Deodorant for a lot of people is a staple in their daily routine and there will come a time when you have to buy your child/children their first deodorant too, if you haven’t already! Therefore Dove would love to find out about all your experiences and preferences when it comes to deodorant for both your child and yourself.

Here’s what Dove have to say: “At Dove, all of our anti-perspirant products deliver reliable all day protection against sweat and odour with a gentle formula, which cares for delicate underarm skin. We know that you want to make the best choices for your teenagers when it comes to the products they use on their skin. We want to hear what is important to you when it comes to selecting products for yourself and your teenagers!”

What deodorant do you buy and why? Did you buy a specific kind of deodorant for your child’s first one? Did you have a chat with your child on how and why they needed to start using it? Do you or your child prefer spray, roll-on or stick? Are there any scents you love or do you go for the ones without scents? What is the most important factor for you when buying a deodorant for yourself and/or your child? What about anti-mark deodorants?

Whatever you and/or your child’s experiences are around deodorant, share them on the thread below to be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

DS's (14) "experiences around deodorant" are too few and far between. He's at that age. He's starting to get it though and uses Lynx style highly scented roll ons for special occasions. My preference would be for something more neutral, more often.

CopperKettle11 · 12/09/2018 23:15

I remember my Mum first pointing out to me that I may need deodorant - she came back with a ‘Mumm’ Branded one! It was a roll on and I’ve continued with roll ons ever since.

I’d like to think that at the time when my daughter will need deodorant, I’ll suggest a roll on but ultimate it’ll be up to her to find one that works for her body.

My experience is that these are no substitute for keeping clean and fresh. Don't use them as a cover-up and avoid those sticky armpits.
Don;t use sprays - they go everywhere and you lose half the product.

MammaSchwifty · 13/09/2018 08:20

Dove or sanex sticks. I like the dove invisible one, and I like the sanex one because it's aluminium free. I prefer sticks because they are neat, have a nice texture on the skin, take one swipe and last all day, and seem compact and packaging efficient for the amount of use you get - they last ages unlike spray cans where they only last a couple of weeks and then generate a bulky metal can as waste.

MiniTheMinx · 13/09/2018 08:38

Don't use it in winter at all I don't sweat. I'm a dry person. DH doesn't either. DS1 doesn't. DS2 aged 13 does and he's using some Jack Wills stuff that smells quite yummy.

In summer I wear Dove roll on if I remember.

TigerTeatimes · 13/09/2018 09:31

Pit rock or a Lush bar or powder. Keep things as natural and breathable as possible.

cluckyhen · 13/09/2018 10:25

I struggle terribly with finding a deodorant that works! I find that roll ons take forever to dry, sprays always leave white marks and generically I must just be sweaty as none of them keep me dry which means I have to be selective on the tops I wear.

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 13/09/2018 10:58

I am another who struggles to find a deodorant that works so I never tend to stick to a specific brand. I do like American deodorant "secrets" though, so tend to stock up when I am travelling.

The harsher deodorants also tend to upset my skin and just be painful and itchy.

I also only like stick creams or gels and roll ons stay so wet forever and spray isn't hard working enough.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 13/09/2018 12:43

Mitchum antiperspirant doesn't dry immediately, @cluckyhen, but it does dry pretty quickly in my experience - and it works like a dream, keeping my armpits properly dry, without leaving marks on my clothing - I can highly recommend it. I use the unfragranced one, and then my own choice of perfume.

dementedpixie · 13/09/2018 13:00

Mitchum takes hours to dry and I don't rate it at all

MummyBtothree · 13/09/2018 15:58

My son's use Sure anti perspirant spray, as do I although we don't use the no white marks variety as we find that it is less effective at keeping niffs at bay.

Lalala2018 · 13/09/2018 16:28

My sister suffered with body odour when she hit puberty, to combat this, my mum used mitchum and it just stuck with me.

