NOW CLOSED

Unicef UK are launching this years Soccer Aid Playground Challenge and would love to hear about the playground games you used to play at school and what games your children play now. The playground is the highlight of the school day where children can burn off all their energy and play with their friends; share below what you loved to play when you were at school and if any of the games have passed down generations.

Here’s what Unicef has to say: “This year, we’re asking all schools across the UK to join us for the Soccer Aid Playground Challenge to help raise money to help give more children around the world a childhood full of play. The idea is simple – teachers team up with their pupils, design an obstacle course that they will take on together, and fundraise to help children in danger in June 2019. Ask your school to sign up here and we’ll send everything you need for kick off - including fundraising and teaching resources to bring Soccer Aid to life for the whole school.”

Alex, Head of Sports for St Dunstan’s RC Primary School, Manchester says: “The Playground Challenge was the perfect way to get the whole school together for a great cause. Everyone (including staff!) had the best time raising money to help children all over the world.”

So what playground games did you love as a child? Were you Queen of hopscotch? Or perhaps you practised your circus skills with stilts? Maybe you created your own playground football league or were seriously skilled at skipping? Do you know if your children still play the same games now at school?

Everyone who posts below will be entered into a prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list)

Thanks and good luck!

British Bulldog, Conkers, Dodgeball and leapfrog

Marmarmarmite · 21/01/2019 12:49

Skipping, elastics (with short songs to go with the actions), tag, pretend games. Handstands and cartwheels, set to rhymes.

MrsRix32 · 21/01/2019 12:50

Bulldog, It and Kiss Chase. Then if I was playing with the boys we would run around playing guns or if I was with the girls then there was skipping. But mainly we played games where we were role-playing, for example there was one where we were in a girl band called the buzzy bees or another where we my friends were all magical monkeys and I was a hyena (my choice) and we all went flying and on magical adventures. Think I had decided that monkeys were too boring haha.

We did a lot of skipping - really complicated stuff with two ropes and jumping in and out. I'm not the most co-ordinated adult so it'sbeyond my understanding how I managed to be so good at it! There were also lots of equally complicated tennis ball games, throwing and catching mulitple balls to each other. There still seems to be a lot of running around in playgrounds these days but I never see anything that looks like the games we used to play.

Loved marbles, conkers and cat's cradle. Hop scotch was another played often.

Emmax12 · 21/01/2019 13:04

Hopscotch, stuck in the mud, tag/it, British bulldog. Also like skipping. So much fun!

MrRichTea · 21/01/2019 13:28

What's the time Mr. Wolf / Mr Fox was always great fun as little'un!

happysouls · 21/01/2019 13:31

Well its been a long time, I can't remember if they had names! There was one where someone faced the wall and everyone else was in a line at the top of the playground and they had to creep up to the wall but if the person at the wall turned and caught them moving they had to go back to the start!

In summer we were allowed to get out stilts and pogo sticks and hula hoops from the shed! That was always fantastic!

AuFinch · 21/01/2019 13:33

Well I am a survivor of playing all those dangerous games we had in the 70's that are banned from most schools now!

Marbles, conkers, elastics - I would spend ages doing that with friends (and i never found out where someone got all that extra long thick elastic), cat in the cradle, skipping with nylon washing line that would leave lines on the back of my legs, and not forgetting the ball in the sock that was whacked around my body while leaning against the wall!

Nearly forgot finger-knitting, british bulldog, tig, hide and seek, and also trotting like a horse and in summer while on the field we used to make daisy chains, birds nests and dig for pottery pieces underneath a huge electricity pylon!!!! All the sports kind of games we actually did in P.E. so we saved playtime for the good stuff.

Amazing, and kids should be allowed to do these games now (maybe not underneath an electricity pylon though)!

sheilads105 · 21/01/2019 13:36

Hopscotch was my fave - my daughters still play it.

rainbowvalley · 21/01/2019 13:39

Loved Skipping and French skipping as well as marbles!

EmmaBuffaloWing · 21/01/2019 13:44

I loved playing elastics. I don't even think kids play that anymore. My second favourite was skipping and hula hooping. I'd play all of them for hours!

lossyinc · 21/01/2019 13:44

Marbles on a drian cover we made are own game up it was really fun and wish things were so simple now, good times

cherylann2461 · 21/01/2019 13:50

All the old classics like catch, elastics, piggy in the middle. We never ran out of ideas for games to play.

lizd31 · 21/01/2019 13:50

My favourite was Elastic Twist but I also loved Hopscotch & What Time is it Mister Wolf

littlemonkeyz · 21/01/2019 13:51

Our favourite game was 'releveo' - not sure how to spell it. Basically it was tag but you can't be tagged when you're on a 'base'.

Happyjad · 21/01/2019 13:53

Loved playing marbles on the drains as well as football at lunchtime 😀

amyhalliday1 · 21/01/2019 13:56

Blinds man bluff was my fave,

iamsaranna · 21/01/2019 14:01

I was a big hopscotch fan and also loved skipping and tag.

tabbaz123 · 21/01/2019 14:12

We used to play marbles a lot and actually only a couple of years ago I bumped into a boy that was in my class at Primary School and we laughed over the marbles we played. The following time I saw him he gave me a marble - a marble that he had 'won' from me 40 years ago! I am not sure why he kept it for so long but memories of playtime have been flooding back ever since.

Pmliu · 21/01/2019 14:14

I used to love playing games like 'What's the time Mr Wolf and Stuck in the mud, Kiss chase.

alabaster002 · 21/01/2019 14:14

Football but with a tennis ball - require immense skill which most of us did not have!
