Trying to conceive can be straightforward for some and a struggle for others. From deciding to start the process of trying to conceive to the emotions that surround the journey, it can feel like quite an overwhelming time. Proceive would love to hear your experiences of trying to conceive and how the TTC chat came about with your significant other.

Here’s what Proceive has to say: “Embarking on the TTC journey is emotive for many people and for many different reasons, we are keen to know what emotions were stirred up when you and your partner decided it was time to start trying for a baby. We know the average time for a couple to conceive is 12 months but we want to hear from you and find out about your experiences and feelings around this time in your life.”

What were your expectations of trying to conceive and how did they compare with the reality? What changes did you make, for example around your lifestyle or diet, when you decided to try to conceive? How did you and your partner agree to start trying to conceive? Or did you find that when you stopped trying, it just happened?

Whatever your experiences of trying to conceive, share them on the thread below to be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

If you would like to be in with the chance of winning 3 months worth of Proceive, then please click here

Thanks and good luck

I guess I was the lucky ones - I got pregnant almost as soon as I came off the pill although I hadn't realised it I sadly had a miscarriage very early on but fell again within a month.

MrsFrTedCrilly · 19/07/2018 18:33

I remember being so surprised after spending my adult life avoiding pregnancy finding it so difficult to get pregnant.
It took a while and it’s not all been plain sailing but we got there. I am forever grateful for my children.

Lindseymorris29 · 19/07/2018 18:59

With my first it took about 7 months using Ovulation sticks. With my second it was over a year and a half, with ovulation sticks proseed, diet and vitamins. We were giving it till the end of the year after seeing a Dr and then the magic happened in Sep. So I now have one of each, and I know exactly how lucky I am. I do believe stress has a lot to answer for, but unfortunately the longer it is taking and the more negative tests you get the more stressed and helpless you feel.

The first time we conceived we weren’t really trying. I came off my pill the day we got married and planned to let my body be hormone free and my cycles to regulate before trying to conceive but ended up pregnant about 9 months later so it was sort of an accident but one waiting to happen!
The second time I came off my pill on my first sons sevond birthday. Because of the cost of child care we wanted about a three year gap so that my first son would be getting his 15 hours free childcare. Our plan worked perfectly and there’s 3 years and 3 days between them! Both times after coming off the pill I took them herb Agnus Castus which helped regulate and shorten my cycles after coming off the pill. I can’t remember how long they were when I came off the pill the first time but eventually they evened our to 31 days. With my second after my initial withdrawal bleed I got to 70 days with no period so took agnus castus and wishing 3 days my period came. The next chckd was about 35 days and I fell pregnant on my third cycle after coming off the pill.
I feel very lucky to have been able to conceive so easily as I know many others who have struggled. Good luck to those trying to conceive at the moment x x

I’m very aware of how lucky I am in that both my children were conceived in the first month of trying. Was a bit of a shock though when the first pregnancy test came up positive as it’s quite a big deal to even start trying and we’d barely got our heads round the idea of it. I was certain anyway as my body felt so different but my then partner (now DH) thought I was getting ahead of myself! Same thing the second time. Again, I am fully aware of how lucky we are!!!

boo2410 · 19/07/2018 20:52

I was 38 when I fell pregnant. I had been on the pill for many many years and I thought that and age were against me. After the deed I used to lay on the bed with my feet up the wall for about 20 minutes just to try and help things along. I was pregnant within 3 months and was so surprised, and a little shocked!!! Now the labour....totally different story Shock Shock

We weren't really trying but it happened pretty quickly and I immediately started taking pregnancy vitamins and quit smoking right after doing the test - which was really easy, despite having smoked for 20+ years. I was aware that my mum and nan both smoked right up till having kids so I thought I'd prob be the same (I intended to be but still worried it'd be hard, I knew I'd stop no matter what but was scared of having cravings but luckily - psychosomatic or what - I had none whatsoever!). DD is now 21 months, I'm still breastfeeding and never felt a need to smoke again since. Now thinking about having 2nd bubbs so I'm taking folic acid just in case - I want to be fully prepared this time!

Headfullofdreams · 20/07/2018 08:05

It didn't take very long in the scheme of things but at the time every month felt like a year.

abitoflight · 20/07/2018 08:39

31 with my first pregnancy and 35 with my second. Both on second month of TTC which really surprised me

MrsRobert · 20/07/2018 09:04

I had to come off meds for 6 months before trying to conceive so that was hell but was very surprised that I got pregnant on the first cycle at 31.

poopoopoo · 20/07/2018 13:02

I changed my job, reduced my working hours and improved my diet, had more sex!