MrsS1980 · 13/09/2018 17:32

I've started using Mitchum as it seems to last all day. My little boy is 7 and has inherited his dad's sweatiness so managing with daily showers at the moment but realistically going to have to start looking at deodorants soon I think.

feedmecoffee · 13/09/2018 18:31

Always buy roll on, lasts way longer than spray on and I find it more effective. I buy whatever is on offer at the supermarket, always go for brands though, Mitchum, Sanex and Dove are my top 3 hardly go for any other makes.

mitalmanda · 13/09/2018 18:38

I've relied on deodorant's and bodyspray's for many years, when my hormones first kicked in I'd have terrible greasy skin and sweats, and when I used to get nervous I'd sweat so much. Now older I'm not as bad but still very keen, on as well as daily cleanliness, using body spray and deodorant. I don't personally like the feel of roll ons so use a spray, and it's normally a 48hr version and whatever's on offer, even using a men's version which I find is more effective. I used to buy the anti-white mark version when I had a social life, but not important anymore and my little black dress retired a long time ago for many reasons. My daughter seems to have developed without my noticing or expecting the changes, as well as body changes she's starting to sweat. I've bought her an age appropriate roll on which is skin kind, I didn't want her breathing in spray fumes and at 10yrs the roll on is smaller to use. And when she wants a body spray for some added scent, I've been using the new wet type pump sprays. I do like Dove, but use different brands, I like the scents and original version which smells like the soaps.

tillymint21 · 13/09/2018 19:12

I use Mitchum unscented, either in roll-on or block form, as I hate the smell of deodorant and like any perfume I wear to be unaffected by fragrances from other products. My daughters tended to start using light aerosol deodorants with fragrance but have all gradually moved onto Mitchum like me as it does such a great job. They prefer the fragranced Mitchum, as opposed to the unscented.

wordsmithereens · 13/09/2018 19:40

I love Nivea if I can find it on offer somewhere (smell reminds me of my childhood), but I have used Dove, Sure, Soft & Gentle and others in the past. I tend to rotate to go with whatever brand is on offer to save as much money as possible. I prefer sprays, but find they don't last as long, so if I'm not going to be as active I may keep a roll-on around. Anti-white mark is pretty much a must, occasionally I (accidentally) get a non-anti white mark one and am annoyed with myself as I find it all over my tops after putting it on in the morning!

I prefer spray and currently use the sure invisible one. My husband uses a mixture of a sure spray on and a stronger stick.

My first deodorant was a roll on (Mum - do they still make it?!) and I will probably start with roll ons for my DDs too when the time comes.

fishnships · 13/09/2018 20:37

I also prefer a roll-on, being prone to asthma but DS needs a strong one - Mitchum works well. He comes home sweating profusely after rugger!

Cotswoldmama · 13/09/2018 21:33

I generally buy what on offer and look out for ones that say they don’t leave white marks on clothes. My boys are too young for deodorant but I’m quite looking forward to the teenage years! But I’m sure I’ll introduced them to deodorant before then

StickChildNumberTwo · 13/09/2018 22:34

I used spray for years, then bought some where the spray itself didn't work and switched to roll on. I tend to buy whatever's on offer, and try and find scents I find inoffensive. I hate over-smelly ones, on me and other people.

kkhimji · 13/09/2018 22:47

Better to use shower gel lol

androbbob · 14/09/2018 01:42

Generally use Sure spray but not the compressed one as doesn't seem to last as long. Usually buy same for DD who is 16. Get the invisible one or the blue one.

DS is 11 and sporty so need to buy him one now - will try the Dove one for men after reading this - dont need Lynx smell here!

I prefer spray but have previously tried roll on and stick deodrant

BusterGonad · 14/09/2018 06:17

I use soap and then PitRok as I've given up on deodorant as my under arms are too tender for it now! I feel a lot happier, and my clothes are no longer getting ruined by thick deodorant staining.
