A good night's sleep is something many of us long to have, and would go to great lengths to get. That’s why Dreams would like to know your top tips and successful methods for getting a great night’s sleep, whether that’s perfecting the temperature in your bedroom or a never fail tactic to keep children in their rooms.

Here’s what Dreams has to say: “At Dreams, we understand the importance of a great night’s sleep and we know this can seem like an impossible challenge for new parents or parents to be. That’s why we’re delighted to be working with Mumsnet and its community of parents to help you get the sleep you deserve.”

Do you have a routine that helps you to relax before bed so that you drift off easily - a relaxing bath or a no-phones period? Perhaps you have arranged your bedding so that it’s comfortable for both you and your partner? Maybe ear plugs have revolutionised your sleep or you meditate before bed to stop you overthinking and worrying about things? Do you avoid certain things like coffee or eating late at night or maybe you have a particular hot drink or music to listen to that works a treat?

Whatever you do to help you improve your quality of sleep please share it below. Everyone who leaves a comment will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

I am not that good sleeper but I am trying hard to find solution to improve my sleep. I have started going to bed around 10pm avoiding drinks and food approx 1 hour before. Keeping myself stress - free and not doing exercises just before bed. Trying to avoid having my mobile phone in close distance. I don't like too hot and drawn curtains is must for me. I am comfortable sleeping on one pillow only.

pinkjjf27 · 22/02/2018 01:01

I have to have a very dark silent room I have black out curtains . no clocks ticking, no chargers buzzing, I have just brought all new pillows for every one and I am working on buying new duvets and mattress this year too. I like a heavy duvet on top of me and cotton sheets. I suffer from a painful leg at night so I have a heat pad against it to ease the pain as much as i can.

Dottypolka · 22/02/2018 06:50

Blackout curtains, a dot of lavender oil on my pillow and quiet :)

babba2014 · 22/02/2018 06:55

I try to eat well before sleeping and I avoid tea or it keeps me up due to loo trips and caffeine.
I've had struggles with good sleep so my go to tips are to find a good mattress. We bought a cheap soft one once and I didn't realise how good I had it at my parents. A good medium firmness mattress is great for good sleep.
I also chose a nice fabric headboard so it's soft on my back when I lean on it when I'm unwell and can't lie down. A metal one tends to hurt.
Lastly get a really good pillow. Memory foam ones are great. They can make all the difference to good sleep. Double up pillows if you need to.

I turn my mobile phone off at 8 pm nowadays and wind down by having a bath and reading a book. I have also started drinking a glass of water before bed which has helped m sleep routine.

For myself, Its got to be a dark room. I can't bear for any light to be coming into the room. Silence is also top of the list too. A comfortable mattress, medium soft pillows and a lovely fluffy quilt. You can't beat slipping into bed when the bedding has just been changed too. Bliss!

redjoker · 22/02/2018 10:22

Don't have children! 😉

MargoLovebutter · 22/02/2018 11:55

Do you have a routine that helps you to relax before bed so that you drift off easily - a relaxing bath or a no-phones period?
Not really. I'm knackered by bed time, so I don't need any help drifting off.

Perhaps you have arranged your bedding so that it’s comfortable for both you and your partner?
I use the Cool Comfort bedding from M&S, which I really like. Much prefer it to 100% cotton.

Maybe ear plugs have revolutionised your sleep or you meditate before bed to stop you overthinking and worrying about things?
I live in a noisy urban area, so at night I turn on a traditional desk top fan & the white noise blocks out any outside noise.

Do you avoid certain things like coffee or eating late at night or maybe you have a particular hot drink or music to listen to that works a treat?
Never drink coffee after lunchtime, as it has such a profound effect on me. Other than that, not really.

Lots of Lavender scent and a cool room x

mishknight · 22/02/2018 15:07

a good routine (this counts for children and adults) in order to prepare you body and mind for sleep. turning off all electronic devices and screens at least half an hour before intending ti go to sleep

Firewall · 22/02/2018 16:26

A super comfy mattress, kids sleeping! A nice hot chocolate and book.

Wolfcub · 22/02/2018 17:35

I have lots of problems sleeping so these are my top tips over years of trying everything:

Cool room with an open window (vented)
Eye mask to block out light
Good quality ear plugs to block out noise
Magnesium citrate before bed
Pillow spray - I like loccitaine but only use this when I’m struggling
Sleep app if things are really bad to help build a good sleep pattern again

slithytove · 22/02/2018 19:56

No screens
Hair tied back
Lovely cool room
Clean bedding on a bed which has been made
No children
Pitch black

bcd2009 · 22/02/2018 20:30

I give the bedroom a good airing before bedtime and try to avoid late screen time in the evenings.

lolamia91 · 22/02/2018 21:13

a nice long bath with a glass of red Wine!

PinotAndPlaydough · 22/02/2018 21:16

A pitch black room, I like the window slightly open regardless of the time of year as I think a bit of fresh air helps me sleep better but I don’t like being cold so a thick duvet and hot water bottle in the winter are a must.

HattiesPincushion · 23/02/2018 08:02

Having the windows locked open a crack to keep the room fresh and cool but not cold, blackout curtains, a super king sized bed so we each have enough space, a memory foam mattress so my husband turning over in the night doesn't disturb me and a sheep wool duvet help me to sleep better.

wizbit93 · 23/02/2018 08:11

I have a no phones rule after 8.30pm. I go to bed at 10pm and read for ten minutes or so. I like a dark room and a fleece blanket over my duvet, pulled up so I'm nice and cosy.

ppast · 23/02/2018 10:34

An under pillow microphone playing radio 4. Neither music, podcasts or audiobooks do it for me - they make me want to little not snooze. Talk radio is perfect!

mum25littleones · 23/02/2018 10:44

I find a spritz of lavender and chamomile room spray helps send me off on a night. Clean sheets and a decent mattress are essential as is a nice warm bath just before bedtime 💕

Lavender spray and a white noise app

Beeziekn33ze · 23/02/2018 20:03

Definitely lavender, no screens or radio, but a few pages of a book. Nothing exciting! My current read is a collection of short pieces by Sue Townsend, just the thing to make me drift off peacefully.

cuppawithbiccies · 23/02/2018 20:54

I have to have a dark room and quiet. The ceiling fan is a must in summer as can't abide a warm room. Also try to relax with a book before bedtime
