Deodorant for a lot of people is a staple in their daily routine and there will come a time when you have to buy your child/children their first deodorant too, if you haven’t already! Therefore Dove would love to find out about all your experiences and preferences when it comes to deodorant for both your child and yourself.

Here’s what Dove have to say: “At Dove, all of our anti-perspirant products deliver reliable all day protection against sweat and odour with a gentle formula, which cares for delicate underarm skin. We know that you want to make the best choices for your teenagers when it comes to the products they use on their skin. We want to hear what is important to you when it comes to selecting products for yourself and your teenagers!”

What deodorant do you buy and why? Did you buy a specific kind of deodorant for your child’s first one? Did you have a chat with your child on how and why they needed to start using it? Do you or your child prefer spray, roll-on or stick? Are there any scents you love or do you go for the ones without scents? What is the most important factor for you when buying a deodorant for yourself and/or your child? What about anti-mark deodorants?

Whatever you and/or your child’s experiences are around deodorant, share them on the thread below to be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

Mitchum. Because it works!

I buy mitchum spray. It’s the only one that really works and I love the scent.

Did you buy a specific kind of deodorant for your child’s first one?

I can’t remember buying my ds’s first deodorant, he’s nearly 18! What age do they start needing it?!

Do you or your child prefer spray, roll-on or stick?

I prefer a spray as I spray it all over and it dries a lot quicker. If I go on holiday however I take a stick as it’s smaller

Are there any scents you love or do you go for the ones without scents?

I love the ‘powder fresh’ scent by Mitchum. It’s not too overbearing and just smells clean

What is the most important factor for you when buying a deodorant for yourself and/or your child?

It has to work properly (some don’t do anything)
What about anti-mark deodorants?
They’re great! Nothing worse than having to get hanged after getting ready because of all the white marks!

DS uses a stick deodorant. Roll ons 'take too long to dry' apparently (he's not the most patient!) and they are not allowed sprays in their school sports bag.

Tend to buy whatever is on offer but look for 'kinder' ones and usually unscented. I am quite prepared for us to be assaulted by Lynx in a couple of years.

girlandboy · 14/09/2018 11:29

I've started using Ice Guard which is a solid stick of crystal.
I was dubious that it would work seeing as Mitchum and other strong brands didn't work on me.
However, it's brilliant, as long as I rub it on for about 30 seconds per armpit.
I now hardly sweat even though it's not an antiperspirant and I don't smell at all. Not even of me! I smell of nothing!

And it's VERY economical. I reckon this one stick should last at least a year.

I think it's cucumber Dove we use - a roll on, as it's better for the environment
I've advised to tray and keep the choice to neutral and natural to prevent any potential related illnesses

I always use Dove spray deodorant as I find this works best for me and lasts all day. I don't really like roll on as it feels sticky and takes ages to dry. I did buy roll-on for my daughter's first deodorant but she preferred to sneak my Dove spray!!

grantd1 · 14/09/2018 16:10

Lynx all the way

InTheNavy · 14/09/2018 16:46

I use Driclor myself and buy whatever is on offer from the men's ranges for DSs (16 &11).
Younger doesn't need it yet but as he's now at secondary, it won't be long. I told him i'd bought him one if he wanted to use it and just left it with his school uniform where he gets dressed in the morning.
Prefer roll on- and if taken to school for use after PE it HAS to be roll on. They can't be trusted with aerosol sprays - and they're thoroughly unpleasant in crowded changing rooms.
Had to explain the different roles of anti- perspirant and deodorant

Overeggedit · 14/09/2018 17:07

I buy whatever is on offer - I've certainly used Dove in the past, but currently it's Sure (which was discounted). I always get a spray - can't stand waiting for roll ons to dry - but I also by the solid stick ones for travelling (as I always take just hand luggage on flights for work trips, so I try to keep liquids to a minimum). Main consideration is price, then effectiveness. But I do like to also consider environmental factors, and have considered looking at deodorants that have less packaging.

SoftBlocks · 14/09/2018 17:30

Mitchum unscented, Bionsen stick or any that is supposed to not leave white marks. Always stick or roll on.

