Deodorant for a lot of people is a staple in their daily routine and there will come a time when you have to buy your child/children their first deodorant too, if you haven’t already! Therefore Dove would love to find out about all your experiences and preferences when it comes to deodorant for both your child and yourself.

Here’s what Dove have to say: “At Dove, all of our anti-perspirant products deliver reliable all day protection against sweat and odour with a gentle formula, which cares for delicate underarm skin. We know that you want to make the best choices for your teenagers when it comes to the products they use on their skin. We want to hear what is important to you when it comes to selecting products for yourself and your teenagers!”

What deodorant do you buy and why? Did you buy a specific kind of deodorant for your child’s first one? Did you have a chat with your child on how and why they needed to start using it? Do you or your child prefer spray, roll-on or stick? Are there any scents you love or do you go for the ones without scents? What is the most important factor for you when buying a deodorant for yourself and/or your child? What about anti-mark deodorants?

Whatever you and/or your child’s experiences are around deodorant, share them on the thread below to be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

For my self i use the maxiumun streghth sure stick deodrants as i cant find anything else that stops me from sweating. My daughter is starting to reach the age where we will need to consider deodrant and what will be most important in deciding will be that it is free frim chemicals, it is sensitive and kind to skin, safe to use at a young age and has a mild fragrance. So dove will definitely be considered aling with simple and will ask for recommendations from friends and family.

I buy whatever is on special offer at the supermarket. I have a teenager. We haven’t got a favourite deodorant at the moment.

badgermum · 18/09/2018 15:39

I did a lot of research when my son first started needing a deodorant at age 11 as I was worried about him using something with to many chemicals, I decided I didn't want any product which contained aluminium and in the end found a soft and gentle 0% Aluminium spray Deodorant, he didn't like the roll ons as he found them too sticky whilst waiting for them to dry, and I had to purchase from the female deodorant section for him, it's fragrance free but I wouldn't mind a clean fresh fragrance, and he said would quite like a fruity fragrance. He uses the deodorant now everyday and I really wish there was a better choice for boys

southernsun · 18/09/2018 15:51

Our eldest started using deodorant a few months back and we went for a scent free roll on. I am quite active so personally use a 48hr protect spray but will normally choose whatever is on offer at the time.

cocochips · 18/09/2018 17:09

I use Dove and so does my daughter- we find it works for us

springer5 · 18/09/2018 17:31

Has to be a roll on - for environmental reasons. I use Simple, Dove, Sanex, Body Shop - what ever is available and/or on offer at the time and as natural as possible.

RiaOverTheRainbow · 18/09/2018 17:53

I use Mitchum roll on as it's by far the most effective deodorant I've tried. I like the unscented but I'm not picky about the scent.

MrBull · 18/09/2018 18:50

What deodorant do you buy and why? Sure roll-on, because it lasts a while, works well, doesn’t leave any marks.

Did you buy a specific kind of deodorant for your child’s first one? N/A - too young

Did you have a chat with your child on how and why they needed to start using it? N/A

Do you or your child prefer spray, roll-on or stick?
I prefer roll-on

Are there any scents you love or do you go for the ones without scents? Clean/fresh smells, nothing too sweet or floral

What is the most important factor for you when buying a deodorant for yourself and/or your child? That it is effective for a whole day, first and foremost.

What about anti-mark deodorants?
Yes, I like these versions, although think it’s more important for sprays.

suewilly · 18/09/2018 22:06

I have never in my life used deodorant and have never needed it. I bath or shower regularly and even in really hot times, such as when on holiday abroad, I never used it because I think that sweating is a natural bodily function and to try to restrict this is totally wrong.
Of course I don't want to smell of sweat but this has never been an issue. It's easy enough to shower or wash to ensure there is no body odour from sweat.
I never bought deodorant for my children either because I felt they should be able to make their own choice.
I do buy anti antiperspirant for my husband, because he asks me to, but if it was up to me I would simply tell him to sweat naturally and then wash it away.
I know this doesn't really fit in with the theme of this thread but I really do think that people focus too much on using products to make them smell clean instead of just washing as often as necessary.
(sorry!)

Crossfitgirl · 18/09/2018 23:13

I like the Dove stick deodorants, I avoid using sprays because it's bad for both the environment and my chest (hate breathing in a load of deodorant fumes!) And also there is no noise from the spray so no chance of it disturbing DH when I get up for work before him!

