Technology has not only become such a big part of our lives, but it’s also evolving at a rapid rate, meaning that we can often feel that our computers and laptops aren’t keeping up with the needs of our families. Whether you and your family need a laptop just to browse the web and keep in touch with friends or you have creative needs that need to be met, Intel would like to hear about what you’d look for when purchasing a new PC or laptop for your family.

Here’s what Intel have to say: “If your computer is more than a handful of years old, you’re missing more than you know! Today’s Modern PCs are more powerful, lighter and have a longer battery life. But with so many different options available how do you know which one to choose for your family? Whether your children are school aged or studying at college or university there is some great video advice on how to choose here.

A new thin and light laptop with an Intel® Pentium® processor is perfect for homework, watching video clips and streaming movies from a service like Netflix*. However, if your child is more creative and likes to edit video or create music then they will appreciate the extra performance from an Intel® Core™ processor.

Computers with the latest Intel® Core™ processor inside are more amazing than ever. They have the fast performance to switch between multiple applications simultaneously and stunning 4K Ultra HD visuals. The long battery life is perfect to keep children happy when travelling. Some now have screens that flip over to stand like a tent – which is great for watching movies. Plus, there are new ways to interact with your computer, including voice and touch control and Windows Hello allows uses facial recognition for hassle-free log-ins. With a range of smart, stylish designs and screen sizes, there’s an Intel®-powered laptop at Argos to fit any budget.”

Do you have a resident gamer who needs the software to be fast? Perhaps you look for a long battery life to ensure your children can watch a full movie without needing a charger? Or maybe your family has a creative flare, so you look for a laptop and/or PC with extra performance to edit video, create music and or just manage lots of photographs?

Whatever your family would be able to do with a new PC and/or laptop, share this on the thread below. All MNers who comment on the thread will be entered into a prize draw, where one lucky MNer will win a £300 Argos voucher.

Thanks and good luck!

It would be a definite plus for schoolwork!.. Whilst the resident gamer does need the software swift and up to date...to my mind the biggest benefit would be ease of the schoolwork! :)

jandoc · 10/09/2017 20:48

it would save some passing about of the current laptop

Mummy2aRockstar · 10/09/2017 20:50

A laptop would be used for many different things in our house, my 5 year old son would use it for his homework and reading eggs games, I'd use it for coursework and my fiancé would probably steal it to play games on.
My fiancé works shifts so when he's working late my son and I snuggle up in bed and watch Netflix on my phone but it would be so much better on a laptop.

vickyors · 10/09/2017 20:56

My other half has a laptop which is 10 years old. So we'd be looking for a laptop which is able to do his work on it. He's a vicar, and he uses it for every day stuff, but he also uploads videos and podcasts. He needs to edit films and it needs to be mobile, as he often. So it would need battery life to go to pastoral visits and do long FaceTime with family of our folk from church far away. So battery life and editing...

After struggling with my Year 8 sons maths homework tonight where I was clueless and resorted to googling on my tiny iPhone screen a new laptop would be worth its weight in gold!

giddyypixie · 10/09/2017 21:22

My OH plays games online so he needs his PC to be super fast with really realistic graphics. He recently built his own PC from scratch with all the custom graphics cards etc to give him the best gaming experience. My laptop is more a general, everything laptop - Youtube, social media and just day to day online bits and bobs! Need less to say mine cost a fraction of the OH's!

del2929 · 10/09/2017 21:38

we would upload all our pics and get round to making DVDS of all the clips we have of the darling children

phillie1 · 10/09/2017 21:43

New laptop for daughter starting Uni rather than the very slow, very old one she has would come in very handy

Whyisitsodifficult · 10/09/2017 21:57

We have one laptop which is about 12 years old which is probably considered 'vintage' these days! It's incredibly slow not quite dial up but painful. We have no clue about buying a new one and it all seems very daunting trying to fathom it all out. My husband tries to run his business using it and our three DC's try doing there stuff on it. If it was a dog I think it would be put to sleep in a kind way!

