Deodorant for a lot of people is a staple in their daily routine and there will come a time when you have to buy your child/children their first deodorant too, if you haven’t already! Therefore Dove would love to find out about all your experiences and preferences when it comes to deodorant for both your child and yourself.

Here’s what Dove have to say: “At Dove, all of our anti-perspirant products deliver reliable all day protection against sweat and odour with a gentle formula, which cares for delicate underarm skin. We know that you want to make the best choices for your teenagers when it comes to the products they use on their skin. We want to hear what is important to you when it comes to selecting products for yourself and your teenagers!”

What deodorant do you buy and why? Did you buy a specific kind of deodorant for your child’s first one? Did you have a chat with your child on how and why they needed to start using it? Do you or your child prefer spray, roll-on or stick? Are there any scents you love or do you go for the ones without scents? What is the most important factor for you when buying a deodorant for yourself and/or your child? What about anti-mark deodorants?

Whatever you and/or your child’s experiences are around deodorant, share them on the thread below to be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

I've given up on Dove as a brand (too long and political to go into here) which is a pity because I've used it for years and loved the smell of their pomegranate products.

lolly2011 · 08/09/2018 08:51

I prefer a roll on deodorant and usually look for 24 / 48 hr protection, ith no marks. My husband uses a spray which I feel can be overpowering at first, he goes for a no white marks / staining one. I started my son off with a roll on because of in primary school they were not allowed sprays but now he is in Secondary he prefers a spray.

bluebump · 08/09/2018 09:23

I forgot to add in my original post about what I use/would use on my DS, he’s only 10 so nearly at the deodorant stage. I think I’ll start him off on something as natural as possible before we hit the more lynx body spray stage!

Strugglingtodomybest · 08/09/2018 09:42

What deodorant do you buy and why?
Sure Motionsense spray

Did you buy a specific kind of deodorant for your child’s first one?
Lynx because isn't that what all teenage boys wear?!

Did you have a chat with your child on how and why they needed to start using it?
Yes, I told him that he needed to start wearing it else he'd smell.

Do you or your child prefer spray, roll-on or stick?
I havent really thought about this befire, ive just always bought sprays.

Are there any scents you love or do you go for the ones without scents?
Hate hate hate scents for me but love Lynx Africa on men Grin

What is the most important factor for you when buying a deodorant for yourself and/or your child?
Firstly, does it do the job? Secondly, what dies it smell like?

What about anti-mark deodorants?
Don't really think about this.

BellaVida · 08/09/2018 11:48

What deodorant do you buy and why?
Dove original, Nivea or Sure spray. Sometimes my DH's if mine runs out.

Did you buy a specific kind of deodorant for your child’s first one?
My boys chose their own and went for Lynx. My daughter used my Dove original, but has since had Sure as well.

Did you have a chat with your child on how and why they needed to start using it?
Yes. We talked about the fact they would start to sweat more and the science behind what makes sweat smell. I think it's important for them to understand what happens to their bodies.

Do you or your child prefer spray, roll-on or stick?
Spray at home, but roll-on in their gym bags, as sprays aren't allowed at school. Can you imagine the choking clouds of deodorant in the changing rooms?!

Are there any scents you love or do you go for the ones without scents?
I prefer soapy scents, which smell 'clean' and freshly showered. I hate very floral scents. I find many of the men's sports deodorants and some others are actually really nice too.

What is the most important factor for you when buying a deodorant for yourself and/or your child?
For me, I need to know work and last all day, for the environment I will be in. That's combined with the scent I prefer. For the DC, I focus on the whether they will like the smell and also look ok for alcohol free. I would like to get aluminium free for all of us, but I cant find it in any supermarkets, even with roll-ons.

What about anti-mark deodorants?
Yes, I often wear black and dress in a hurry, so it's useful but not essential. I would compare prices/ offers and would use it if it were the same price, cheaper and fulfilled my main criteria.

Didiusfalco · 08/09/2018 13:07

We prefer roll-on, something sensitive and non-stingy after shaving. I tend to go for Dove or Sanex depending if one has an offer on. Try to buy a unisex fragrance and then me and dh will share, otherwise he uses a spray.

