NOW CLOSED

Unicef UK are launching this years Soccer Aid Playground Challenge and would love to hear about the playground games you used to play at school and what games your children play now. The playground is the highlight of the school day where children can burn off all their energy and play with their friends; share below what you loved to play when you were at school and if any of the games have passed down generations.

Here’s what Unicef has to say: “This year, we’re asking all schools across the UK to join us for the Soccer Aid Playground Challenge to help raise money to help give more children around the world a childhood full of play. The idea is simple – teachers team up with their pupils, design an obstacle course that they will take on together, and fundraise to help children in danger in June 2019. Ask your school to sign up here and we’ll send everything you need for kick off - including fundraising and teaching resources to bring Soccer Aid to life for the whole school.”

Alex, Head of Sports for St Dunstan’s RC Primary School, Manchester says: “The Playground Challenge was the perfect way to get the whole school together for a great cause. Everyone (including staff!) had the best time raising money to help children all over the world.”

So what playground games did you love as a child? Were you Queen of hopscotch? Or perhaps you practised your circus skills with stilts? Maybe you created your own playground football league or were seriously skilled at skipping? Do you know if your children still play the same games now at school?

Everyone who posts below will be entered into a prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list)

Thanks and good luck!

What's the time Mr wolf was a favourite and I loved bulldog though that's banned now it was such fun!

ninamotylinski · 21/01/2019 14:18

I loved the classics like Stuck in The Mud and tag you're it! The odd game of kiss chase and anything involving skipping! So funny when my children come home and say they played stuck in the mud or tag, as you always imagine it's only your generation that knew these things. Luckily they haven't played kiss chase yet!

Cat's Cradle was the game we played with the elastic which kept us amused for hours on the playground. And also 'jacks' or 'five stones' which we made out of small squares of material filled with rice. It never seemed to be raining at playtime then!

Minnibix · 21/01/2019 14:21

We played lots of hopscotch , elastic, jump rope, the Farmer wants a Wife and something called the Alley Alley oo (not sure on the spelling) Its hard to describe does anyone else remember this game ?

RACHELSMITH45 · 21/01/2019 14:25

Has to be hopscotch..what time is it Mr Wolf and remember playing a game with elastics!

helly27 · 21/01/2019 14:26

Kick the can, hop scotch, skipping, making grass camps and handstands.

@LoveWasAccidental - Essex!

sophiefx · 21/01/2019 15:08

I loved "Whats the time, Mr Wolf?"

We would play this all through break time! To be a kid again...

mooota1514 · 21/01/2019 15:13

British bulldog until it got banned - each term they’d give us a lecture on safety and let us play it and then 2 weeks later it was banned.
Skipping and clapping games
Catch and kiss chase!
I did spend quite a lot of year 3 doing handstands against a brick wall.
Once I hit secondary it all stopped

angela121262 · 21/01/2019 15:22

We liked to play hopscotch, skipping and tick which we all ran about tagging each other saying you’re the man! That person had to run and tag someone else !

Mitcholiver · 21/01/2019 15:43

Hopscotch! We would play this every lunch and break time and throw a pebble onto the number and miss that step. Simple game entertaining is for hours.

itsali · 21/01/2019 15:57

We played British Bulldog, ball games and skipped. I think I liked the climbing frames best although I don't think they have them any more.

sm2012 · 21/01/2019 16:00

My favourites when I was at school was stuck in the mud, red rover, british bulldog, skipping and hide and seek :)

Cashy17 · 21/01/2019 16:00

Always jump rope and see how many of us could jump in and not catch the rope, we always sang songs to it as well....oh the simple life!

addverbaan · 21/01/2019 16:03

Handstands against the wall lol. We made a competition of it to see who was the last one standing!

gmaisey · 21/01/2019 16:22

Used to love British Bulldog and Tag! :)

like7 · 21/01/2019 16:26

Skipping in a big group with massive long rope. .. sang as we all jumped in and out and different times. My children never did this sadly. Also my mum sewed a piece of elastic together and we stood with it round our ankles with another person and then stepped different ways ... ?? Can't remember all the details but also did it with wool on our hands and made loads of intricate patterns.etc. Great memories of happy times!

matphil · 21/01/2019 16:37

I used to play hopscotch, tag and skipping, my daughter still plays these now in the same school that I went to.

sezz35 · 21/01/2019 16:44

The game I remember clearly is elastics which we played all the time. Also we always played conkers which was good fun.

beckyinman · 21/01/2019 16:45

I remember loving a game called bulldog which involved sprinting the length of the playground. I think it got banned though because of too many scraped knees

soots717 · 21/01/2019 16:45

We loved skipping as a group and on my own. My father used to hold cricket games on our lawn and all the kids from the street used to come and join in - magical times sadly very rarely seen nowadays

Elizasmum02 · 21/01/2019 16:46

i used to love playing hopscotch tag and skipping gamees :)

JoJoY · 21/01/2019 16:49

I loved playing elastics, we had so many rhymes to jump too!
