A good night's sleep is something many of us long to have, and would go to great lengths to get. That’s why Dreams would like to know your top tips and successful methods for getting a great night’s sleep, whether that’s perfecting the temperature in your bedroom or a never fail tactic to keep children in their rooms.

Here’s what Dreams has to say: “At Dreams, we understand the importance of a great night’s sleep and we know this can seem like an impossible challenge for new parents or parents to be. That’s why we’re delighted to be working with Mumsnet and its community of parents to help you get the sleep you deserve.”

Do you have a routine that helps you to relax before bed so that you drift off easily - a relaxing bath or a no-phones period? Perhaps you have arranged your bedding so that it’s comfortable for both you and your partner? Maybe ear plugs have revolutionised your sleep or you meditate before bed to stop you overthinking and worrying about things? Do you avoid certain things like coffee or eating late at night or maybe you have a particular hot drink or music to listen to that works a treat?

Whatever you do to help you improve your quality of sleep please share it below. Everyone who leaves a comment will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

Try and go to sleep at the same time every night and stay off ipads for an hour before bed.

helcrai · 12/02/2018 16:24

I swear by lavender- a small posy in a bag or a few drops in a diffuser bottle sprayed on my pillow before bed. I find it helps to read for a little while to relax before I drop off.

Angelfaced · 12/02/2018 17:06

I have a silent night superking size bed I bought from dreams, It's amazing!! I love the extra space. I sprinkle a bit of lavender oil on my pillow for a good night's sleep.

CointreauVersial · 12/02/2018 17:12

Two things really help me drift off - a cup of herbal tea before bedtime, and my microwave hottie!

theHitcher · 12/02/2018 17:27

Ice cold room and a regular bedtime.

biffyboom · 12/02/2018 17:36

My top tip would be to have the children in the bed with me and send partner into one of the spare rooms!
Now that's not actually what happens, but when he's away on business it's what I do, and I sleep much better, and the children sleep longer too Grin

Blackout curtains make a huge difference to is. We didn’t have them until dd came
Along but I wouldn’t be without them now.

For dd a baby sleeping bag means that she is not waking in the night because she is cold. A better nights sleep for all of us.

I have a pillow with a speaker in it that I can plug in to listen to my favourite soothing sleep-inducing podcasts and radio programmes. I have always found it easier to sleep when my brain is focussed on something other than raking over the details of the day and pointing out what I did wrong?

1969angep · 12/02/2018 18:13

I need the room to be cool and prefer a light duvet (though at the moment we have a 9 tog as my fiancé would otherwise be too cold!) a warm bath and a couple of chapters of a good book usually do the trick (and switching off the tech at least an hour before!)

therealposieparker · 12/02/2018 18:18

I often listen to a lecture on Youtube, ask me anything about cosmology to astrophysics and if it's from the first 15 minutes of a lecture I'm your woman!!

Summerdays2014 · 12/02/2018 18:31

Warm bath, no coffee, only one pillow.

Theimpossiblegirl · 12/02/2018 18:37

Living in a rural area with poor signal and slow wifi helps me sleep, I couldn't use my phone in bed even if I wanted to, so upstairs is a gadget free zone.

MakeTeaNotWar · 12/02/2018 18:56

Dh’s various noises - snoring, snuffling, loud mouth breathing & sleep talk disturb me no end so it’s best I slope off to the spare bedroom once he’s sound asleep and I’m not

Sierra259 · 12/02/2018 19:07

I prefer a very dark room. I am quite picky about my pillows and have one firm one and one medium one. The most important thing for me though is no noise! I can't stamd hearing the noise of the TV from downstairs or noise from outside.

decadance · 12/02/2018 19:19

I put my electric blanket on an hour before bed, then a warm bath. put on lots of sleepy cream from the Body Shop, and I wear a cotton nightie, the sleepy cream really does work, for me anyway, and have to have only one pillow, and love freshly washed cotton bedding.

DecemberCat · 12/02/2018 19:27

No caffeine after 4pm and a cool temperature in the bedroom. I use earplugs much of the time as my partner snores.

ClaireFraser · 12/02/2018 19:36

Cool bedroom, can't sleep with the window closed even if it's into minus figures!

Lovely fluffy feather duvet as it moulds to your shape better to keep you warm. Wool blanket on top of extra cold - natural fibres breathe better than synthetics.

And I do a relaxation technique every night which sends me off to sleep on minutes.

Wriggle toes, relax them, ankles, relax them - I basically work my way up my body slowly tensing the muscles, envisaging the muscles relaxing.

It is the most boring thing ever and without fail I am usually asleep by the time I got to relaxing my bum muscles 😂 the only time I have had to do it twice before I fell asleep was the nighty before I got married because I was so excited!

EggysMom · 12/02/2018 20:05

Cold bedroom, ceiling fan going (air movement helps keep my nasal passages clear), blackout linings to the curtains.

I know they say no screens in the bedroom, but I fall asleep fastest to the drone of QI / WILTY / MTW / Dave Gorman on the Dave channel. I don't watch it, just listen. Invariably I am asleep within 10-15 minutes of going to bed!

TellMeItsNotTrue · 12/02/2018 21:04

A firm mattress and a cool room, I struggle when it's too warm

NotEnoughCushions · 12/02/2018 21:12

I like a warm room and a cosy bed but with the window open a little for some fresh air.

My sleep improved massively when we bought a new mattress, duvet and pillows - I didn't realise just how lumpy the old mattress was. A mattress topper also made a big difference. Finally, taking the TV out of the bedroom meant that we stopped dozing off with a film on and then waking up again in the middle of the night.

Elle8989 · 12/02/2018 21:13

I find sex helps and then a shower and I put my comfy pjs on. They are a thin material so not too hot. Then I have my duvet and another duvet on top. So I can choose to take one off i I get too hot. I always have water by my bed and refuse to look at my phone until my alarm goes off, never looking what time it is. The heating is off. The room is very dark. I wear rocket earplugs and fluffy socks.

HermanCakeDestroyer · 12/02/2018 21:49

For me a warm shower, followed by a dark room and my cool mist diffuser with a few drops of bergamot and rosemary makes for a good night’s sleep.

ifigoup · 12/02/2018 22:02

Clean sheets. No caffeine. As wide and firm a bed as possible. Dark, quiet; fresh air coming through. A hot water bottle or electric blanket if it's chilly. A good book. A podcast or radio drama to drift off to.

queenoftheschoolrun · 12/02/2018 22:06

Hot bath with Epsom salts followed by reading a book in bed. Never fails to get me to sleep. Haven't worked out how to get back to sleep once woken in the early hours though...

AimlesslyPurposeful · 12/02/2018 22:41

I just can’t sleep if I’m cold. I always give the bed a quick blast with the hairdryer before getting in it at night. And I know it’s obvious but having a comfortable mattress really helps. I spent a couple of nights in the spare room recently as I painted my bedroom and I hardly slept! The springs could be felt through the mattress and they made a noise with every little movement. Getting into a comfortable bed is one of those affordable little luxuries.