Treaclespongeandcustard · 20/07/2018 13:42

Ovulation kits a plenty and iron rich foods to enhance the uterine lining. We tried most things!! Grin

IndianaMoleWoman · 20/07/2018 21:36

We tried for two years, during which time I had two miscarriages. We then used a conception lubricant and conceived our eldest child. We were concerned about taking a long time to successfully conceive again, so started when eldest turned one. Used the lube again and conceived our youngest on the first attempt!

Logic tells me this is all coincidental but we’ll never know; our family is complete!

BuntyII · 20/07/2018 23:58

First cycle I tried for a few months then started slimming world and typically fell that month.
Second time I conceived on cycle 2 but it ended in a miscarriage that I am still recovering from mentally.
I'm not sure I'll ever hop on the TTC bandwagon with such gusto again. We won't use contraception and will see what happens but I won't be charting or testing early etc - I hope.

BuntyII · 21/07/2018 00:03

As for the conversation with DH, it basically went him saying If you want a baby we'll have one, and that was that. Nothing too exciting to report there, it's not like in the films!

Scotgirl80 · 21/07/2018 00:13

Started TTC on wedding night. Used ovulation sticks, went to see a fertility specialist who recommended I gain some weight. After 3 years of trying, finally decided to start IVF however wanted one last holiday before we stared treatment. Fell pregnant on holiday Smile

Tortycat · 21/07/2018 00:22

I thought I might struggle to conceive as i was late 30s, but conceived second month of trying. Sadly i had a m/c. Took 9 months after that with ovulation kits, temping, tracking on an app and acupuncture to get pregnant again, then another m/c which was devastating. I found the whole process so stressful and ruined our sex life. Luckily 3rd and 4th pregnancies were quite quick and now have 2 amazing children. Still think about the ones that didnt make it though.

Treacletoots · 21/07/2018 07:17

Did anyone catch the CARE fertility web chat recently? Several people asked whether these types of products actually helped them conceive and the experts said there was no medical evidence.

How does proceive feel about selling a product to a vulnerable audience just to make a profit?

CommonFishDiseases · 21/07/2018 19:09

Tracked ovulation when TTC using an app on my phone, but didn't overthink it. Got pregnant within 1-2 months each time. Big believer in not stressing out about it all (I know that's easy for me to say).

jhb2013 · 21/07/2018 19:23

First time TTC it was easier than expected and we were pregnant within a few weeks. Second time was much harder and it gave me a real insight into the pain of not being able to conceive as all our conversations became about when we should try, what positions we should use, what we should be eating/drinking etc. We used ovulation apps and the peeing on the sticks thing. Luckily we now have two DD’s and have decided that although we’d love 3 children that we don’t want to go through that stress again. So we are going to be happy with our lovely family of 4!

Chocodrops · 21/07/2018 21:29

We have been together for a decade and knew we wanted children but decided to wait until I graduated from my masters and was settled in my new post-qualifying job for a few months. When the time finally came around I had lots of anxiety about whether we would be able to conceive, but I needn't have worried. We were successful after 3 cycles and on the first cycle of using OPKs - we found out I was ovulated a few days later than expected. Now 11 weeks and counting :)

In the run up we both started taking a conception vitamin and in the 2 week window(s) I stopped drinking. I also changed my usual gym workouts and started a TTC gym program.

Twiglet2353 · 22/07/2018 21:18

Still on our TTC journey. Blocked Fallopian tube, endometriosis and anovulatory cycles means we're likely in for the long haul. In between hospital appointments to discuss what we do next.

Prior to these diagnoses we used Preseed, tried the Sperm Meets Egg Plan, and used OPKs. This month I'm temping as it's my first cycle since my laparoscopy and I am hoping it may encourage ovulation this month 🤞

DaisyChops · 22/07/2018 21:47

I've been pregnant 3 times and I fell pregnant really quickly for 2 of these, each time my weight was quite low so I think it is definitely linked.

I tried for 6 months the 2nd time and got pregnant after making an effort to lose weight and using ovulation tests.

MrsAlwaysRight · 22/07/2018 23:07

Other than taking pre natal vitamins prior to coming off the pill, I didn't make any changes to my lifestyle. Fell pregnant both times within 1-3 weeks of finishing the pill. We had assumed it would probably take several months and were somewhat surprised! 2nd time I had bought ovulation tests in preparation but didn't need to use them in the end.

JustDoOne · 23/07/2018 02:29

We were extremely lucky and conceived all of our 5 planned DC almost immediately. I had 1 miscarriage between 4 and 5 which rocked me as I'd become a little bit complacent I think. I still found the process stressful though and became a bit of a POAS addict. Also, sex when you're doing it to try to make a baby isn't very relaxed and it was kind of a relief when we could go back to just doing it for fun!