PickAChew · 10/09/2017 22:04

DS1 has just got a new laptop, paid for with a combination of a refund on a malfunctioning one and left over Christmas and birthday money.

He's spent a lot of day using it to draw stuff! He quite likes image editing and creating Powerpoint presentations.

buckley1983 · 10/09/2017 22:28

Our family laptop is bravely soldiering on.. but is on it's last legs & is painfully slow! It also looks very chunky compared to more modern laptops. I don't like to talk ill of it though, it has served us well over the years!!
My son has just started school so we'd use a new laptop to help him continue his ICT learning at home, hopefully with the same speed & efficiency as the school models!

kateandme · 11/09/2017 09:24

dc is a wonderful artist.so has lots of saved inspiration photos art pieces etc.so accessing these quickly and downlading her images to save them would be fab.and save lots of money too because she could access them and not have to go through printouts or worry about having to find a library when her arty flare strikes up she could just be at home and do it and I think her talent could grow so much from that.

bubbleybooboo · 11/09/2017 10:00

Our PC is used for everything we do. Its a gaming station for my son, its there for the childrens homework as they do it all online and save it then forward it to their teachers for marking. I use it for banking, for socialising, shopping, grocery shopping and emailing. I also use it to catch up on soaps as the tv is sometimes took over by the boys of the house on the xbox. Its quite old and id love a revamp!

emmav6 · 11/09/2017 10:06

we are definitely in need for an upgrade! The boys need one for their homework, hubby uses it for emails and catch up tv and i do love a bit of online shopping whilst i've got music on :)

katkatgu · 11/09/2017 10:09

Our current laptop could do with an upgrade - we use it for everything!

VickyRsuperstar · 11/09/2017 10:34

A new laptop would be great as the kids often need a computer for homework. My 14 year old daughter had a really old one but it finally expired over the holidays so having access to a new one would really help her as she starts her GCSE courses this year. Unfortunately like many parents I don't have any cash left after the Summer holidays to buy a new one or even a second hand one.

mamof3boys · 11/09/2017 10:55

I use my laptop every day, but my youngest son wants one of his own as he wants to be like his older brothers and his ambition is to become a famous YouTuber Grin

sharond101 · 11/09/2017 11:03

My Son has just started school and there are lots of learning apps I'd love him to have access to recommended by his school.

meepmoop79 · 11/09/2017 11:04

The laptop tends to be used for a bit of everything. From watching videos, playing games, homework apps, printing, photo arranging and surfing.
The current laptop is old and slow (based on todays specs) but its main disadvantage is that the battery will no longer hold a charge.
If disconnected from the power, the laptop will crash.
As such its now no longer a laptop, more a static desktop!

jacqui5366 · 11/09/2017 11:58

I would look for a laptop with a fast processor, ample memory, and a decent size screen. We would share the laptop for research for homework for my DC, being able to print homework off, so having some sort of word processing package would be great, I love to keep up with my friends on Facebook , so I would use it for that, and my OH being the geek he is loves to watch YouTube on model railway set ups by some bloggers. I have also began scanning old school reports, school photos, and school newsletters which my DC has appeared and and filing them in month within year order (yes my inner geek is showing too). That way I wont loose this precious memories. My next purchase is to be some external storage for my files.

angiehoggett · 11/09/2017 12:58

For personal use I look for a laptop with long battery life for travelling, a large memory to handle multiple things at once and a fast processor for speed.

Pipstarz41 · 11/09/2017 13:28

I would look for a fast laptop that has large amounts of memory. I need somewhere to edit photos and I take a lot of photos! And external hard drives are cumbersome.

Hiro1982 · 11/09/2017 13:56

I'd use it for everyday use.

farhanac · 11/09/2017 14:33

Would be a great tool to support home schooling

JoGodfray · 11/09/2017 14:55

5 Kids all fighting for the same laptop - absolute nightmare. I rarely get to go on it. My eldest is going into year 8 and had decided the only way forward is to ask Santa for one for Christmas!!