I used to use spray on deodorant as a teenager and remember almost choking on the fumes at school after PE lessons when everyone was spraying it into the air at the same time.

NerrSnerr · 14/09/2018 19:04

I buy whatever deodorant is on offer. When my daughter gets to that age I'll let her choose whenever she feels ready.

TiggersAngel7774 · 14/09/2018 19:22

my son is 10 and we trying to get him into habit as some days he needs it.
He likes it but not routine for him yet

user1485629191 · 14/09/2018 20:56

My children have always watched me use deodorant, so they knew why it was used, i also tried to buy gentle ones for the teenagers

columbine75 · 14/09/2018 21:03

We’re not quite there yet (eldest is 8 going on 13....), but I was planning on a natural deodorant for her first. I’m quite the sweaty Betty, haven’t tried dove for ages, I normally use Mitchum.

ShouldofWouldofCouldof · 14/09/2018 22:04

My daughters started smelling quite young 7/8. They both noticed this themselves and asked to use mine. I let them choose their own, they both chose a roll on. My eldest uses nivea and my youngest has dove original. Some times they chose a different on based on scent but mainly stick to what they know. They dont like sprays though!

I flip between dove and sure. I feel like at certain time of the month I smell differently so want a harder working deodorant (sure).

My Dds aren't old enough to use or need deodorant yet, but they do comment on the scent. It's unanimous that daddy's is too strong, with makes us all cough. My eldest likes the smell of dove and when she's ready it will be the one I get for her, as i think it will gentle on her skin.

DearPrudence · 15/09/2018 16:51

I have a super-clean teenager - he started using Sure or any other brand of 48 hour stick aged 16. Chosen as it's the same type used by me and his Dad. I like the stick type as you don't have to so wait for them to dry and it doesn't cloud up the room like a spray. No white marks is important to me.

Jenniferb21 · 15/09/2018 20:09

I love the roll ons but really like the cucumber scented dove spray too.

My little boy uses dove as he has sensitive skin but occasionally he likes to wear lynx like his daddy and he loves the scents.

emmamcmahon · 15/09/2018 20:14

My eldest was given a David Beckham gift set one Christmas and that was his first aerosol deodorant. He really liked it but we couldn’t find it again so he started using Sure like his Dad until the shop stocked the DB one again. He seems to think it’s an all in one room freshner, deodorant, shower replacement though, as sometimes you can taste it in the air around him not just smell it!! Xx

Jeffingandeffing · 15/09/2018 21:55

I use Mitchum as I sweat terribly! When my daughter reached her teens she tried lots of ‘kinder’ deoderants but eventually ended up using Mitchum too.

SouthWestmom · 15/09/2018 22:04

Prefer roll on to spray - they always seem to dry weirdly and flake off (grim!)

Have that half naked thing every day as I put roll on on and then wait for it to dry

Have bought all the dc roll ons - teenage boys can stink so I'm trying to get them into good habits and not just lathering on after shave 😂

HerRoyalFattyness · 16/09/2018 13:33

Ive started using native unearthed deoderant balm.

Its a lot gentler than others and doesn't irritate my sensitive under arm skin like some other apparently sensitive deoderants.
My DC are still too young for it yet, but i will buy whatever works for them.

Bacere · 16/09/2018 13:45

I prefer sprays but use roll on for many years now as my skin wasn't happy with spray Sad. I switch between Dove and another make so does the family. Hate the waiting for it to dry if I am in a rush and have forgotten to apply it earlier. Family not fussed apart from not being keen on sprays because of the lingering smell.

Frogletmamma · 16/09/2018 15:25

Both myself and DH use the same-Sure cotton dry as it is nice and neutral. Doesn't cause irritation or marks. DD is 11 and is getting greasier and sweatier by the day. She will probably use the same. But we haven't had the talk yet...Darling...

Kittensgalore · 16/09/2018 16:04

I use a sure roll on. Occasionally try something else that is on special but always return to Sure. Dd hasn’t needed one but will do very soon. I guess I will look for something kind to her young skin and that is a deodorant rather than anti p.
