he would carry a small plastic boat on a string around with him ready to ‘sail’ in every puddle on our walks.

Bumblebeesmum · 20/02/2019 19:42

Our holiday last summer was a particularly miserable few days in Devon. There is only so much time you can spend cooped up with two small children playing endless games of jenga & so we agreed to go to the beach in spite of the weather.
Getting on to the beach & feeling the strength of the wind was a bit of a shock and it was also quite apparent we were the only tools foolish enough to be there, but we persevered. I tucked our things including a pram full of gear in to a little sheltered cove where the children could paddle and dig.

We weren’t there for very long when my six year old excitedly shouted that the sea was getting bigger. I realised the tide had very much come in and getting out was not looking quite as simple as it had been to get in.

We ran across the beach with my 6 year old screaming “this is amazing, this is amazing” and my 4 year old shouting “we are mermaids” & we climbed up the hill side of the beach. Unfortunately the pram had other ideas and as I was pushing the children over the top I realised the pram was heading back down. I chased after the pram with my children (mortifyingly) cheering me on. Luckily I retrieved the pram & dragged it to safety.

I would not count it as my favourite experiences but my children found the whole thing hugely exciting & were thrilled to tell the class how their holiday involved “Mummy trying to drown us”.

Just for the record there was no risk of actual death - just getting wet !

I’ve found pictures of that beautiful summer’s day Grin

Staying at my uncles in the country with the dc and playing hide and seek in his garden when a huge downpour sent us scurrying inside for coats and umbrellas.

We found them in the back of an old wardrobe and when Dd decided to explore further she found that there were trees in there too!

We all had a look and found ourselves in a magical land covered in snow! There were fawns, beavers and even an ice queen living there. We had hot chocolate and Turkish delight before coming back home.

Super day out!

Nikita90 · 20/02/2019 20:39

We went for a family walk at beacon fell when there was a heavy downpour! we stayed under the canopy of the trees and built a little den! it was great fun!

One Easter Me my partner and 2 children we went down to Skegness for a weeks stay in a caravan, it was one of the wettest weeks I have ever had away, my eldest son was bored so we went walking along the sea front it was blowing a gale as well as Thundering and lightening (which my son loves watching) the waves was lapping right up to the edge of the wall we just stood watching the waves with many more people It was a brilliant sight, That was Mother nature at it's best.

farhanac · 21/02/2019 00:59

Headed to the beach while on holiday, only for rain and thunder to send everyone ducking for cover into a tiny beach cafe. Made for a great fiesta atmosphere, wonderful food and fond memories.

apparentlyso · 21/02/2019 00:59

My family and I were on a trip to the west coast of Scotland, decided to go horse riding on the beautiful local beach in a few days time (we had checked the weather forecast and all was well).
The day arrived and of course the weather was horrific!
We had to borrow wet weather gear from the stables (completely ill-fitting) suffered the 2 hour ride as it was expensive and offered no refunds and was supposed to be one of the highlights of the holiday.
Could hardly see through the icey rain and it wasn't pleasurable in any way, but we spent the whole time laughing at the ridiculousness of it all (esp as a few family members lied exaggerated about how experienced they were at riding and some of them were terrified at times Grin as the better riders wanted to canter/gallop).
One of my favourite family memories!
The weather made it so awful it was brilliant.

My Daughter-in-law had found out she was pregnant, for her first child , just before my Daughters wedding, she was to be her Bridesmaid. The day before the wedding it started to snow, fearing we might not get there we started out early to our destination as it was to take place 50 miles from where we lived. The snow got heavier and heavier but we just about managed to get to our destination. My Daughter was about to get married in the beast from the east, many people couldn't make it to the wedding, but in August later that year, our twins Jack and Elliott were born, which was another scary story.

vixxx666 · 21/02/2019 11:08

For my son's birthday we went to a local nature reserve. It rained the entire time we were out so we turned it into a puddle splashing adventure and built a den to sit in and eat ice cream.