Headfullofdreams · 08/09/2018 13:12

Just bought DS3 his first deodorant and bought a roll on as thiink it's more environmentally friendly (marginally) than spray.
He is happy to put it on, it's not a strong smell. Can't remember the brand, just chose a reasonable priced one that's for men.

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 08/09/2018 14:20

I went through a "only want natural blabla" phase when I was young and idealistic...did the whole rubbing crystals in my pits malarky. Makes me chuckle now, I must have been minging. I live in a country where you can only really get "deodorant" and not anti-perspirant, even for brands which in the UK offer both (Nivea for example) I have sometimes made the mistake of buying one of those thinking, as others have said, sweating =normal etc. Fine and dandy, except despite showering at least once a day, within hours, people stink.

So, if I'm buying a product here, then yes, I buy Dove, because it's one of very few that actually work. I like the fresher smelling ones, not the sweet heavily perfumed ones. I prefer a spray as it feels fresher somehow. In the UK, I buy whatever is on offer, as there is much more choice. The Boots own brand ones are excellent.

Did you buy a specific kind of deodorant for your child’s first one? It would have been a Dove one, for the above reasons- probably the sensitive one, or the talc perfumed one.

Did you have a chat with your child on how and why they needed to start using it? Absolutely- noticed when she was about 11 that she had started to get whiffy. And no matter what people say about it being natural and making kids grow up too quickly- nobody wants to sit next to a BO ridden person a tube.

Do you or your child prefer spray, roll-on or stick? Spray for me. Sometimes roll on. The sticks finish far too quickly and are not cost-effective, ditto the cream things.

What about anti-mark deodorants? Not found one that works yet.

Itsmeaga1n · 08/09/2018 14:28

I use a crystal roll on because I don't like the thought of aluminium on my skin after reading articles about the problems it can cause. However I admit I buy any deodorant that is strong and on offer for dd17 because otherwise she smells.

WishUponAStar88 · 08/09/2018 15:27

I use the maximum protection dove or sure stick. It’s pricey compared to others but I do find it does a better job than the regular roll on/ sprays

NannyR · 08/09/2018 15:48

I use a crystal stick deodorant simply because it works best for me, it stops any body odour and its extremely economical (one crystal deodorant stone lasts years), that also means I'm not throwing away plastic packaging every six weeks or so. I prefer a product with no fragrance.

kateandme · 08/09/2018 16:08

go through stages of stick or sprays.especailly when they somehow seem to just change the recipe!i don't like that.
a quick spray if needing a refresher or popping out can feel nicer.
the smell has to be suttle.i like the slight scent of clean if in stick or spray.but if I wanted something more scented id go for the spray as I don't want any perfumed things next to my skin via a stick.
it will be talked about how to keep clean first and foremost.this stick or spray doesn't keep you clean or change how clean you are its just an add in for keeping locked in the goodness when you do shower clean etc.
lynx has been great for boy.and nike.
sure and dove for girls.

isaterror · 08/09/2018 16:29

I use the black Sure spray deodrant which is unscented as they seem to be most effective, i particularly like a clean fresh cucumber smell for some reason but Sure don't seem to do this so I have settled for their black non mark one. I don't like roll ons as they make me feel sticky and a spray dries immediately.

Choosing deodrant for my 7 yo daughter was a surprise decision to make at that age - i don't think i started using it til much later. Given that she has sensitive skin and suffers from exczema i wanted to make sure we got the right one so as not to put her off using it. I did quite a bit of research and we went to the supermarket to choose one together. She chose an unscented dove one and I guided her towards a roll-on rather than an spray so as she wouldn't have to worry about spraying it in the wrong direction and she has been happy with that method. Unfortunately she said the Dove one itched her skin after a few days and we had to switch to another brand. We have since gone through quite a few to find one she is happy with! and ended up with a Sanex "Dermo non stop dry" roll on. I talked to her about starting to use deodrant when i noticed she was starting to smell after PE during a hot day this summer - I reassured her that it wouldn't smell "perfumey" as she was shy about her friends finding out she was using. Unscented was very important to her. She is now happy using it and we will continue with Sanex - i chose that brand as it has the reputation of cleanliness and no fuss/frills!

