A good night's sleep is something many of us long to have, and would go to great lengths to get. That’s why Dreams would like to know your top tips and successful methods for getting a great night’s sleep, whether that’s perfecting the temperature in your bedroom or a never fail tactic to keep children in their rooms.

Here’s what Dreams has to say: “At Dreams, we understand the importance of a great night’s sleep and we know this can seem like an impossible challenge for new parents or parents to be. That’s why we’re delighted to be working with Mumsnet and its community of parents to help you get the sleep you deserve.”

Do you have a routine that helps you to relax before bed so that you drift off easily - a relaxing bath or a no-phones period? Perhaps you have arranged your bedding so that it’s comfortable for both you and your partner? Maybe ear plugs have revolutionised your sleep or you meditate before bed to stop you overthinking and worrying about things? Do you avoid certain things like coffee or eating late at night or maybe you have a particular hot drink or music to listen to that works a treat?

Whatever you do to help you improve your quality of sleep please share it below. Everyone who leaves a comment will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

I find the best thing is to have a shower before bed, clean pyjamas and fresh bed sheets. Obviously, that isn't realistic every night so I also make sure I have time to read every night and put the technology off an hour before bedtime.

plenty of fresh air in the bedroom, and a routine. babies and children need a routine and so do we

cheekychicken24 · 19/02/2018 19:40

I have to have a warm bed, but a cold room. I can't sleep if it's stuffy - I have an electric blanket to pre-heat the bed, but have the window open for fresh air!

ThenBellaDidSomethingVeryKind · 19/02/2018 19:43

Good sleep hygiene. Bedtimes/waking up times roughly the same every day. No cheeky daytime naps, no matter how tired/jet lagged. I also don’t drink anything caffeinated after noon. Cured my insomnia!

A dark, cool-ish room with snuggly, soft and warm bedding. A pillow spray always seems like an indulgence - especially if it is a lavender scent.

Also a nice warm bubble bath before bed always makes my body ready for sleep.

Mozarmstrong · 19/02/2018 20:11

One pillow only now. Dark room no central heating I get too warm. Like to think nice thoughts hols etc works for me

I find focusing on my breathing helps, so breathing in for a count of 5 and then breathing out for a count of 5

A little while reading my Kindle paperwhite usually does the trick if I'm struggling to drop off, only I end up waking up at 2am with it on my face!

charw92 · 19/02/2018 20:18

I try and not go on my phone or watch TV before falling asleep , instead reading some of my book. I find having blackout blinds also helps, as well as a boyfriend that doesn't snore and sticks to his side of the bed!

CGORST · 19/02/2018 20:20

There are a few things - the bedroom door is closed and all the lights are off and then, once I'm in bed, the most important part of the routine is...... listening to The Archers on the iplayer. I know it seems random but don't knock it until you've tried it. It's on for 15 minutes then I'm off to the land of nod!

Rachdayan · 19/02/2018 20:21

I've ued lavendar pillow spray for the last 12 months and it really works. I was sceptical at first but it has a real calming soothing effect and i'm off to sleep within minutes.

Marg2k8 · 19/02/2018 20:22

Make sure you have a good pillow as well as a comfortable mattress

grannybiker · 19/02/2018 20:57

No screens for an hour before bed.
Electric blanket on.
DC have always enjoyed gentle head stroking as they're being tucked in. Shame I have no-one to do it for me!

TimbuktuTimbuktu · 19/02/2018 20:59

A 30 minute radio 4 comedy programme and the timer set to turn it off before the end credits.

sealight123 · 19/02/2018 21:02

I have struggled to get to sleep many a time. However, what always works when I'm really struggling is a hot bath (or shower) with my Lush Twilight body wash, some warm milk and honey and my lavender heatpad. I have also invested in black out blinds and have adopted a no tech an hour before bed approach to try and get to sleep when I want to :)

hanarees · 19/02/2018 21:30

No looking at screens for an hour before bed - or if you have to turn down the brightness to help your eyes adjust.

towser44 · 19/02/2018 21:30

A nice malted milk drink before bed :-)

abby12321 · 19/02/2018 21:32

I’m usually so exhausted that I go to sleep quickly 😳 but I work shifts/night shifts plus have a 2 and 4 year old.
If I struggle - headspace (mindfulness app) works, night nurse of take if early otherwise groggy in morning.
Blackout blinds help!

ladymadonna1 · 19/02/2018 21:43

Lavender oil, warm bath, and milk and honey all help me to get a good night's sleep. I also think it's important not to watch TV just before bed, as this overstimulates the brain.

mave · 19/02/2018 21:50

No caffeine after 5, dark cool room, a good book with no screens at least an hour before bed!

LeeR1985 · 19/02/2018 21:50

I tend to avoid sugar or caffeine a couple of hours before bed and have a cotton fresh plug in which makes the room smell great :)

Mummaofboys · 19/02/2018 21:59

The best way to guarantee a good nights sleep is to have a ice cold bath or shower before before getting all snuggled under the duvet to lower the body temperature. To stay asleep I need have a nice cool bedroom but with a lovely warm duvet crisp clean bedding and somebody else to have the children overnight!

BellaWella86 · 19/02/2018 22:02

I turn the heating off at least an hour before going to bed and never leave it on overnight. I love a cold bedroom & even have the window open whilst I drift off to sleep (partner closes it later).

pfcpompeysarah · 19/02/2018 22:12

Blackout curtains, fresh air, and a nice quiet environment all make for a great nights sleep. I have to say though, the biggest improvement in my sleep has been my Tempur mattress... OMG .. its so comfortable and literally hugs me to sleep.

Lisapaige24 · 19/02/2018 22:17

A dab of lavender oil on the temples and a cup hot milk sends me right off
