NOW CLOSED

Unicef UK are launching this years Soccer Aid Playground Challenge and would love to hear about the playground games you used to play at school and what games your children play now. The playground is the highlight of the school day where children can burn off all their energy and play with their friends; share below what you loved to play when you were at school and if any of the games have passed down generations.

Here’s what Unicef has to say: “This year, we’re asking all schools across the UK to join us for the Soccer Aid Playground Challenge to help raise money to help give more children around the world a childhood full of play. The idea is simple – teachers team up with their pupils, design an obstacle course that they will take on together, and fundraise to help children in danger in June 2019. Ask your school to sign up here and we’ll send everything you need for kick off - including fundraising and teaching resources to bring Soccer Aid to life for the whole school.”

Alex, Head of Sports for St Dunstan’s RC Primary School, Manchester says: “The Playground Challenge was the perfect way to get the whole school together for a great cause. Everyone (including staff!) had the best time raising money to help children all over the world.”

So what playground games did you love as a child? Were you Queen of hopscotch? Or perhaps you practised your circus skills with stilts? Maybe you created your own playground football league or were seriously skilled at skipping? Do you know if your children still play the same games now at school?

Everyone who posts below will be entered into a prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list)

Thanks and good luck!

@Mentounasc We used to play the "I sent a letter" game. The way we did it was after the main rhyme, we'd then say "it wasn't you, it wasn't you..." going round the circle, eventually saying "it was you!" Drop the letter behind that person, and then run.

Oh and there was a skipping rhyme:
Down by the river, down by the sea,
Johnny broke a bottle and blamed it on me.
I told ma, ma told pa,
Johnny got a spanking so ha ha ha.
How many spanks did Johnny get?
1, 2, 3...

I've recently turned 30 and still have fond memories of play time x

Elllicam · 26/01/2019 07:02

I remember playing horses, the first kid would stand behind the second and bend over and hold them round the waist. A third child would ride on the back of the first and they would run about.

Parisetoile · 26/01/2019 07:49

British bulldog was my absolute favourite. I can still remember all the details of the children playing as if it was yesterday. I loved skipping, individually and with a group rope. 'I like coffee, I like tea, I like ----in with me! '
Also liked cats cradle done with a string on the hands, French skipping with a big elastic, and hand clapping games and rhymes. Anyone remember 'she she my baby, come out and play with me, under the apple tree.....'?
I am amazed reading this thread how many people played British bulldog, I always though it was something that was big just at our school...

MessyJ87 · 26/01/2019 08:46

cheryl100 · 26/01/2019 14:25

I loved playing elastics either using hands or feet! We used to wrap them around the bins so we could all play!

margaritasbythesea · 26/01/2019 15:58

We used to live playing a game in which we pretended to have shrunk to the size of microbes and we lived inside a human body Hmm

Nottheshrinkingcapgrandpa · 26/01/2019 16:06

We did a lot of imagination based games where we were on a spaceship or in Neighbours :D

ItsJuneDad · 26/01/2019 20:14

Marbles was so popular at my school - we used to play on the drain covers. Conkers was also big. And, more randomly, Thundercats!

Emmsd5588 · 26/01/2019 20:16

Skipping and Hopscotch 😊

Duchessofealing · 26/01/2019 21:10

Loads of these! Skipping, elastics, British Bulldogs, please Mrs Crocodile, what time is it mr wolf and we also had a field where we would do handstands, cartwheels etc. Also loved playing Tag which mine love to play now too 😊

hespi · 26/01/2019 21:17

loved marbles

Chwaraeteg · 26/01/2019 21:31

Please Mr Crocodile, may I cross the water, to see the kings daughter? What colour shall I wear?

The person playing the crocodile would then name a colour. Anyone wearing that colour has to make a dash for it and try not to be caught by the crocodile.

It's amazing the things from your childhood you think you have forgotten. I only remembered this recently when my own daughter started school and came home chanting this rhyme.

I was also quite the fan of kiss chase. Why do kids love chasing games so much?

BeeMyBaby · 27/01/2019 07:13

I loved British bulldog but it got banned as I'm pretty sure there were a fair few injuries.

user1485629191 · 27/01/2019 09:45

Elastics - so basic get so much fun!
