Deodorant for a lot of people is a staple in their daily routine and there will come a time when you have to buy your child/children their first deodorant too, if you haven’t already! Therefore Dove would love to find out about all your experiences and preferences when it comes to deodorant for both your child and yourself.

Here’s what Dove have to say: “At Dove, all of our anti-perspirant products deliver reliable all day protection against sweat and odour with a gentle formula, which cares for delicate underarm skin. We know that you want to make the best choices for your teenagers when it comes to the products they use on their skin. We want to hear what is important to you when it comes to selecting products for yourself and your teenagers!”

What deodorant do you buy and why? Did you buy a specific kind of deodorant for your child’s first one? Did you have a chat with your child on how and why they needed to start using it? Do you or your child prefer spray, roll-on or stick? Are there any scents you love or do you go for the ones without scents? What is the most important factor for you when buying a deodorant for yourself and/or your child? What about anti-mark deodorants?

Whatever you and/or your child’s experiences are around deodorant, share them on the thread below to be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

Always a roll on or stick, I find sprays very intrusive and don't like inhaling them which is inevitable at some point. Sometimes I buy dove, often the Nivea and sure are on offer so will get them.
My kids are a little small for it yet, but when the one comes I will buy them deodorants similar to the ones I use I expect. As they get older they'll pick their own I'm sure!

NeverTwerkNaked · 07/09/2018 21:20

I use Sure roll on. I like that it doesn’t seem to stain my clothes at all. I only use it if I am “out and about”. I try and have a break from it at least a couple of days a week as I do worry about harm caused by using lots of products.

For a teen I would want something effective (so they aren’t teased) but also as natural as possible and gentle on sensitive skin (as both my children are eczema prone)

Gammeldragz · 07/09/2018 21:30

I use Dove or Sanex, depending on what's on offer. Always roll on, not keen on sprays.
My sons are almost at the age where they need something, I bought eldest an Adidas spray for when he went to school residential, but he doesn't use it at home. He doesn't seem to smell yet, so clearly doesn't need it. A shower twice a week is fine for now.

Excessive bathing and use of products is not good for skin.

Halfahalo · 07/09/2018 21:32

I like to use Sure spray anti-perspirant, as i know I can rely on it to keep me fresh.
I also use Sanex roll on after epilating my armpits as it doesn't sting and keeps my skin from getting dry.

perfectionistchaos · 07/09/2018 21:38

We have a lot of problems with deodorant. DD hates the "sticky" feel of roll on, but I hate aerosols, especially as there is asthma in the family and I can't see a way to avoid inhaling it. We have a lot of arguments as she avoids wearing it most of the time. :( We also hate strong smells, as subtle as possible for a teenager please.
Personally, I'm happy with a wide range of roll ons but we are trying to reduce our use of plastics, so I prefer glass bottles.

OrdinarySnowflake · 07/09/2018 21:39

I use dove or sure, but aim for the lowest scent, I don't like deodorants to smell strongly.

Easylikeasonntagmorgan · 07/09/2018 21:49

I normally choose whichever brand is on offer, preferably one which does not mark clothing, and smells nice.

What & why ? > I buy Sure Cool Blue as a roll-on with the first ingredient alcohol denat. l, because it dries quicker, the scent is acceptable, and it is efficient. Children's experiences > My daughters used mine to begin with, then bought body sprays thinking they did the same thing, then bought the water-based roll-on in error and found out they didn't dry so well. They've learnt by trial and error mostly and its ongoing- my one daughter won't use anything with methyl...liza....chloro...ine because she had a bad reaction one time. Format > One prefers roll-on, the other sprays- except when we were in a hotel room recently and she was worried the spray would set off the fire alarm- so she used mine (again). Scent > I decant mine into another roll-on bottle I've saved, and add my favourite EDT so its one part EDT to 3 parts deodorant. Then I snap on the roll-on head and give it a good shake. (don't try this at home with modern packs) Marks > I haven't noticed marks so much, but my favourite tops get a small stiff patch on the underarm - and I'd love to know how to get rid of it. I'm thinking more along the lines of a specialist pre-wash treatment here, not a reformulation of deodorant.

Pandasarecute · 07/09/2018 22:08

I use whatever is on offer but I'm not a very sweaty person. However I am looking for a good deodorant for sweaty DD who has taken after her dad! I started her on the skin kind environmentally friendly ones but they do nothing. Currently trying different brands with her to see what's best.

BananaDaiquiri · 07/09/2018 22:25

I use Sure or Dove roll on and prefer the non-marking ones.

I recently bought a first deodorant for DD and I got Bionsen as it was advertised as aluminium free. TBH I have no idea whether that's better for young kids or not, but I was worried about getting anything that seemed too chemical-y. She's only 8 but she had one day in summer when she was a bit whiffy and I got worried and decided I ought to get that deodorant just in case, but she hasn't had an issue since so she hasn't tried it. I tried it when I ran out of the usual and I didn't feel confident at all, kept thinking I could smell myself, I definitely didn't feel fresh when I used it.

I would like to see something for teens and pre-teens that works, and that parents feel comfortable buying in terms of ingredients.

defineme · 07/09/2018 23:00

My teenagers were strong smelling so we use Mitcham as it seems stronger but washing themselves and biological powder on the armpits of their school shirts is key

itsonlysubterfuge · 07/09/2018 23:24

I grew up in America and the use of spray is a lot less common so I have never used spray! I like stick the best. I'm worried about the harsh chemicals in deodorant, but can't use natural ones because of sensitive skin. I prefer the less fruity smells. I will get Dove for my DD when it's time.

