Mumsnet users' tips for making clothes smell great

NOW CLOSED

It can be difficult to ensure that clothes always smell good - especially if you have messy toddlers or teenagers that leave P.E kit in bags for weeks. Fairy Non Bio would like you to share your tips for making sure your clothes smell great.

Here’s what Fairy Non Bio has to say: “At Fairy Non Bio, we know that even if you have very sensitive skin, you still want that freshly washed smell on your clothes and fabrics. We have perfected our formula on our detergents and fabric conditioner so that you don’t have to compromise on either. We want to know your tips for great smelling clothes!”

Do you have a way of storing your clothes that means they don’t pick up nasty odours between wash and wear? Maybe your family has a laundry routine that prevents clothes from ever reaching a smelly stage? Perhaps you have a favourite product that’s become your family’s signature clothing scent?

Whatever tips for making sure clothes smell great, share them on the thread below and you will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher for a store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

Line drying and lavendar sachetsSmile

TweetleBeetlesBattle · 24/05/2018 20:36

Line dry definitely, they are just fresher.

xcxcsophiexcxc · 24/05/2018 20:55

I keep an air freshener in my wardrobe 😂

We've been using Fairy original softener for years as our children have sensitive skin and the only one that dosnt aggravate my partner's sinuses. The smell is not overpowering like other brands. The fresh subtle scent is long lasting; better than all artificial airfreshnersGrin. Our eldest is now at uni and says she loves her sheets smelling of home .

EsmeeMerlin · 24/05/2018 21:44

I like to dry washing outside when possible and we also use lenor unstoppable which smell lovely. I also put my partner's work clothes in a separate wash, he works long hours in a manual job and his clothes stink!

Line drying and keeping the machine clean (service washes!)

Doobydoo · 24/05/2018 22:10

I use Ecover and Fairy. Line dry when possible or on clothes horse and quick tumble dry.

Headfullofdreams · 24/05/2018 22:30

Drying outside is the best smell!

totallyLosingIt · 24/05/2018 22:33

Outside line dried clothes have the best smell. And the clothes get properly dry too. If there is even a hint of dampness then I pop the clothes in the airing cupboard for a couple of days before putting them away.
I'm lying in freshly washed bedding right now 😃

ShatnersBassoon · 24/05/2018 22:40

I don't think there's any particular trick to it. Biological powder is my preference for best stain and smell removal. Line dried when possible.

MrsFrTedCrilly · 24/05/2018 22:52

Dry it outside, and get it put away when it’s nice and dry. Do not allow your washing to be darked on!!!

JellySlice · 24/05/2018 23:01

I use unfragranced products (allergies ) and find that clothes smell absolutely the best when they have line-dried outdoors on a sunny day - as long as nobody's lighting a fire anywhere near!

In winter I sometimes add a little lavender essential oil to my unfragranced fabric conditioner, and I often have home-made pomanders containing whole herbs or spices in the wardrobes and drawers.

springbluebells · 24/05/2018 23:16

My Nana taught me to keep a bar of nice smelling soap in my draw... I've kept the family tradition going and I'm sure she would be proud that my undergarments smell divine!

Snog · 25/05/2018 06:28

Laundry spray when you do the ironing

DollyLlama · 25/05/2018 07:24

I make sure clothes get a good airing and periodically empty my wardrobe to give clothes some air, especially ones I don't wear often.

Also lavender packs in drawers are lovely.

AlfieandAnnieRose · 25/05/2018 07:42

The washing machine is the one doing all the hard work so I always take care of it. I make sure I air it after use so no moisture builds up, i clean around the rubber rim and the draw.
This all stops germs building up and the washing machine becoming smelly and transferring onto our clothes!

Treaclespongeandcustard · 25/05/2018 09:14

I always use fairy non bio with a little dash of softner too. I try to line dry where I can and my washing always feels soft and smells fresh for ages. Fairy non bio usually works wonders on nursery scribbles and mud pies too.

NeverTwerkNaked · 25/05/2018 12:13

Hanging them on the line to dry! I love the smell of line dried clothes

CoffeeOrSleep · 25/05/2018 12:18

dry outside if you can. Also if you can't, dry indoors, and as soon as there's a bit of sunshine, hang outside for a bit.

stickladilove · 25/05/2018 16:03

Line drying lovely and fresh smell

IndianaMoleWoman · 25/05/2018 19:46

Getting it dried on the line seems to make washing extra fresh and, weirdly, somehow seems to reduce stains sometimes too.

ShootingQuadrantids · 25/05/2018 19:55

About once a month I run an empty washing load at 90 degrees. Kills all the nasties lurking inside. I have psoriasis so Fairy non-Bio is the only fabric wash that I can use. I love that I can wash as low as 20 degrees too.

Theimpossiblegirl · 25/05/2018 20:03

I always try to dry things outside, especially bedding and towels.
Add Zoflora to my washing.
Also, run a maintenance wash every so often to keep the machine fresh.

Goingovertosusanshouse · 26/05/2018 09:36

White vingegar and zoflora. Regularly clean machine and line dry when possible.