I used to use roll ons, and to be honest I think they do keep you a little drier, but waiting for it to dry with your arms in the air before getting dressed is annoying!

I do occasionally use Sure spray deoderant, but usually for freshening up such as if I'm going somewhere straight from work, rather than first thing in a morning.

decadance · 18/09/2018 23:16

I prefer a roll on usually buy Nivea, Sure or Dove, whatever is on special offer.
My son likes Lynx, he likes them all except the Africa one.

Lozzie60zA · 19/09/2018 06:31

I use Dove and Nivea regularly, preferring the spray. I find the roll on and stick quite sticky.

Eldest son prefers the roll on and regularly uses Dove. He keeps one in his locker at school, one in his football kit bag and numerous at home! The next in line uses Lynx.

I find Dove to be very gentle on the skin and none of us have ever suffered adverse affects.

tabbaz123 · 19/09/2018 07:40

I have tried so many different types and have my favourite scents that I like but at my age you really would think I would learn from my mistakes and the biggest one I make time and time ago is using a deodorant that stings after shaving! Grrrr

Skyejuly · 19/09/2018 10:16

My daughter uses roll on and prefers unscented.

rocketriffs · 19/09/2018 12:35

DS hates them. He doesn't like the perfumed smells. If he does need them then I would opt for an odourless option. He doesn't mind talc, but in all honesty he prefers the smell of his own farts.

bibolda · 19/09/2018 13:22

Dove does not protect me from whole day sweating. I love the cucumber products, they do refresh me, but I have to use it when I am on break and spray when I finish...minimum 3 times compare to one Nivea roll....but I do love the Dove scent better, just the lack of protection puts me off to change.

SlipperyLizard · 19/09/2018 16:34

DD doesn’t like the wetness of a roll in, so I’ve bought her a stick.

I use Mitchum as the only one that stops me stinking! I’d like to try the natural alternatives, but the potential for wasting my money puts me off!

Perhaps I’ll get one for DD.

Peregrane · 19/09/2018 16:37

I use MooGoo which is aluminium
free, and alternate it with a random assortment when I expect to sweat a lot as the MooGoo does not block the sweat glands, only stops one from smelling bad (a pro and a con at the same time).

sarahsnail · 19/09/2018 19:54

I remember my first deodorant and it was a "mum" roll on i remember feeling very grown up with this in my school bag :-)

I purchased "Sure" roll on when my DS started using deodorant, however he did not feel that this kept him dry and smelling nice so he prefers to use aerosol deodorants. We never discussed this i just started to add it into the weekly shopping and pass it on to him. The main thing that i looked for was a deodorant that would offer him long standing protection, as i would hate to think that he would "smell" whilst at school and playing sports.

Imgettingcheesefries · 19/09/2018 21:05

Me and dd use whichever spray deodorant is on offer at the time, usually sure or dove though. I've tried own brand deodorants a few times but usually regret it so stick with those 2 brands

SillyMoomin · 19/09/2018 21:07

I like a spray on, but it’s changedbover the years, as a teenager I used to use dove roll on, then changed to a cream, now I find I need a spray to last and keep my dry

CMOTDibbler · 19/09/2018 21:39

I use Mitchum roll on or gel as it is just so effective, though the roll on is terrible for white marks. I am particularly clumsy, and so non white mark deo is a must for me if its anything dark
DS alas, insists on Lynx which doesn't seem very good at smell prevention

FlowerPotMum · 19/09/2018 21:42

My teenager loves Dove. It smells clean and she also uses the matching soap. We've had the conversation about body spray and deodorant not being a substitute for good hygiene!

I use Mitchum or Sure. I love the smell of Dove but it's not strong enough for me.

nicsal05 · 19/09/2018 21:54

I like to use the roll on as I think it helps prevent the sweat patches, since I switched to dove I've noticed less sweat and build up of deodorant on my clothing, it also doesn't leave white marks when I put my clothes on which is a real bug bear on getting dressed for a night out !

funkyfreks · 20/09/2018 01:53

Dove feels more like a moisturising cream under my arms, I encouraged my 15 year old to use it also, especially after shaving because it leaves our under arms feeling silky smooth.