Honeyroar · 07/09/2018 23:37

I only use products that aren't tested on animals. I don't think there is any need to torture a living creature nowadays. So I would never touch any product from Dove. I use Bodyshop doeoderant roll on or Jäsön solid stick deodorant.

PickAChew · 07/09/2018 23:48

I only needed a light anti perspirant until I hit perimenopause and now even a Mitcham stick doesn't do the job on a hot day. All a deodorant does is badly mask the smell.

Teen needed a strong antiperspirant from the off. Thankfully preteen seems to be taking after me and we've had a summer more than I anticipated with nothing at all.

GoodbyeSummer · 07/09/2018 23:53

What deodorant do you buy and why? whatever is on offer at the time because I don't have a lot of money. Did you buy a specific kind of deodorant for your child’s first one? n/a. Did you have a chat with your child on how and why they needed to start using it? Even though my children are young they have seen me use deodorant and have asked what it is and why I use it. We have talked about how their bodies will change as they grow up, that one of those changes is they sweat more and that sweat will sometimes smell bad so they need to hide it. Do you or your child prefer spray, roll-on or stick? I prefer roll-on because it doesn't fill the room with the chemicals and make other people choke. It lasts longer and goes exactly where it's needed. Are there any scents you love or do you go for the ones without scents? I prefer the antiperspirants without much of a scent. What is the most important factor for you when buying a deodorant for yourself and/or your child? Cost and how effective an antiperspirant it is. What about anti-mark deodorants? I tried them in the past but found they weren't really very effective at reducing my underarm sweat or at masking the smell.

Flapdoodles · 08/09/2018 00:04

I used Mitchum antiperspirant spray at the moment but use Dove occasionally - I like the powder fresh/shower fresh fragrances. My DS has recently started using deodorant. I bought him Lynx originally but don't feel this works properly (he does a lot of sports) so I have bought him a Sure stick which seems to be working fine.

I found it really difficult to choose a deodorant for DS as I was conscious of introducing strong chemicals.

itsallgravybaby · 08/09/2018 00:59

I look for an antiperspirant as I'm quite active and need to extra protection. I also have to have anti-white marks as I wear mostly black!

I use the spray type everyday but for particularly strenuous events I'll use the roll on stick as I find it lasts a bit longer.

No children, but my partner looks for a deodorant that's made from natural ingredients where possible - we are willing to pay a higher price for something with kinder ingredients!

HandOff · 08/09/2018 07:32

I use maximum protection, dove or sure, depending on what's on offer. I think they are pretty much identical. They've changed my life though. No more worrying about sweaty armpits in summer.

lisapop · 08/09/2018 07:50

I use sure antibacterial spray it works really well & lasts all day leaving no marks on my clothing.

Both my teen daughters use a spray one too.

When we go away we usually take a roll on with us.

ButterflyOfFreedom · 08/09/2018 07:54

I wear a roll on - usually Sure but I must admit that I sometimes switch brands if another 'decent' one is offer.
I have used Dove before and like it. It seems great for sensitive skin & has a nice smell.
I've used sprays before too but don't really like the strong scent / aerosol smell plus seems less environmentally friendly somehow.

My DC are too young for deodorant at the moment.

Mumtothenipper · 08/09/2018 07:56

I use the Dove stick deodorant and have done for years now. I try and buy it when on offer if possible. I prefer the dry stick feel to roll on and have avoided spray for a while as I never felt like the spray protects as well.

I have a very active day and am always on the move, I feel well protected with Dove and like the moisturising effect. As a lady with very large breasts I also always run my deodorant under my breasts before putting my bra on too. Last week we were on holiday in 30 degree heat and to my absolute horror I realised I forgot to pack my Dove. My husband helpfully shared his spray Lynx with me, but going back to spray for a week really reinforced how much I like my Dove.

Sitranced · 08/09/2018 07:58

I use whichever roll-on is on offer. I like the sticks too but you loose too much of the product in the packaging and you have to go rummaging to get it all out. The packaging is what bugs me about deodorants really it's a bit overkill with the plastic ball but I wouldn't know how to reduce it further but that's for the experts to work out.

MakeTeaNotWar · 08/09/2018 08:06

I just use whatever roll on is on offer. I don't like sprays. DD is only 8 but when the time comes, I'll steer her towards a stick or roll on too

OrdinaryGirl · 08/09/2018 08:10

What deodorant do you buy and why?
Sure - it keeps me dry and smelling nice all day. If I can't get Sure I buy Dove.

Did you buy a specific kind of deodorant for your child’s first one?
Nope - just a Sure shower fresh one for my stepson (13)

Did you have a chat with your child on how and why they needed to start using it?
Very briefly explained about bacteria / apocrine / breaking down sweat and how it makes you smell.

Do you or your child prefer spray, roll-on or stick?
I prefer roll-on as I don't like aerosols, and there's less mess and product waste.

Are there any scents you love or do you go for the ones without scents?
I like fresh / natural scents that don't clash with my perfume. So citrus / aloe vera / low-key 'deodoranty' scents rather than perfumey ones.

What is the most important factor for you when buying a deodorant for yourself and/or your child?
Dryness and freshness.

What about anti-mark deodorants?
I haven't found these to be as effective in preventing sweat smells as regular versions.

Doingreat · 08/09/2018 08:24

Currently I'm using nivea roll on. I'm not fussy about brands but I do want one without alcohol and will use whatever is on offer.

I do use spray but as a fragrance over clothes not on the skin. It feels too cold.
