NOW CLOSED

Unicef UK are launching this years Soccer Aid Playground Challenge and would love to hear about the playground games you used to play at school and what games your children play now. The playground is the highlight of the school day where children can burn off all their energy and play with their friends; share below what you loved to play when you were at school and if any of the games have passed down generations.

Here’s what Unicef has to say: “This year, we’re asking all schools across the UK to join us for the Soccer Aid Playground Challenge to help raise money to help give more children around the world a childhood full of play. The idea is simple – teachers team up with their pupils, design an obstacle course that they will take on together, and fundraise to help children in danger in June 2019. Ask your school to sign up here and we’ll send everything you need for kick off - including fundraising and teaching resources to bring Soccer Aid to life for the whole school.”

Alex, Head of Sports for St Dunstan’s RC Primary School, Manchester says: “The Playground Challenge was the perfect way to get the whole school together for a great cause. Everyone (including staff!) had the best time raising money to help children all over the world.”

So what playground games did you love as a child? Were you Queen of hopscotch? Or perhaps you practised your circus skills with stilts? Maybe you created your own playground football league or were seriously skilled at skipping? Do you know if your children still play the same games now at school?

Everyone who posts below will be entered into a prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list)

Thanks and good luck!

Always loved British Bulldog and Conkers - they've probably both been banned now!

ang65t · 21/01/2019 17:10

Reading these comments bring back some very happy memories, especially the elastic and the huge skipping rope, all were favourites of mine, bring back playground games.

strawberrisc · 21/01/2019 17:18

Skipping (including Double Dutch). I still remember all the rhymes! Marbles (eventually banned). British Bulldogs (also banned). I don't know the name of it but where two girls (always was girls) would stand a metre or so apart with a long elastic around their ankles. You had to stand on the elastic at different points to a rhyme.

Skipping and what’s the time mr wolf

Rachdayan · 21/01/2019 17:26

Have great memories of playing games like British Bulldog in the street, and drawing out the grids for games of hopscotch. Also remember playing oranges and lemons in the playground and usually being the unlucky one that ran through the raised arms of my friends as the hangman's 'chop' came down.

veegstez · 21/01/2019 17:27

I really liked rounders!

witchofwestwick · 21/01/2019 17:30

Handstands against the wall. It cost nothing kept you fit and everyone was equal as you needed no resources to be able to play.
It was always a sign of summer play times with rows of girls upside down against the school walls flashing off there knickers.
Sadly you will no longer see this for health and safty reasons I am told.

gd2011 · 21/01/2019 17:39

Marbles all year and conkers in the autumn.

thesockgap · 21/01/2019 17:49

I used to love playing elastics, hopscotch and tick. Oh and Kiss Chase, that was a popular one!!
My kids are no longer in primary school but when they were, they played similar games - especially tick, what's the time Mr Wolf, stuck in the mud, etc. It's good to see that some things don't change!

robinson131 · 21/01/2019 17:51

My favourite game was hopscotch.

krnries · 21/01/2019 17:54

MrsHaze · 21/01/2019 17:55

mo3733 · 21/01/2019 19:02

blind mans buff and kerbs. loved them all

muppet1501 · 21/01/2019 19:18

Used to love playing hopscotch and elastics

Tonkatol · 21/01/2019 19:23

My favourite game at primary school was French Skipping, with the elastic. I also enjoyed skipping with a rope. The good thing with these games were you could have an infinite number of children taking part - ordinary skipping could be carried out solo and French Skipping any number of children from 3 upwards could take part.

My daughter left primary school a couple of years ago and she often used to play Bulldog; initially, I thought it was the same of British Bulldog, but it is evidently different.

One thing I have noticed is that nowadays, there are far more organised activities at lunchtime, whether sporting, crafty or game playing. When I was at school, children organised their own entertainment.

buntybaby · 21/01/2019 19:35

Skipping was definitely my favourite. We would take it in turns to hold the rope and see how many of us could skip together at one time. Even the teachers on duty would join in.

LauLau82 · 21/01/2019 19:41

I loved playing hopscotch with my friends, and marbles and conkers. All good fun!

Tefiti2 · 21/01/2019 19:54

Skipping was always a firm favourite, and what’s the time mr wolf!
