NOW CLOSED

Unicef UK are launching this years Soccer Aid Playground Challenge and would love to hear about the playground games you used to play at school and what games your children play now. The playground is the highlight of the school day where children can burn off all their energy and play with their friends; share below what you loved to play when you were at school and if any of the games have passed down generations.

Here’s what Unicef has to say: “This year, we’re asking all schools across the UK to join us for the Soccer Aid Playground Challenge to help raise money to help give more children around the world a childhood full of play. The idea is simple – teachers team up with their pupils, design an obstacle course that they will take on together, and fundraise to help children in danger in June 2019. Ask your school to sign up here and we’ll send everything you need for kick off - including fundraising and teaching resources to bring Soccer Aid to life for the whole school.”

Alex, Head of Sports for St Dunstan’s RC Primary School, Manchester says: “The Playground Challenge was the perfect way to get the whole school together for a great cause. Everyone (including staff!) had the best time raising money to help children all over the world.”

So what playground games did you love as a child? Were you Queen of hopscotch? Or perhaps you practised your circus skills with stilts? Maybe you created your own playground football league or were seriously skilled at skipping? Do you know if your children still play the same games now at school?

Everyone who posts below will be entered into a prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list)

Thanks and good luck!

skipping was a big thing at our school although I was rubbish at it, at home in the street we used to play various games of which I've forgotten the rules of now but I remember running from each side of the street .

rejcomp · 29/01/2019 09:30

Bearing in mind the weather, snowball fight...

1969angep · 29/01/2019 12:02

I remember playing classics like Hopscotch, What's the Time Mr Wolf and Simon Says. There were plenty of running around and skipping games too. Rounders was the absolute best though

mynellie · 29/01/2019 12:15

British Bulldog was a favourite as well as Cats Cradle

Breeze81 · 29/01/2019 12:52

I was a huge fan of marbles, skipping and tag. Brings back lots of fond playground memories.

emmmaaa26 · 29/01/2019 15:50

So I used to love all running games. We used to play British bulldog, polo and grannies foot steps.
Also skipping games were always a hit.

sbruin1122 · 29/01/2019 22:19

tag!!

RomanyRoots · 29/01/2019 22:38

British Bulldog, two balls against the Wall, handstands, skipping, elastics
mums old tights with a ball in the toes for swinging round and jumping over.
Oranges and lemons, Mr Wolf, and lots of clapping and rhyming songs. Conkers, marbles (gridsies). Lucky dobbers and steelies.

Doodygirl2009 · 30/01/2019 11:45

Hide & seek and British bull dog were our favourites

welshmardymum · 30/01/2019 14:46

we used to play elastics where you put a loop of elastic around two sets of legs and stood apart so it stretched and then played games of hopping over and twisting it going up in hardness - i LOVED it and i am sure my kids would love it too - they all play something called foursquare .... seems to involve a ball and a grid of 4 squares!

NorthbyNorthwest22 · 30/01/2019 16:08

Elastics was the thing when i was at primary school. Skipping with 2 ropes was for the older girls. You knew you were top of the school when it was your turn to jump in when the ropes were in full swing!

merlymerly · 30/01/2019 16:19

I used to love French elastics and What time is it Mr Fox

Toombumber · 30/01/2019 17:52

We had a game called Red Rover (which got banned). Standing in a line holding hands with your team opposite the other team and shouting 'red rover red rover send [x name] right over!' and they had to run through the arms holding hands and try and force their way through and if they didn't they had to join the team that caught them.

bubbleybooboo · 30/01/2019 20:37

We used to play kirby at school. at the side of the main playground was a driveway with kerbs each side. We loved it. I still play kirby now with my own children

myusername12345 · 30/01/2019 22:15

Skipping, hopscotch, elastics, handclapping, kerby (we lived in a cul-de-sac, I can't imagine it now!)

Karenusher · 30/01/2019 22:21

I loved playing with the skipping rope!

Lindy2 · 30/01/2019 22:22

Skipping and elastics were my favourite.

GillyCl · 31/01/2019 12:19

British Bulldogs and treasure hunts.

Mcdanc3 · 31/01/2019 14:01

I loved playing marbles at school. We had a track that we made ourselves under the trees and each breaktime we would battle it out.

Beckiest · 31/01/2019 16:16

I vividly remember skipping round my school playground with my best friends singing “who wants to play Mummies and Daddies, no boys allowed”... I don’t remember playing it, just singing it!

SUZY156 · 31/01/2019 17:41

I loved to play hopscotch with friends we used chalk to put the numbers on the pavement oh the fun we had x

oldbird100 · 31/01/2019 19:49

Skipping. I loved it!

rocketriffs · 31/01/2019 22:40

Tick and tack (Tag), High dellies, Leave-i-o, Dodgeball, Two man hunt, Hide and seek. I lived in North Scotland in case you never heard of some of these, but they were chase and catch type games.

whitbyranger · 01/02/2019 05:00

We had a lot of skipping ropes, ball games, but played a lot of traditional playground games, too.

Michellemm · 01/02/2019 07:32

We played German skipping, normal skipping, and I remember playing bulldog bulldog and red rover as well as chase tag.