whatthefoxsaid · 08/09/2018 17:34

I used to just buy any old deodorant but in the last few years I've noticed that Sure makes me sweatier and sprays in general don't last long enough. I tried the Mum 0% alcohol as my skin can be sensitive but it took ages to dry and wasn't effective.
Then I started using the Dove original stick and haven't looked back. I normally only go for brands if they're on offer but I buy this regardless because its reliable. The fragrance is delicate, it feels nice to put on, it doesn't mark my clothes and most importantly I still smell fresh at the end of the day, even in the recent heatwave!
My DD is a long way off needing deodorant but when she is ready, I'll let her choose her own. I'd prefer not to have clouds of spray but we'll see what she goes for.

KingBobra · 08/09/2018 17:43

DD's first deodorant was a Keep It Kind one, as another poster mentioned upthread. I personally go for deodorants which don't leave marks on clothes.

RhubarbAndCustards · 08/09/2018 18:49

My most import feature is anti wetness as I sweat A LOT! Then I look for one that doesn’t mark clothing and keeps a fresh scent all day.

lljkk · 08/09/2018 19:16

These marketing surveys on MN... does MNHQ choose an answer at random or is it only someone who said something nice about Dove who can win? I've always wondered.

LostPlatypus · 08/09/2018 20:06

I used to use Dove but they stopped working for me. I now use Soft & Gentle 0% Aluminium spray (prefer the floral one but I'll use whichever I can get).

smileyfacechocolatebutton · 08/09/2018 20:30

I always use dove anti-marks spray. I don’t like roll-ons and white marks on clothes used to drive me mad!
I buy my son Lynx as it seems to be considered the ‘cool’ option among his friends!

OnlyToWin · 08/09/2018 20:58

I use a no white marks roll on - I use either Dove or Sure depending on which is on offer tbh. When either brand is on offer I tend to stock up and buy about six at a time. I’d hate to run out!!

No white marks is my priority in a deodorant. I would look all over for a no white marks one as I get ready quickly and so like to put clothes on without having to wait for deodorant to dry. There’s nothing worse (deodorant wise) than those white patches on the sides of your clothes.

I buy my children the same deodorant I use. I find both brands I use quite gentle. I have not researched this matter enough to really worry about ingredients etc.

drspouse · 08/09/2018 21:05

I use a spray at the moment as it's the only kind currently recyclable in the UK. I'd love deodorant companies to think about their packaging more.
Generally, I like something with no or a very very light scent, and I'm not a fan of roll on as I find it gets sticky.

Jumbojem · 08/09/2018 21:20

For me, I prefer roll on as I hate aerosols and feel like you loose most of the product into the atmosphere. Also don't think they are environmentally sound. I don't like a strong scent and not fussed about no mark claims particularly. Recently had an aluminium free one from Aldi which I'd use again otherwise usually mitchum for me as I hate getting sweaty at work.
For DS who is 11 I've got him a salt spray which is only deodorant not anti perspirant as I think it's healthier. He does also have a lynx spray, which again is not anti perspirant. He understands he needs to use deo everyday as he smells pretty strong otherwise, plus regular change of clothes etc.
Have used dove in the past and generally like dove products, especially the scent. But not for DC as yet unless you do a deo only and not just anti perspirant.

NastyCats · 08/09/2018 21:20

I use a Nivea invisible at the moment because in the summer marks are so much easier to see on clothes. That said, it's not that effective in very hot weather or against being very active. I bought the same one fir my dd when she was almost 11 and in need of a but of under arm protection in the warm weather.

Mummymummums · 08/09/2018 21:38

I wouldn't get a spray for either of my DC - when I was young I got carried away with a spray in a small bathroom and ended up with breathing problems - I was quite poorly. Had to go to GP. My own fault but I've been a bit anti-aerosol since.
My DC are 10 and 11 and no sign of whiffs yet. I'll probably go for an unscented creamy roll on for DD when the time comes.

DinosApple · 08/09/2018 22:02

I only use roll ons. Sprays are too cold!

My current preference is for the Dove cucumber one, I buy them when on offer or at Home Bargains. I want dry, pleasant smelling pits, no white marks is a bonus.

The DC are still too young for now.
