It’s hard to believe that there was once a time when all our gadgets didn’t exist and people had to live without modern essentials such as a washing machine Shock! Co-op Electrical would like to find out which electrical item you couldn’t live without, whether it’s one that helps with everyday life or a luxury item.

Here’s what Co-op Electrical has to say: “Electrical items are now so much a part of our lives that it’s easy to take them for granted. But we know that when our customers need a new washing machine, cooker or fridge-freezer, they need it quickly, which is why we offer next day delivery to most parts of the UK. Even a few days without a ‘luxury’ item like a TV or tablet can feel tough!"

Would you be lost without your laptop? Or is your TV precious to you as it can keep the DC occupied and allow you to watch Strictly Glitterball? Would you fail to function without your coffee machine? Or maybe your fancy straighteners are a necessity to battle frizz?

Whatever electrical item you would feel lost without, please share it below. Everyone who posts on the thread will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

Washing machine. Hand washing my DH's skiddy pants? No thank you!!

Thistly · 13/11/2017 22:35

I think if we have got to the scenario where we only have one electrical appliance though, people are gonna care less and wear grubby clothes a bit more, so maybe I can do a bit less laundry. I will go for a cooker, because finding firewood and keep a fire going is a lot of work.

averythinline · 13/11/2017 22:37

for me - practical : dishwasher - I hate washing up with a passion....
could survive with daily shopping and laundrette (although would rather not!)
enjoyment - smartphone/charger - i love the freedom and access to the world you can get in the palm of your hand

joangray38 · 13/11/2017 22:42

My microwave - use it every day for most things - making hot drinks, cooking veg and fruit, making mug cakes/ bread. The list is endless

WonderLime · 13/11/2017 23:04

Putting aside my fridge freezer and washing machine, I would say my iPad. I'm on Mat leave at the moment and find that I can end up stuck on the bed or sofa for hours at a time so it's nice to have something to keep me busy at those times.

FusionChefGeoff · 13/11/2017 23:16

Hmmm, probably the freezer as most other things can be replicated somehow just with more effort. I regularly batch cook and there’s 2 whole drawers of individual meals from leftovers and each one represents a night I don’t have to cook!!!

Hoping to move soon into a house with a garage and I plan on getting another freezer just for Party food / Xmas stuff!

My first instinct is Hoover. Which is weird, as I bloody hate hoovering! But with kids, cats, muddy dog, messy DH, woodburner... it would be grim really quickly and the thought of how long it would take to clean without one is shocking.

Freezer - could live without, it's convenient but not essential. Ditto fridge I reckon - cold store room & buy daily.

Cooker - gas stove could run on bottles & matches. Would live without oven or get an Aga. Coffee is Aeropress so no bother there. Stovetop kettle.

Dishwasher I'd miss but the old-fashioned option of making the DC do it is totally legitimate!

Not massively appearance driven so hairdryer, straighteners etc no bother to live without.

TV - wouldn't miss too much, would read. Computers/iPhone etc - temporary extreme pain no doubt (and loss of my job!) but I'd get over it - and wouldn't have time to work anyway what with all the manual labour and domestic effort...

Washing machine - wear clothes more, spot clean more, wash less things in general (and make each person responsible for their own! Grin). No tumble dryer anyway.

Yup, still sticking with Hoover!

Gingernaut · 14/11/2017 06:25

Washing machine - Hands down the most important electrical item I own.

After that, the DAB radio.

MargoLovebutter · 14/11/2017 09:11

Not sure if mobile phones count, but it would have to be that as no 1 item I would be bereft without.

In terms of household goods, then it would have to be my fridge, closely followed by the washing machine. I know I'd survive as you'd just make more regular trips to the shops & use a launderette, but the faff would be enormous.

nemno · 14/11/2017 13:22

Essential are the fridge and the washing machine. Then the nearly-essential are dishwasher, oven, freezer and tumble drier. For my happiness I require a laptop and TV. All the other things like kettle, coffee machine, microwave and heated cushion ( Grin ) make my life better and I'd really rather keep them.

lolly2011 · 14/11/2017 14:28

It would have to be my fridge freezer, I store up to a months meals in there. It would then be my laptop as I absolutely love comping.

1wokeuplikethis · 14/11/2017 15:40

The kettle because I need my tea and coffee. Although I could boil water on the stove for that so...

My fridge freezer then; I take ice in my Bacardi and cokes Wink

1033MICHELLE · 14/11/2017 16:32

I would be lost without my kettle. I need coffee!!

SistersOfPercy · 14/11/2017 16:52

At the moment my pressure cooker. Don't know why I didn't buy one years ago!

Winningbeauty · 14/11/2017 17:15

Handsdown, since becoming a mother the electrical item that I could not live without is the tumble dryer!

I never would've thought this but anything that decreases the amount of clutter around my house and helps is for me a lifesaver.

Now to invent something that will unload the tumble dryer for me 😜

userinfinity · 14/11/2017 17:17

Electric blanket - I didn't even think I needed it until we got it! Essentials wise would be washing machine... or fridge/freezer... or .... cooker ... makes me realize how much we rely on our appliances

evensmilingmakesmyfacehurt · 14/11/2017 17:20

Since having my son it’s definitley a close call between the washing machine and the hoover.

I underestimated how many clothes he would go through 🤭 I also underestimated how much mess a small person can make

debjani · 14/11/2017 17:34

Washing machine - when my house/life is a mess, at least I have clean clothes to wear, clean towels after a shower and clean bedding to sleep in!

jacqui5366 · 14/11/2017 17:56

my television, it is my eye to the outside world, I watch it when up feeding at night, can use the catch up feature for the programmes I have missed, if I am shattered and we go to bed at 6, then it is great for keeping my DC entertained when I am making meals or doing the housework or simply when we are together singing along to Cbeebies. I feel I should have chosen something more 'useful' washing machine or cooker, but for me this is something which enhances my life. Simples.

VivienneWestwoodsKnickers · 14/11/2017 19:54

My SAD lamp. I get Seasonal Affective Disorder every autumn, which results in me uncontrollably sobbing at nothing and unable to get moving in the morning.

My lamp is literally life changing for me, and gets it all back under control in a few days. I couldn't imagine going through another winter of SAD - it's so debilitating and distressing.

monika098 · 14/11/2017 20:08

Washing machine!

Gammeldragz · 14/11/2017 20:32

Washing machine. I grew up watching my mum handwash all our clothes in a big bucket with water she had to carry from the farm across the road. No way could I do that!

SottoVoc3 · 14/11/2017 20:39

Washing machine??? Or phone???? I could maybe give up my phone if I could keep my iPad....but, then again, school expects you to be contactable at all times....
Definitely not my dishwasher.... I just use it to store my recycling.

hollowtree · 14/11/2017 21:12

My perfect prep machine!! Thank you Tommy tippee for saving me every night at 3am

GetKnitted · 14/11/2017 22:17

the freezer. I can wash clothes myself, we could cook on a fire if we had to, I could even make a cool box for fridge items if we had to, but there would be no replacing icecream if our freezer wasn't there
