NOW CLOSED

Unicef UK are launching this years Soccer Aid Playground Challenge and would love to hear about the playground games you used to play at school and what games your children play now. The playground is the highlight of the school day where children can burn off all their energy and play with their friends; share below what you loved to play when you were at school and if any of the games have passed down generations.

Here’s what Unicef has to say: “This year, we’re asking all schools across the UK to join us for the Soccer Aid Playground Challenge to help raise money to help give more children around the world a childhood full of play. The idea is simple – teachers team up with their pupils, design an obstacle course that they will take on together, and fundraise to help children in danger in June 2019. Ask your school to sign up here and we’ll send everything you need for kick off - including fundraising and teaching resources to bring Soccer Aid to life for the whole school.”

Alex, Head of Sports for St Dunstan’s RC Primary School, Manchester says: “The Playground Challenge was the perfect way to get the whole school together for a great cause. Everyone (including staff!) had the best time raising money to help children all over the world.”

So what playground games did you love as a child? Were you Queen of hopscotch? Or perhaps you practised your circus skills with stilts? Maybe you created your own playground football league or were seriously skilled at skipping? Do you know if your children still play the same games now at school?

Everyone who posts below will be entered into a prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list)

Thanks and good luck!

What's the time Mr wolf. Skipping. Ice slides in cold weather. Conkers.

My son wasn't even allowed to go out in the snow till the playground was cleared and gritted.

emmamcmahon · 27/01/2019 14:19

Elastics and catchy kissy. Doubt that would be allowed these days!!

carolyn58 · 27/01/2019 15:29

French skipping! We all had to have a turn at being the legs supporting the elastic, but i would use the kitchen chairs so i could play on my own too! I was obsessed! Also I played Whats the Time Mr Wolf? Very scary!
I don't ever see the children playing group games like that now. I'm glad i grew up when i did. xx

tamalyn1 · 27/01/2019 16:00

we used to play street games, i used to love whats the time mr wolf all the kids wold play and it would go right up the long street, we used to have ace water fights too

sarahbrokenshire · 27/01/2019 16:23

We used to kneel down and tuck out legs into our coats and hobble around calling ourselves Furbys. Very strange but we loved it!

MadisonErin · 27/01/2019 16:56

Love, like or hate!

macblank · 27/01/2019 21:07

WoW, takes me back. 1970s here we go again! lol

British bull dog
Skateboarding... You'd think it was a recent thing, but nope I was boarding around the playground as far back as 1978.
Kiss chase/chase/tag
Kick about. Wasn't like proper football, more a free for all, and each played for themselves.
Hopscotch.
Rebound. Kicking a ball against the wall, usually just 2 kids and you had to play from where the ball stopped. If ya missed the area, you lost a point.
Kirby, or a version
We also played stretch in older school (11+) maybe last year of junior it was darts, thrown between the legs (sometimes in your leg), and older it was a penknife or even a proper knife.

I played a hell of a lot as a kid, and even into my twenties loved a game of football/kick about (by the twenties it was large groups n more like football, but loads of players n odd numbered sides).

My greatest love in my twenties was cycling. I didn't learn to ride until I was 12ish, and didn't stop until my knees n back couldn't take anymore.

I liked skipping, and elastic

mrsglowglow · 27/01/2019 22:12

Rounders
Skipping - the really long rope where we all joined in.
Red rover
Elastics
Dance routines

Natsai1 · 27/01/2019 22:57

We had loads of payground games but I had a few favourites. Rounders which is bouncing a ball within 10 boxes, going from 1 to ten, skipping especially double dutch ( but not the one holding the rope). And classic hop scotch. Unfortunately, having boys, they are mostly interested in football than these games

shaddai88 · 27/01/2019 23:57

I enujoyed playing with skipping ropes, hopscotch and rounders.

tubbyj · 28/01/2019 00:54

it the old favourite great chasing around

Jayjayharrychops · 28/01/2019 02:25

My favourite playgound games when I was at school were hopscotch, team skipping, where two people turned the rope & up to 4 kids jumped in & out of the skipping rope at the same time doing various skipping moves. Everyone's favourite was dodgeball, where three people tried to hit you with a large soft ball while the players ran from one end of the playground to the other whilst dodging the balls thrown at you. If the ball hit you, you were out! A type of run & chase "it" game "what's the time Mr Wolf", conkers which we used to collect from the park on the way home from school, soak in vinegar & then bake in the oven to make them stronger then my friends! I also remember playing "cats cradle", which was a game played with a looped length of string. The string was used to form various shapes, each carrying on from the last. The goal of the game was to get to the next shape without dropping the string. The string was looped around both hands & your opponent had to take the string from your hands , making a new shape at the same time. Thinking about childhood playgound games brings back happy memories. I don't think my kids play any playgound games that I used to which is very sad, as these games should be brought back & reintroduced into playgrounds nowadays.

letsgomaths · 28/01/2019 08:27

@MadisonErin We played love, like or hate, and we used to lead whoever was playing on a really circuitous route. There was a memorable time when I was asked "love, like or hate", having been led around what felt like the whole school: feeling a bit reckless, I said "love". Because I was blindfolded, I didn't know I was facing the teacher on playground duty! Blush

Honeywort · 28/01/2019 08:53

Our best ever was when we were allowed to bring roller skates into school and skAte round the playground. Not sure that would be allowed these days but was great fun at the time,

Gazelda · 28/01/2019 12:31

Elastics! I found a completely overpriced box set of elastics a few years ago. I bought ins my DD and her friends loved it!
I used to love playing 'horses' which was essentially just galloping around the playground while neighing!

sadiewoohoo · 28/01/2019 13:25

I loved Stuck in the Mud and Bulldog

jazzitup · 28/01/2019 13:37

It really was hopscotch for me, loved it, but of course being a boy all those years agao, football was the main fun on the field.

ItsJustASimpleLine · 28/01/2019 15:54

I loved playing stuck in the mud especially went we weren't allowed on the fields as the boy couldn't play football so the whole class played it was great fun.

lolly2011 · 28/01/2019 16:17

boobybirdsworth · 28/01/2019 16:45
