To get you in the mood, here's some tips on decorating your tree:

So whether you’re a tinsel and fairy light lover, prefer a real or a fake tree, or even fake snow!, please share how you are going to decorate your home this Christmas below. Everyone who posts on the thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Probably an artificial tree this year - I really like the Snowy 6ft tree on the Homebase site for something a little different, and it's a good price too. I tend to stick to fairly traditional decorations, not too much tinsel and bling but lots of twinkling fairy lights both indoors and out - particularly like the warm white icicle lights which are subtle but effective. Going to have a go at making my own bauble wreath for the front door too! I usually make one with holly, and other greenery but will try something different this year.

Last year was my first Christmas without my beloved mum and I really wasn't in the mood to celebrate. This year however, I intend to pull out all the stops, lots of decorations, festive cheer and a houseful for Christmas Day!

So this year will be me and my boyfriends first christmas in our new home. Which makes this year even more exciting! I have found the perfect spot under the stairs for our tree to sit. Since everything in our home in grey with a hint of colour Im going for a silver sparkly tree with loads of coloured decorations. Keeping some traditions with a reef on our door and a garland going up the stairs. Our cute little dog will also be joining in with his little santa outfit on. While me and partner sit under the tree in our matching jim jams.

This is actually going to be our first Christmas at home together as a couple - every year till now we've spent it away with family, but I'll be 33 weeks pregnant with our first baby on Christmas Day this year! So it'll be the first time we decorate our home too...and we both want to go traditional. We have some gorgeous Christmas-themed bunting that my MIL made, and some traditional garlands from my dad decorated with artificial pine cones, apples and greenery - tree will be decorated with traditional-style wooden decorations and we'll be avoiding the tinsel!

A "caga tio" - a Catalan pooping log.

sheilads105 · 20/11/2017 15:30

Our real Christmas tree is the focus. Full of decorations from when the kids were small (teething rings!) and ones bought on our holidays. Each one brings back memories.

We put up 2 fake trees in the lounge - both decorated with red tinsel and lights. We also get a Poinsettia plant so as to have something real. It transforms the lounge into a cheerful red room!

robinson131 · 20/11/2017 15:32

I have a fake tree decorated in traditional green red and gold,I also decorate my window with a snow scene.

maisiesnan · 20/11/2017 15:35

My tree is a very good artificial one which I've had for a number of years. Both my adult children have a colour themed tree and decorations but I have always had a multi coloured tree .There's one or two new decorations every year but most are years old but I love my decorations , lights, holly wreaths and tinsel. Most importantly is that my granddaughters love my tree .

We are not, going to Cyprus for christmas

ThemisA · 20/11/2017 15:39

Whilst I love a real tree - the scent and look are far superior, I cannot cope with killing a tree and watching it slowly die so I'm afraid we always have a fake tree. We have a lot of home made decorations from Fimo which genuinely look really sweet. I love soft, pastel, old fashioned fairy lights rather than the hard modern ones and there has to be chocolates on the tree and gingerbread.

The rest of the house is fairly understated - a few musical snow globes, candles and not much else.

I have got our cards down to a small number by agreeing not to exchange with a lot of people and this helps to keep the house more ordered.

I have great fun decorating at Christmas as Charlie Cat loves to follow me around untrimming as I trim as you can see from the picture. I've been shopping on Amazon & Ebay for new decorations & bought some lovely poinsettia garlands for my window sills & fireplace & luxury tinsel garlands to trim around my pictures & mirrors. I've also bought some really lovely window stickers for my lounge, study & kitchen & a couple of 2ft pre-decorated christmas trees, one for the lounge & one for the study. I can't have a large tree because of the cats, they'd just try to climb up it & pull it over so I have small ones on my furniture instead.

As I have amassed a huge box of decorations and tinsel, singing Santa's and dancing Christmas trees, I plan to go all out this year, with tinsel around every picture and doorway, fairy lights around the window, my moving fibre optic figures on the windowsill, and the 'Santa please stop here' sign in the garden.

Elizasmum02 · 20/11/2017 15:55

i admit going overboard with the decs, the windows are get decked with lights a real tree and plenty of tinsel

Less in more!

I pick a colour scheme and have a few tasteful decorations around the home as well as a tree (always fake) and a few fairy lights in the lounge.

Tinsel is a no go as it gets everywhere!

TracyKNixon · 20/11/2017 16:01

As we have pets, we have a fake but realistic looking tree which we decorate with flashing lights and red and gold baubles, We also have a lovely garland that covers our fireplace and another one that decorates our staircase. We have other hanging decorations, lights, candles and ornaments around our home too as well as Chrsitmas themes, bedding, cushions, throws, crockery etc - so it takes a good part of a weekend to decorate our home and that is just the inside.....

ErinSophia · 20/11/2017 16:02

My daughters have requested tartan decorations as they love them, myself and my husband love nutcracker decorations and real Christmas trees! We use mostly the same decorations every year and pick a few new pieces each Christmas.

angela121262 · 20/11/2017 16:02

As always plenty of lights and Christmas decorations

wjanice121 · 20/11/2017 16:06

I love christmas decoration and, over the years, amassed loads of indoor and outdoor decorations. I have a santa with a sleigh to go on the roof and flashing lights for the fascia boards

Darnley · 20/11/2017 16:11

We have 3 7ft fake trees. The hall tree is going to be gold this year with lots of twinkling warm white lights (from Homebase ).

Living room tree will be dark blue, gold and bronze, with more twinkling lights.

Dining room will be red, green and gold, more lights.

Both fireplaces will be decorated with garlands and candles.

rackhampearl · 20/11/2017 16:12

I’m going quite traditional this year. I saw a feature the other day about ‘Victorian’ Christmas’ so this year I’ll be making some cute dried orange slices to decorate the tree with, bundled with cinnamon sticks and jute material stockings with lots of rich Christmassy colours. We are putting the tree up tonight :) I normally wait until December but I’ve just found out my Dad may have throat cancer so DH suggested we whack em up now to cheer me up.

fake tree with new colour decorations this year, going for light blue

xcxcsophiexcxc · 20/11/2017 16:16

First Christmas in our own home and with my son and I have not yet bought any decorations ! Hoping to atleast get a tree though x

Catmadroo · 20/11/2017 16:18

I have an artificial tree that my son and I will decorate together as ours tradition, our tree decorations are red, gold and silver/white. I use to have lots of colourful decorations hanging from ceiling but I don't know if I will this year as my son is older now and he likes the ornaments more especially ones that move or have music.

meepmoop79 · 20/11/2017 16:22

The decorations do not go until the 20th. And then its two fake trees, and lots of lights. No real theme, other than more is more!
